Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

I use Jim's toolbar customizing plugin. I simply stripped off all the toolbars from the main SU window and made a single toolbar with some of the rarely used tool buttons (that I don't use hotkeys for) that I float beside the SU window and thus got rid of the dreaded toolbar screw-up forever. Now if there was a way to do this with all the plugins I have...

Also, check the size of them. How many pixels in height and width. Even though your texture might be bigger, SU's internal max size is 1024x1024 so there's no point going over that unless you use rendering engines. When uploading to Google Earth you can do with at least half that size.

plot-paris There's not just one "correct" workflow when working with this aplications, anyone can do the same things using diferent methods, and because the main tools are about the same if you master one of the apps you can probabaly do just about the same things in the other two (as soon as you know where every tool is). And that's not the only way to put a cube in top of other. You can move the entire cube and align it using the axes putting the units, snaping to other primitive (i supose the cube is one of the primitives), and so on. Moving each face of the cube can't be the only way (imagine you're moving the mesh of dragon with 30.000 faces...you won't move face by face). But you can see what i mean. The main diference between sketchup and the major 3D apps it's sketchup just working with faces and the others working with solids, nurbs and also faces. Other bigger diference, that for me is one of the things that is killing sketchup right now as a tool for 3D creatives, is beeing at the same time a presentation and modeling aplication. There's no render in sketchup, there's a optimized output, you present the model in the same space you use for modeling, "what you see is what you get" so the engine can't be fully optimized to just modeling or just rendering/output. In the other apps modeling and rendering it's completly diferent parts, what you see in the "model space" isn't what you're gonna get with the render. So sketchup and Maya/3DS Max/XSI can't really be compared, and don't worry about beeing faster doing in sketchup simple things because that's an illusion if you're comparing a master in sketchup with a master in 3DS Max (or any of the others), and a master in 3DS probably means that he also masters photoshop (because he also makes is own textures, bumps, spectacular maps and so on...) so his final presentation will always be better than the one from sketchup...These software can also be very specifics, there's firms that have people specialized just in modeling, other people just for texturing, animation, or rendering. There's even a animation with maya class in England (for example) of 3 years with a one class just for texturing that takes 6 months... The thing you have to ask is "Are you willing to have the patient, time, and dedication this kind of software needs to master it?" David

Sophie, I'm on XP Pro, and yes it works for me - never had any problems with either versions 6 or 7. Is it just this one file, or have you always had trouble with it? Is it certain fonts, perhaps?

Well, my approach would not have been too different from Jean's - what I meant was to draw the whole dome first and then use the Follow me tool to extrude a rib along one of the radial lines of the dome. THEN make the radial array. He just made it in a different order (and the "rib" was created differently). Ribbed dome.skp

Rhino's native sketchup export is not at all good, and will hopefully get a tune up before too long - it is likely it will be posted on the rhino labs page when they get around to it. In the meantime, try using these settings for a dwg export out of rhino, which i have had pretty good results from: I model in rhino in mm with a tolerance of .1 Autocad version - 2000 save curves as - splines save surfaces as - polygon meshes save polygon meshes as - polyface meshes curve options - use simple entities simplify tolerance .05 polygon mesh detailed options: as per model settings, which should be everything set to zero except max distance, edge to surface = 2 check refine mesh check simple planes in sketchup import dwg settings : millimeters, merge co-planer faces, but uncheck orient faces consistently as seems to come from rhino fine. The other way around this is to buy moi, and then immediately download the v2 beta, which has an absolutely fantastic sketchup exporter. Moi will open rhino files natively, and you can actually cut and paste between rhino and moi. - in fact, moi is coded by the same guy who originally created rhino; i just consider it a rhino plugin - it will pay for itself on the first job or two.... cheers rabbit

As Tricia mentioned earlier, it's a limitation in the OpenGL implementation under Windows. So a fix for this would rely on Microsoft...

I'd hold with the SLI until you can get things running stable. SLI is just another thing that might make things more complicated. In order to try to get to the bottom of this it's best to keep things simple.
