BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Use the 3ds format! Texture files must be in same directory as the 3ds file. Texture file have to have max 8 digits names. 3ds file, when a single mesh is included has to be less than 64K faces. However, 3ds file may include lot of groups-meshes, each of them less than 64 K faces. Under macOSX, in newer builds of SketchUp8, 3ds importer is broken! I wonder when devs will have a look on this. I import using SU7 free. You may face difficulties related with the scale of the model, in general, make it 10x bigger before exporting. After you successfully have imported the 3ds, with UV textures, you can still edit the texture file (probably using Ps or Gimp) In cases like using png transparent textures for leaves-foliage, you'll have textures assigned on the outer face-normal. Use the "UV toolkit" plugin to "frontface to backface"

If you are looking to match the perspective distortion a human eye would see (which is different from cone of vision/field of view) then I created a DC that will calculate that -- however you will need to know the pixel dimensions of the SketchUp viewport. AOV calculator.skp Bring this DC into a scene as a component (do not open directly) and then choose "Component Options" from the DC toolbar. Best, Jason.

Sketchyphysics is pretty much the solution for a "quick" result. A similar recent thread mentioned the same thing. Otherwise, you will have to position each discrete object as a group or component. If this collection is just a background element, the obvious thing to do is apply an image of the collected objects to some form and put a jar around it.

I have used it to create animations and simulations of engineering projects built by others in my department [flash=600,410:1m4yup38]http://www.youtube.com/v/ZUL6S5JMxls[/flash:1m4yup38] The videos are produced as part of progress reports to partners and clients, and the models and animations help to illustrate functions that are difficult to see in real life, or which may be dangerous to film on-site.

Thanks. What I wanted to do was get a horizontal section through my entire model cutting off the bottom and the top. For what I wanted to do. I made the whole model a component and cut off the bottom with a section cut within the component. Then adding another section cut external to the model gave me what I needed.

@metaclay said: To fix this, i go to texture/position menu , do nothing , just press enter to confirm, then now texture is following correctly while i move the face ..... but only for that face. This is usually caused when the texture has the default positioning (when using the paint bucket one does not define the texture positioning; it's only then defined when you or a plugin sets/edits the texture position).

Purging will only get you rid of unused items (components, materials, styles, empty layers) but nothing that's used in the model. It's not any sort of a "clean-up" or "simplification" tool (but search for CleanUp in the Plugins index).

So I had a change of plan and I'm going to create a sort of a small scale golf course. What's the best way to raise up and lower the sand beds? Ideally I want a whole mesh so I can fine tune it how I want in the end. I guess for the sand beds it would be better to make geometry lines and use from contours, but i guess that will result in a separate mesh right? [image: Y5op_Fullscreencapture22062012022035.bmp.jpg] Something like the result i want. [image: Ground-For-Golf-Courses.jpg]

I once read an articale onlina about these virtual worlds like second life and Entropia Universe which have a virtual economy but in saying that they generate real money also, these worlds have the ability to import 3D models created from SU, and many members of the second life have used the warehouse to download funiture, buildings and so on to create there virtual homes, you can set up a business in these worlds selling models, for example a furniture shop, shrubs, maybe even a car sales company i think, imagine that, but now when i reserch it i find very little about selling models in these vurtual worlds, a virtual nite club sold for over $600,000.00 in real USD on Entropia Universe, and this isnt the only high selling item on these worlds, its staggering how much these worlds generate in real cash, and 3D Models are exactly what is selling here, has anyone have experience in this field?

Hi ! Good thing(or bad) is that this model was made for 3d printing, and the ropes will be added in reality . Anyway I saved a smooth model of it and I added some ropes over the geometry, in order to get a render too . [image: rNxo_HyperionforrenderingbyEliseiDesign.jpg] Another killer : I had to create the subframe of this . Imagine all the intersections and small faces and make it solid too !! [image: JOHc_CatwalkHyperionbyEliseiDesign.jpg] The frame is very heavy , I hope my PC will handle both, the balloon(plus gondola) and the frame. Take care !

In SU, As suggested already But: Add this -difficult to find these days- ruby. Download it here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/download/file.php?id=86061 This will remove inner faces (non manifolds). Very important because: In blender: -Import the obj -edit mode (TAB), [W] menu, remove doubles! This will weld all overlapping vertices automatically. -Hit [ctrl+N], it's the shortcut for fixing normals. (it will be a mess if non manifolds/inner faces exist!) SU UVs are still there and you may edit them in UV editor. TIGs obj exporter is an excellent tool! If you love blender (you should lol) and its new render engine (cycles), it's possible to model in SU only and just import. Some important things to know about blender. -You may wish to re scale SU imported objects. In this case after scale/rotation or other transformations, hit [ctrl+A], this brings up a menu, apply these data transformations. Now, bumps/displacements etc will work correctly. (blender avoids to do this automatically for a good reason, it has to do with its particles/instancing system) -you may face depth clipping in 3d view port. Under N panel / view, clip start-end, here your solution -I suppose, you already edited the default preferences of blender, making it similar to SU. -You already learned the shortcuts of transformations, yes? [G] for move-grab, [G]+[x or y or z] for direction, [G]+[shift+z] for moving in xy plane, etc etc , yes? You also learned how to use the excellent snapping methods of blender. If not, ask me.

http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=33448 But triangulation remains. Obj supports ngons, actually. Same ridiculous problem with newer blender builds. Though blender supports ngons (bmesh builds). Still the obj exporter converts them to tris. Zbrush is an app that does not support ngons. However, the importer will ask for the method to triangulate them, it even has a converter to quads as possible.

Yes, the computer is otherwise operating normally. Other apps don't show this, but SU will seem as if there is no input from the keyboard. But as I noted above (and this may vary), while the cursor moves fine it sometimes won't change the tool either, via icon. Seeing hardware acceleration mentioned in another thread-- I checked and I found it to be ON. Wonder when that changed. It may not be related but I'll report if I see a change. It will take a while to assess.

I was aware that su is not a 64 bit application and therfore not able to benifit easily from the extra ram. I do believe that my sysyem is a bit of a pig in using ram and may only leave about 2.5gb of the 4.0gb available for su to run on. The additional ram will bring me to 8 total (sorry I was not clear on that). I know this will help with certain portions of the rendering process in podium and my hope is that it will allow su to take and use all it can. Since I determined that I had two things causing my system to run slowly...1. overheating 2. I did not have the use hardware accelerator box checked. and now both those items have been fixed, I am running as smoothly as I ever have and that is not bad at all. So, my hope is that the additional ram will make things just a bit better than they ever were. Can't hurt. Tig you were right to end that last bit with a confused emot. I was, I am, and I will be even more confused if I dig into those threads. Thanks p

As a set designer I'd say that having a option of "set, prop and vehicle design" are all very different things and I for one have never designed a car! Great to see so many different disciplines being catered for by one great bit of software. Please Trimble be kind and not forget about the non-architectural user base. C
