I'd be surprised if the engines themselves were really different. I'd suspect that at least most of the time the quality difference is part user and part modeling program. Sketchup has a lot more novice users than 3ds max. Max is a beast to learn and is crazy expensive so is scares off most of the hobbyists. Also, you can add a level of detail in Max that is rarly seen in SU, and often those details make all the difference in renderings. -brodie

Well I found a way that seems to work - will test more after church. I printed the object in SU using the free CutePDF client at high quality with HLR checked; saved it as a PDF. Illustrator (and Flash versions 8 or older) opens this fine and the strokes remain strokes so you can edit them. All the corners came in perfect.

The gluing function made it impossible to put the objects side by side. They were put in the model on a face. I don't know if one moved once the face's layer was off. Yeah, that option is on Mac too but occasionally, the SU entity info will get this little glitch in it and some of the info is seeming stuck to the edge. Expanding the dialog box doesn't help.

Thanks Tig, just needed a little lateral thinking. The workflow I was using was to create the walls with dline.rb, which obviously doesn't create the floor slab, I was then telling myself I needed to trace the room boundary. Using what you have suggested it is easy enough to open the wall group, redraw one of the inner edges of the wall to create the face that forms the floor. Select the face WITHOUT the boundary edges and edit>cut. If you select the face AND boundaries the edit>cut will destroy the original geometry. Close the wall group and then paste in place to create the floor which can then be pushpulled, grouped & layered as required.

I've been having troubles closing the files. Everytime I close one it hangs and says the program does not respond (I work in spanish so I don't know the equivalent in english). I'd say this started when I installed SU8 without deleting SU7. But I need them both!

Hi Martin, I am a Podium user and I agree with Gaieus that you should look to the Podium forum for help. The issues you are experiencing sound render related not sketchup related. When you post your question at the Podium forum give as much info as possible ie podium version your using, preset used, image of render, etc. Also If you are new to podium, check out the lighting and other tutorials found at the Podium forum.
