    • RE: SketchUp 2013 ;)

I am ok with not a lot of new features as long as there were some under the hood improvements (toolbards, api?)

But what is really bothering me are the icons... why change them?
They were intuitive and clean. The new ones look poorly made... Kind of pixelated...?
It feels like I am using a 1998 version of Sketchup.
Even the face-style buttons in the style panel... I can't believe someone there spent time making it worse.

But with that said, I do like the new SU branding... I have come to really like the new logo.

    • RE: Consistent Crashing - Caused by plugin?

I moved everything back to the model and restored all my plugins except VRAY beta - the crashing stopped.
      Thanks for the suggestions.
      Case closed 😍

If you download the latest version of V-Ray Tools from EW it will support the 1.6 beta.

Tks! I will try that next time I need to use vray again

      Thanks TT.
I will install the Plugin Store again to just to be 100% sure it's Vray.

And about V-Ray Tools, that's how I usually launch vray πŸ˜‰ , but yesterday I installed the latest vray beta 1.6.

    • Consistent Crashing - Caused by plugin?

I have been working on a file for a few days and sometime yesterday it started crashing.
(Running 8.0.16846 on Windows 7 x64 - ususally pretty stable).

As I worked, it would consistently crash (w/ bugsplat) every 5-10 minutes (it would rarely make it to the 10 min autosave mark).

Bugsplats could happen with any operation - from closing a group, to scaling or moving a group.

This is what I have already tried:
-Clean, fix errors, and purge model.
      -Copy paste into new file.
-Cut paste work done in the last few hours into a separate file (in case something there was corrupt and causing the problem).

None of these things helped, which caused me to think it could be caused by one of the two plugins I installed yesterday: Vray 1.6 beta, and the update for the Plugin Store.

I removed these two plugins by restoring my plugin folder from a backup, and I have now been working for about about 45min with no crashes.

I guess my next step is to install the two plugins one at a time, and see which one is causing the problem.

Have you guys had problems with any of the two mentioned plugins?

      @thomthom said:

You can also use the .3ds format. But the textures must lie in the same folder as the .3ds file.

      I think I love you.... 😍
I have been trying to find ways of bringing OnyxTrees with UV into SU, and this is by far the easiest way! It only took me 3 hours on google to find this post!

(Sorry for reviving this old as* topic) πŸ˜’

Using Sketchup (+ photoreal rendering) to visualize the project while the changes are done in Revit does not work.

I have say to do this quite often, and although it is not an easy process, I have found an effective workflow:

1> Model site and everything that will not change in SU (call this site.skp)
2> Export Revit model to a DWG (choosing "polymesh" instead of ACIS solids significantly reduced polycount... maybe is the other way around... ❓ )
3> Create a new SU file and import this DWG (let's call is bldg.skp) - I always use Thomthom's CleanUp tools to merge faces and clean up edges! It's a true miracle! (Tks TT!) πŸ˜† πŸ˜›
      4> Place bldg.skp as a component inside site.skp.
5> When the revit model is updated, just open building.skp, delete all re import the new DWG.
6> Open site.skp and reload the bldg.skp component.

To help with the rendering materials, I use Convert layers to materials plugin (this paints the geometry based on DWG's layers (walls, glazing, mullions, etc)
and then associate this material names with my Maxwell's rendering materials. (when the model is re imported, the links remain and it is ready to re-render).
(assuming that different materials are not on the same layers, which is usually not the case).

I guess need to notice this only works well when people doing the revit modeling keep the modeling relatively clean, and extremely under or over detailed. - Thankfully, that is my case! 😍

    • RE: Shaderlight vs Maxwell

Haven't used shaderlight, but I use maxwell a lot and I love it...
(I guess that makes me biased too.... πŸ˜† )
Renders do take a long time, but then again you also save time with an easy and intuitive scene setup (imho)....

    • RE: Maxwell Render For Google SketchUp Competition

Good thing they are sending the iPad from an US retailer...!

I remember something about licenses and cameras as well...

I don't think my rendering was really at the same level as some of the other images, but I think it caught their attention because it is different...
(I did that image as part of my architectural thesis project. You can see some more images of it here: http://issuu.com/guitalarico/docs/urban_data_center)
