For a long time I've been looking for a means to get my sketchup models into 2d cad while having the components become blocks. Haven't had any luck. I figured I would ask in case I have missed something. It would be great to get some tips if anyone else is accomplishing this.

I design water and waste water treatment plants and use sketchup in the preliminary stages for design of the piping, building and equipment layout. Our drafter refuses to use the 2d cad exports from sketchup because the pipe fittings aren't blocks, which makes changes in CAD difficult.

SU saves me weeks in design time, but in the end I am unable to get the full potential of the 3d model because I am unable to get it into CAD in a useful format that we can use to generate construction plans. I end up printing dimensioned drawings from SU as a reference so that our drafter can redraw them.
      Thanks

You do have the full version with CAD export, or SKUP v7 with the DWG export add on? From their you can export an ISO top or side view in 2d DWG format for importing as a block into your CAD package.

        Regards,

I am capable of exporting to dwg or dxf.
I am trying to get my model into CAD as you describe ISO TOP, side, etc., and have the components in my model become CAD blocks, not the model as a whole as a block. I need all of the piece components to be CAD blocks. Currently I only get lines.
If I have a complex pipe gallery with a number of fittings and export to 2D cad it would be useful to have those fittings come into cad as blocks vs just a bunch of lines.
I am looking for a possible workflow, to accomplish this.
          Thanks

            Kentucky,

I export to dwg regularly. The difference is that I am looking for a 3D model in Autocad (I export to 3D). If your parts are groups, solid groups or components, they will come into Autocad as blocks. Unfortunately, each piece will be its own block. Not really what you want. I'm not sure that what you want to do is achievable.
