Is that real?!?! someone is a little out of touch with reality
maybe he should open again Photoshop 7 or CS, and Sketchup 4 or 5, and see which one evolved more in ~10 years...when we put this in this perspective it's just a really sad comparison for Sketchup 😞

      Hi Rich-

I wanted to clear up a misconception that I've seen a few times: LayOut issues do not directly compete with SketchUp issues for resources. LayOut has its own dedicated team! So, don't hesitate to submit LayOut requests.

      thanks,
      Marc

So...there's a dedicated team for Sk that in two years they could just do extension warehouse...

As for ideas for SK2014, I know I'll sound a bit crazy but, how about new features for the reason that Sketchup was built for: anything that can help, simplify and enhance 3D modeling, like better modeling tools, better UV mapping tools and some form for simulate other lights other than the sun, even if in any simple and basic way... Naah, please just make floating menus, more layout and bring susan back, I'm sure my models will be much better and faster with these.

    • RE: SketchUp 2014 Wishlist

      Hi Chris

I've been using Sketchup a little less in the last 1-2 years, and more 3DS Max (and Zbrush and Photoshop), and I understand your point in the viewports and agree with them even, but I think you're seeing this question (and maybe others) in the wrong way. Let me explain...

      • I also, in 3DS work, 99% of time work with just one viewport and I don't really think SK really needs that feature for what it does, but at least more viewports are really usefull when doing/testing any kind of animation, or even for just analysing results in modelling, and SK doesn't do that good enough to need it.
      • Besides viewports, you can apply the same logic to 64 bits/multicore. Example, in a project I did months ago I was having problems rendering FUR in 3DS, you see the fur is displayed as a preview in a simpler and with less hairs version, so that it can be used in real time, but at the time of render it as to be created, with the final size and quality, before starting the render itself and I couldn't fit this hair in 6Gb of RAM to even start to render the image, but after I update to 18Gb I could render it (6h total render time = 3h30 to create the geometry of the hair + 2h30 rendering the image). The calculated hair is stored at RAM (mine took ~16gb of use) as any result of things that have to be processed. Does SK needs it? No, because nothing in SK use it (maybe intersecting complex and heavy models...).

What I'm trying to say is that the SK team doesn't seem to see beyond what they already know. You shouldn't say "why do you need 64bits/multicore/viewports/GPGPU/etc if that isn't used/needed right now?" but rather "What can we do more/evolve with 64bits/multicore/viewports/GPGPU/etc?".

And one more thing, SK without basic plugins is useless for me, to the point that I'm faster modelling in 3DS than in SK, and that is saying something about SK's speed... It's beyond me why the SK Team thinks that basic stuff like welding a polyline or just push and pulling more than one face at the same time is something most casual or professionals (independent of what they do with SK) don't need so they should use a plugin, but a button for extension warehouse or for Google earth, or just Layout stuff, is more usefull for most of your Sketchup users... If Sk can't have nothing new, at least it should evolve what already have

      Best Regards

      David

P.S.: I don't think SK needs fur or viewports.

    • NEW SK Model Pack - 65 Design Furnitures

Hi Guys. Long time without posting.

I've been busy in the last times, and in one of my last computer clean-ups that I (try) to do after each project. I've re-found and gather some Sketchup models I've done for them, and put them in model pack with more than 65 models.

Most are from Design brands for furniture and some are really exotic (see attached PDF for full list). These models were made in Sketchup and to be used in Sketchup, so I normally try to find a good balance between detail and file weight. All the models are based in the real furniture measures and proportions because that's real important when planning a space, and the furniture had to be recognizable by the client even in just a image directly from Sketchup. Because large textures can make Sketchup slow and if I have to render I'll normally do it in MentalRay or Vray for 3DS Max, the materials may be too simple.

These furnitures are not super-high-poly-movie-quality models, but they can "survive" in middle to far renders, and some even close-up renders (see examples below),

Initially I was thinking in making a model pack with 8-12 models, because some models are simple (because of the design of most modern furniture), but then I remembered the work and trouble I've went through to find their measures and drawings, so maybe they can be usefull for someone here too, and just see them as a bonus πŸ˜„.

I've put the Imola Chair by Boconcept as the free model for premium users and the PDF with all the furniture can be found here and in the download for the free sample for free users.

The model pack (20$ for premium users and 25$ others) can be found here:

I hope you guys like it and that it can help some here πŸ˜„

    • RE: Quadro fx 3800 upgrade

      Don't think so...
Sketchup won't take much use of better graphics card (or even multiple) and can't use more thatn the 4Gg of ram.
Your best option is to put everything in layers and turn off everyone that you're not using while modeling, and avoid using big texture maps and turn them off while modeling.

Wow, very nice model and details indeed.
My only critic is that some stuf should be higher poly and your corners are too sharp (no 90ΒΊ corners in reality)
      other than that great work

    • RE: Weld beads, frayed ends & ribbon

I can really see the passion you've put in all the details, JMJOhio.
I didn't complete understand what you wanted with the "welds" (english is not my native language), but for the belts (that by the way don't look bad) if you want a more detail and natural feeling maybe the best way to do it is trying to make a curve with lots of segments (bezier) and adjust it by hand to a more natural look and then use it to "follow me" (but you'll probably need to scale up your model first to avoid problems with very small faces). The other way is import it to other software with dynamics and just make a straight belt there subdivide it and "let" them fall with gravity simulation. But again, for me they don't look bad
      Great work

that's really really nice Steve. Now give that model a nice background and image treatment πŸ˜‰

And the secret for understanding the subdivide plugins is having a good basic topology, once you have that you can predict how the model is going to turn out once you subdivide it
