BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Hello, the Preferences.dat file is something that only exists if you export it first. So if you didn't export it, it won't be there. But if you kept your old windows installation, did SU open with all its shortcuts in place? If you didn't delete the SU 8 registry, it might have been able to keep its shortcut keys.

SketchUp 2013 requires a license file no matter whether you have the Pro version (license file contains Pro license key) or the free "Make" version (contains agreement for non-commercial use). While SketchUp 8 tried to make the executables more different to prevent licensing problems, they reverted that and made the executables almost identical, introducing a lot of new problems under certain circumstances (Make turns itself into expired Pro, refuses to run more than 1 instance, or refuses to run as "portable" app). I assume the above problem was due to user/admin priviledges (in an ideal world, programs would absolutely never request you to run as admin). Strangely the license file is sometimes located at different places, like Users/Public/AppData/SketchUp/SketchUp 2013/SketchUp13.lf which is writeable with simple user privileges. Maybe SketchUp will also find it when you move it there?

Thanks for the replies. I worked out what the issue was in the end. The camera was coming through in the right position and focal length. However, when I changed the size of the render window to match the photograph the focal length of the camera changed. So after fixing the size of the render I went back and changed the focal length back to the original value and it worked perfectly. Thanks again for your replies. Andy

Kristoff's question is good. Did you just recently update the graphics drivers? It isn't unheard of that an update to the graphics drivers causes problems. What have you changed on the computer recently? Did you install any new plugins? If SketchUp 8 has been working fine for years it isn't likely to be a problem with the program but rather something else causing the problem.

It's probably using a sledgehammer to crack a nut but check out Kirill's LSS Toolbar, first image shows face to face via a path which should work: https://googledrive.com/host/0Bwmt-Rax8alUNkFEMjZkOWhfRFU/index.html, also http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=47399&p=426612&hilit=kirill#p426612 and it would appear to be version 8 I won't be upgrading any time soon either; the tide of rage from the early adopters makes me wary.

[image: 1wg2_columns.png] Yes, you could. I made the short column from XAYA's tall one at the left. Height was adjusted with the Move tool while the capital and the top of the fluted column size was done with the Scale tool. Only a few minutes to do. TBH, the column could use a little fixing up. The column itself isn't centered on the base and the capital isn't centered on the column. I'd make the parts components, too. Especially if you'll have more than one. I'd do it even if there is only one.

Thanks jiminy I've tried that and there's a couple of problems there: As I jump between scenes, the matched photo appears before the model rotates to the right position and obscures the model to the viewer so it's hard to Understand what is going on (is there a way for the matched photo to appear later?) When I try to export to, say, pdf 3d, I can't find away to export it without losing the matched photo. Will appreciate any ideas

@krisidious said: @hellnbak said: Could somebody please explain what this is about? Yeah, I are pretty SU dumb He was part of the Trimble team and he was a big supporter of the SketchUp Acquisition and perhaps a facilitator of it... He passed away last year I believe. This is their Trimble Tribute. Ah. Thanks for explaining that. I did find this thread that talks about Derrick http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=52492&p=475932&hilit=derrick#p475932 So now I know. Sad that he's passed away.

The discount update is from 2009 to 2013,2014 &2015 for about 1500 euros for two licenses. That's a rather good deal. You get all the updates up to 2015 in a socalled VSS. Vectorworks Service Select. I am sure that VW will not really be a crashing monster. It could be some updates are but that should be taken care off rather quick. I know VW very well and I love it. Its just that in 3D it all looks very old fashioned compared to what we do in SU, Modo and Maxwell. Also compared to Rhino. VW looks to me old school 3D modeling. You know the kind engineers are able to bear with but designers dread. Tx Unearthed for the links. I gave them a look. I will start a thread at Nemetchek to see what the VW community would like to share. Anyhow, anyone with real hands on experience here using SU as well as a recent version of VW. Would love to hear from you. Francois

Scan2Cad, http://www.scan2cad.com/ has been around for a long time, but its current release Release 8.3 is not cheap. It might suit some peoples needs though, & there is a free trial. It recognises and can edit text in images and supports batch processing. Its probably one of the best available bits of software for complex raster conversions out there. It's a few years (10 maybe) since I used it but I remember it as a highly competent program. As far as I remember AutoCAD Map had raster to vector functions built in, so our office switched to that on cost grounds.

So far, RoundCorner seems the be the biggest crasher for me with VR 1.6. I just work with it disabled until they find the bug that's causing it. They are working on it feverishly.

I'm not sure what you mean by the position is altered but it sounds like you've got it now. Just in case, here's an anaolgy. When you make a component it's kind of like wrapping the selection in clear cling wrap. Think of a sandwich wrapped in cellophane. If you want to make a change to the sandwich you have to open the wrapper. In the same way, if you want to edit a component, you have to open its wrapper first. Now, if you have two individually wrapped sandwich components and wrap them in another piece of cling wrap, you have a nested component like the Shapes component in my example. If you want to wrap a pickle (the cylinder) up with the sandwiches, you have to take the pickle from where it is and place it inside the wrapper. In SketchUp Edit>Cut and Edit>Paste in place do that. So does grabbing the pickle and dragging it over the sandwiches in Outliner. Outliner is opening the wrapper automatically when you hover over it's name and it highlights. And of course because the wrapper containing the two sandwiches is a component all other copies of it get the pickle, too. All of this can be confusing until you have a really good picture of what's happening. Then you'll find it is all incredibly powerful.

sometimes a pdf doesn't contain real vector lines but an image of vector lines instead. Maybe that's why the conversion generates 2 files and you get the error. If that's the case you can try some image2xdf programs or trace them by hand.

Kentucky, I export to dwg regularly. The difference is that I am looking for a 3D model in Autocad (I export to 3D). If your parts are groups, solid groups or components, they will come into Autocad as blocks. Unfortunately, each piece will be its own block. Not really what you want. I'm not sure that what you want to do is achievable. Kris

You could always import it as a background watermark and try to manually match a camera view to it. Not sure if the perspective would work for match photo scene.

Was this the link that you are thinking of? http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=49686 I have the original prototype flying and I am now finishing up the second prototype with changes. Here are some photos of some of my buddies test flying the prototype in Cincinnati, Ohio.
