BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

A quick look tells me your issue may be related to your incorrect use of layers. Worth reading up on them too.

I have one master model w/ ~150,000 faces that I broke up into 8 or 9 sub-assemblies. To ensure a correct placement in the final product I would pick a location in the master model and draw a triangle from there to where I would create an origin point in each future sub-assembly. That gave me an exact number of meters for an XY offset. Of course that triangle would be sent off to the sub-assembly too just in case I needed to importing everything back into a master model for inspection. When I was sure I was done I'd make a copy, remove my offset triangle, and export from there. When I just needed to clear out space and work on everything separately (but always intended to produce just a single model), I'd do the reload component trick mentioned above.

@pmolson said: Question 1. Do you actually use a 4k yourself? nope and surely won't because to much strain to the eyes, but click on "etc." above for further info concerning this issue. @pmolson said: Question 2. Wondering if i run two displays... wouldn't recommend multi-monitor setups because regularly difficult with OpenGL-based 3D applications and also may mix up toolbar positions etc. because of negative screen coordinates if e.g. monitor #2 is placed left from the main monitor #1. @pmolson said: Question 3. Any Idea when sketchup will support 4k displays? nope but obviously not before SU v2018 not avail before roughly end of this year... if included. in short, don't try this @ home

Paul, that looks great. One of the challenges I have had/have is in rendering metals. I agree that if you are rendering a product the context is indeed important. I still feel I have a lot to learn. One of the thinks I struggle with is the vocabulary and most of the tutorials I try to read assume you have full comprehension of it.

If Animator would work with LightUp you would be able to select it.

You must check Slender plugin. @unknownuser said: Description: Exports SketchUp model do Collada file, in command-line mode imports into Blender scene, bakes textures, exports Collada file from and finally imports to SketchUp

Different triangulation plugins can work, but you still get problems. You should consider manually creating 'guides' in your models to provide triangulation 'hints' for your model. Take this part of the alamo model I'm doing. You can see how the lines in the faces help with the triangulation. [image: Trian.jpg] You can of course use the eraser tool and ctrl-click (PC, not sure Mac) to 'hide' the lines and they will still work as shown: [image: Trian2.jpg] FWIW, the fastest triangulation plugin I've found is the SketchUV plugin triangulator.

[image: nVNk_Ztest1.jpg][image: faeB_Ztest2.jpg]Hi Numberosis, I think I know the issue. I found I offset the image by 1mm does work, of course, but the graffiti image did not show up in SU therefore I assumed it would not show up in the render if it did not show up in SU. I have attached images showing firstly the view in SU and the result of that same view in the render.

Those many lines are the way sketchup has to convert CAD splines into sketchup curves with high accuracy. You probably don't need that much accuracty for terrain contours.

@dave r said: I think the trays are a great idea and wouldn't want to go back to the old way. I was setting up SketchUp for years with the utility windows stacked on the right outside of the drawing window so the tray thing mimics my old setup with the added benefit of a little more toolbar space across the top. I found it incredibly annoying to have the windows covering the modeling space. Keeping them outside the modeling space eliminates that. +1 I don't know if you guys are using make or pro, but every new version of Sketchup, even if it doesn't bring a whole new set of features, represented a significant improvement for me, mainly because of Layout, but still an improvement that I can appreciate.

thanks to Eneroth, i learned that the axis origin of a group can be moved to wherever you need it by right-clicking one of the axis lines in the edit mode and choosing ''place''. you then close, re-open and scale. but to be clear, i am talking about re-sizing - not scaling. although re-sizing can also be construed as re-scaling. clear as mud?

I'm one of those people that try to push sketchup beyond what is meant to, but what I found when doing that, is Sketchup is able to stretch and I gain productivity. I ditched away CAD in exchange for SU and there is more people doing that each year. I believe that Sketchup will adjust in time and be even more competent for that. Revit is what it is, it's much more than Sketchup for certain architectural businesses, but Sketchup is fit for 90% of the other scenarios. What I like about Sketchup is that it isn't as streamlined as Revit and so allows for a multidisciplinar approach and a very flexible workflow that I couldn't find with Revit. I have quit using Revit long ago and adopted Sketchup instead. I didn't fully use Revit, but it seemed to me a standard architectural software that somehow forced us to work in a standard way. I don't know how Revit evolved since then but Sketchup, even limited as an Architectural software, allows for creative freedom. The downside is that it forces us to find convoluted methods to get standard output done. Even so, I rather keep using Sketchup as I cherish that design freedom. I find advantage on that freedom even in the latest stages of design and construction documentation. It's probably because of that that I also don't use your plugins Meedek. I admire your work but cannot think in standards nor work always on similar contexts. Your plugins represent standards so I have no great use for them, hence I thought Revit was fit for them. However, as you see with Plusspec, Sketchup is useful for people that deal with standards too. The problem with plusspec might be about Layout then, as it isn't yet as capable as Revit for documentation standard output.

Might be worth trying to update/reinstall your graphics driver as TIG hinted? I experience the same symptoms if i revert to my iGPU [intel hd4000 on a i7 3770k] AND Win10 has done an update. As a short term solution using the intel driver assistant to manually reinstall the Intel driver has always got things working again for me and is easier than uninstalling the microsoft update. I'm not too concerned as i only use the iGPU occasionally when I want to continue working and my discrete GPUs are rendering. If the above is relevant, and you have a desktop, then a discrete GPU might be worth considering?
