BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Thanks for pointing this out. This appears to be a feature that has crept up on us. All versions up to and including V7 had a two part attribute...you could 'Locate' a model anywhere you liked (all FF stuff was located to San Luis Obispo CA) If you export a kmz from any of these, that model will indeed be located in someone's driveway near an intersection in downtown SLO. However importing such a model into SU did not (and does not) result in the behaviour you noted. However there is also a georeferencing check box (up to V7); if this is also checked then you get the behaviour you noted. This appears to be the case in the model mentioned. We'll make sure this doesn't occur again and try to track down any errant files in which this is the case. V8 has no such two part attributes...either a model is geolocated, or not. The weird thing is that all the legacy FF models that are located but not georeferenced (all but a tiny handful, I'd imagine) show up in V8 as not being geolocated at all...yet they still spit out a kmz that places them in SLO.

It's not a funny way really - it's brilliant, and it does so for a very good reason If you have fought with other 3D programs where the textures scale themselves when you move a line or do some other modifications, which is what happens with normal UV mapped faces, you ought to love the way SU does it. The textures keep the same physical size whatever you do to the model (except scale the group/component, in which case the texture is scaled with the rest of the group), unless you tell it to scale, rotate, shear etc by using the Texture tools. This is one of the features that makes SU so great for architectural models etc.

@dave r said: that's a nice line style. What is it? hey Dave, notice in his style that some of the shorter edges forming the curve don't show up.. i'll often try to apply styles to some of my drawings which are heavily curved etc and many of the lines won't show up.. in fact, so many of the edges won't show up that i can't use the style even though i really like the look of it. is this something i can fix myself via a setting -or- is it something to do with the style itself? thanks.

As an archViz, I use Sketchup all the time, and I Have created a very personal workflow. Let's just say I wouldn't be so quick in modeling without a number of plugins. The plugins I use the most are: Extrusion Tools Tools on surface Opener (also referred to as HOLE) Lattice-izer Instances (so I can select all the instances of a component in 2 clicks) round corner joint push pull fredo scale mirror selection Rot90 I also make vast use of the sandbox tools, and I have a personal set of keyboard shortcuts. Section cuts I use a lot too. To make roofs with tiles and everything you could use: IstantRoof http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/2010/11/instant-roof-instant-productivity.html wich comes in two versions: free and pro. Hope this helps

you may try if disabling the Windows desktop composition does have any effect: "Right Click on SU > Properties > Compatibility tab > Settings > Disable desktop composition" [image: 259d1225821393-compatibility-mode-settings.jpg] hth, Norbert

Section-Planes inside groups only cut the groups' geometry - so group some parts. each with an active section-plane and then you'll get complex section-cuts. Alternatively make a copy of the SKP and actually cut a portion of it away - see Zooro2 and SectionCutFace for more details of this - there are several threads discussing this type of complex section-cuts...........

I also have everything since v.6. I even have the installer of v.5 (free) but that version was such a crippleware that I did not want to reinstall on this new computer.

I scanned the thread briefly, so apologies if it's already been suggested...but wouldn't the easiest way simply be to construct a perfectly normal room then apply FFD 2x2? Why work out all the trigonometry when SU can do it for you? Ames.skp

As the boat lies on the water you will have a problem with the parts that are under water. Unless you can view the hull from inside too? Or if you have some accurate specifications? Waterline may not necessarily be where the water is .. Being a barge it may probably be rather flat-bottomed?

Yeah, that option is on Mac too but occasionally, the SU entity info will get this little glitch in it and some of the info is seeming stuck to the edge. Expanding the dialog box doesn't help.

Great idea... Photoshop can be used extremely well in this situation. If he wants to do different angles, that is a whole other story. I modeled a whole pirate ship in Sketchup and rendered it in Kerkythea, but needed many different angles of the ship. So I used photoshop for the sky and water, but still had to render all the angles/lighting for each shot. Pirate Ship1 Pirate Ship2

thanks, I will keep that in mind and bookmark this page. I'm not yet ready to do what I thought needed to be done, as a design issue cropped up yesterday and needs to be solved first. I may be "forced" to get back into SketchyPhysics as a result, something I shoulda done long ago.
