BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@dave r said: I was able to scale in between by snapping the scale handle to the intersection of two guidelines with no problem. The scale factor displays as ~1.01 but it is indeed snapping to the intersection. Part of the problem is the shape of the object is not uniform, although it is flat. So, the scale handles do not fall on any part of the selection perimeter. HOWEVER You gave me an idea that almost works perfectly, at least within an acceptable error. I needed to scale the thickness at one end of a tapered tube with a tapered thick skin from about .45inch down to .250inch (and to other thicknesses as well). The tube is about 8 feet in diameter (but squarish in shape) so the thickness changes are minute in comparison. I added a short line from the objects scalable (inside surface) perimeter down to where a scale handle is located. I then laid a guide line offset by that length from where the scaling should end up. I selected the perimeter and the tiny line then scaled (centered and uniform) down to the offset guideline. I got as close as .252inch after a few tries, good enough. Now, I gotta do that about 10 different times with different thicknesses. As for setting units, Model Info does not provide for setting scale precision, as it does for lines and angles. But still, is there any way to up the scale precision? I tried Fredos scale, but it didn't help, mainly I guess, due to my lack of fully knowing how to use that tool.

Thank you TIG I appreciate the reply, My free trial Pro version of Sketchup will expire soon and I will try your Rescale suggestion and see if I can get it to work. I'll edit this post if it works! Appreciate all the help.

Why I have never got into DC's, myself. I've yet to see where they "save" work. Still hopeful.

I don't have Net Framwork installed for SketchUp (I think it's only required for Layout etc.), and some even recommended not to install it. On the other side, things change rapidely with Wine and I don't see a difference when I install .Net. As thomthom said, it's likely something with OpenGL. What you describe was more common many many years ago when you used a compositing window manager and a 3d app. So it would be useful to know which operating system version you use. The proprietary graphics cards often come a long way and new series achieve usable drivers a year after release. I've had good experiences with Intel.

{shameless plug} You could give BuildEdge PLAN a try! It automatically figures all of the geometry for you. You can take a look at everything that it does at http://www.BuildEdge.com. {/shameless plug} Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! Thanks! Aaron

I've begin to implement a check for TT_Lib2 in my plugins, so when it's not there a message will appear explaining it's needed and a direct link to download. New releases and updates will feature this.

Hehe, I just got one myself. Maybe I've gotten them before and never noticed since it pops up in the web browser. I think I've just closed the window, assuming it was telling me my bug was successfully reported. [image: c6k5_fixed.jpg]

On some models, I like to turn the "Use Sun for Shading" on, and turn the light slider down to like 15% and shadow slider up to 75%. Sometimes I feel like that lightens the entire model up nicely.

I've had a few models that this happens on regularly. One was made by another guy and I inherited it. That model would regularly have issues that ended up in deleted geometry. A few others I made myself from CAD imports. Its not too common, but also not completely uncommon. And maybe certain modeling habits lead to more problematic models. So its not really probable, but it is a theory of what could be happening Chris

Here: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=bc92eca8611ed04d2470944666440e50 If you do not like the texture on it, you can reload the material in the Material browser > In model library with your own - UV mapping will remain intact (note that this model is extremely high poly stuff - 90 segments were used instead of the default 24 segments in the circles when the sphere was created so expect some lags in SU). It was mapped with this plugin: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23725

Thanks, Rich. That is a relief. I did actually update my profile, when I restored my avatar, but it didn't stick. I'll try again. EDIT: It didn't stick because I balked at characterizing my level of expertise, which IMO should be self-evident but I don't want to argue about. EDIT some more: Not that I think you would, even if you would. I bet somebody would.

This reminds me of a connector I put together for a project a few years back for ridge and valley timbers over a log post. Didn't have the luxury of a plasma cutter though, so it was hand fabricated. It was pretty much mostly buried anyway but it made for an interesting structure. These kinds of details are fun to design. [image: c0wt_Picture2.png]

And briefly speaking: there is no such feature in SU as "stacking order" or "send back" etc. like there is in 2D applications (where there is no other way of solving the problem). SU is meant to be used in 3D where everything has some thickness or at least some distance from another object just like in "real life" and this should (ideally) prevent Z-fighting. A solution can be that you set these objects to cut a hole (i.e. "hide" what's underneath) but that also has its limitations as SU can only cut a hole on a raw face (and one face at a time) so if you are trying to put one component onto another, it will not work or if you want an object to cut a hole on two, adjacent faces (like in your example image), it will not work (only on one of them). So try to work in real 3D instead.
