BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

We may be getting closer - the only .skm files I can see are for textures I added. I have discovered that files that begin with a "." are invisible on Mac OS X. I have to go to the Apple store and talk to the guys at the Genius Bar. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks for helping with this, Alan

Hi Sam, hi folks. @ak-sam said: Great tip Jean! I'd like to be able to delete anything that isn't visible in a scene. If by delete you really want to remove the hidden geometry from the model, try this: 1 - Select all. All the non hidden objects get selected. 2 - Unhide all and also show all hidden layers. All hidden objects appear but are not selected. 3 - Press and hold the SHIFT key to Add/Subtract from the selection. 4 - While still pressing the SHIFT key, do a window select to englobe all the model, including already selected objects. These get unselected while all the rest gets selected. 5 - Delete the selection. BTW, to show all layers you do not have to click on the visibility check box for each one. There is a trick that seems undocumented. You click on the first layer, then press the SHIFT key and, while pressing it, click on the last layer. All of them will be selected. Then, click on the visibility check box of any hidden layer and it will be shown as well as all others. Just ideas.

I was wondering when they'd starting using this type of maps. There's several other providers already out there. Even in Norway, a local provider has had it for a few years now: http://kart.finn.no/ It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Google to produce data for my area - it's always taken quite a while before their product news reached this region.

It's so funny how that page gives a bit of a twisted view on plugins, especially on the photorealistic rendering. Just putting in an alphabetic list isn't the way to go.. I mean: Arielvision? Caravagio Render? lol ... They look like ray tracers of the nineties . When a Sketchup user is noob to rendering, they will get all lost in that list.

@michaelv said: @iichiversii said: Just another taught, or should I say question, if you were to create the same Model twice at the same scale, 1 made with tris and the other with quads would the number of polygons in the model created with tris be greater than the 1 made of quads, or would I be completely wrong? I don't know but here what I think: 1- It depends on the program, and the rules for creating the polygons 2- It depends on what is important (level of resolution, where) for each type 3- Why is the "greater" important? If it's to assess speed, it also will depend on speed of treatment, if you have less quads but they take longer to be treated, then no gain in speed right, so what is really the worry about the number? It's of no great importance, the size, just a quest for a better understanding of topology and the pros and cons of quads and the difference between them, that's all, I myself needed a better understanding of good topology and hopefully this will help others who seek a better understanding also in the future

My PurgeAll script also allows you to control what is purged - unlike the Model Info version which purges everything. With my script if, for example you don't want to purge unused layers, you can choose not to... You can also get a report written showing what has been purged...

Hi folks. You can control this using Window menu --> Model Info --> Components. Check or uncheck the last box at the bottom that is labeled Show component axes. Just ideas.

To be honest, I was imagining simply two or more edges/ arcs in the scene, not necessarily overlapping any faces. As if one were starting a new model or something. So I learned something here, too.

The scene is no longer useful in v8. Your GPU handles textures and styles while 1 core of your CPU handles geometry. So you want a good reliable GPU and a CPU with a high clock speed. -Brodie

Could be that the graphic card doesn't handle multiple 3d applications. Can you have multiple SketchUp windows open? Some users report that they can't have more than a couple, or even just one, SketchUp window - this appear to be related to the graphic card capabilities. Have you tried temporarily disabling Hardware Acceleration in SU - just to verify it's a graphic card issue.

Ah, right, the push/pull command! I ended up drawing a simplified set of planes (like a bunch of playing cards glued together end to end, at different elevations) then push/pulling the road drawing through the ring of cards, and intersecting with model. Worked like a charm. I also downloaded Instant Roads. Going to try out the demo some time in the future. Thanks for the help everyone

@richardu said: You understood perfectly and answered my question and more. Thank you. I'll do without seeing the edges from the visible side. Richard Hidden lines can be set in a scene. Normally you export views from scenes. Save a scene from one side with the lines showing, and save a scene from the other side with the lines hidden.
