hello TIG, Thanks for your suggestion. This wouldn't give me the look I was aiming for. I already started to do it manually. Greetings, Max

I'm glad that solved the problem. It's been my experience that materials within components and especially sub-components will cling on to their former identities with a tenacity that is awesome to behold. Sometimes, not even name changes of material and component are enough. For instance, here is a file containing a Face Me tree I got from the warehouse. I have edited it. The name of the png, the name of the material and the name of the component are now all 'summer'. The file itself is called tree summer. I have also attached an edited version of the png in autumnal colours...called fall. Download both, open the skp, then in Materials edit specify the fall image. Also change the name of the Material to fall. Also edit the component properties and change its name to fall. Save the resulting file as tree fall.skp. You now have summer and autumn versions. Open them each separately and they both look exactly as expected. Now open a new file and import them both. Of course, you wouldn't normally nest a Face Me this deep, but I'm just using it as an easy example of the problem with sub-components. There is a solution, but you really shouldn't have to take things that far. tree summer.skp [image: kyxP_fall.png]

Whenever you install or reinstall a script you must restart Sketchup [unless you are Ruby-savvy enough to use load "xxxxx.rb" !] You can 'bend' any geometry as long as it's in a group or a component-instance. As Gai says you must have a line and an arc and the grouped geoemtry, all correctly oriented - as clearly explained in the thread... As for bending 3d Text... there are already some posts about that - read through the thread. Any 3d Text is only a lot of geometry - the 2d outline of each letter is extruded into a 3d object... So all you need to do is to group all of this geometry first, and then proceed as with any other shape-bending...

That is a really a good question to which I would also like to know the answer!! Installing the plugins for Sketchup will be so advantageous and I am really looking forward to the tutorial for this one!! Hope we get an early soon so that we can make use of it right away!!

It certainly would be wonderful to have a way to keep each of the plugins and all the files associated to it together and I am sure that someone will look into it seriously and come with some solution! In the meanwhile, the suggestion that Jeff has sounded seems to be good enough for the time being – think it’s worth trying!!

@ecohomes said: @dave r said: As to the furniture flying off, I imagine it is like the car example you posted last week. The car looked like it was placed correctly from one angle but you hadn't actually placed the car on the driveway. It was floating in space. You need to get to grips with placing components properly. I would suggest that you spend some time working on learning to use the Move tool and Inferencing. Getting those skills nailed down will go a long way in helping you make your models look like you want them. Thank you Dave - I have in the mean time ascertained that one must bring them into the model from the "Gluepot" for them to stick. Thank you again for your courtesy and time. Hans I often use the VCB for moving my models vs the move tool. Say you have a model and you want to move to the origin pick the desire point with the move tool to start and the type [0,0,0] and that will move to there. If you want to keep the same y dim then type [x,,z]. Check manual I find this method very helpful

That really sounds like a weird problem that you seem to have of not being able to work Soapskinbubble after reinstalling SU – never heard of this!! The problem seems to have been solved finally but I would like to try Ferrai which has been so highly spoken of – seems worth a try!!

@jprokos said: Do any of you think there is a ruby plugin around that will stop SketchUp from creating a new file every time it's run? John you can't use rubies until Sketchup has loaded the window [that you don't want], however you can write an applescript or automator or similar (keystroke macro app) to launch SU> click on the File menu > click close, > click new or recent files... you could then choose from the last few. I've got scripts that I've wrapped in an apps in my menubar items, so you can get to them anytime. there is a slight problem with this approach when some of the rubies load other bits on startup. This is because it slows the loading and macros can't tell when to click so you either need long delays [1>2 secs] or wrap all of the offending rubies so they when you want them, but not at every startup. If you have a search for sumac in the forum you'll see some of my apps that start SU differently for different things, i.e. paste script into console. it would be trivial to adapt one to open on the recent items menu. john

Sorry Pixbae, I only just spotted your question. Follow Me is one of the basic tools that comes with SU. As I've already said, this tutorial doesn't use any plugins...that's why it's called vanilla flavoured. This is the problem with Pilou's approach; if you don't even know what Follow Me is, then for the sake of your own learning curve, if nothing else, you shouldn't be going anywhere near Ruby scripts. Learn the basics first. You'll then have a much better understanding of which plugin to use when...and how you can fix it if things go wrong. The diamond pattern is produced by simply drawing diagonals across all the quads, in a diamond pattern. Yes...simple maths. The torus had 72 segments, because that was the number of segments on the circle being followed by the template in scene 1. I reduced it to 2 segments...so it's obviously going to take another 35 copies of that double segment to remake the complete circle.

It can be so frustrating to develop such problems like being able to see only the “blank white drawing window” which makes it impossible for any work to be done especially when you are working on projects like these!! Since the cards are giving him problems, it sure seems to be something to do with the issue!

Hi Djcorbetto, hi folks. After drawing the cylinder, draw another one to be used as drilling bit. Orient the drilling bit properly using the Move Tool and the Rotate Tool untill it is positionned in such a way that it intersect the first cylinder. Once this positionning is done, select the drilling bit (well ... the second cylinder) and do an intersection. Delete unwanted parts. If you have the Pro version, as it seems to be the case. you can use the Solid Tools to subtract the second cylinder from the first. Beware that, in SU, geometries are sticky. They attached themselves to other geometries. In your case, it would be preferable to first group the second cylinder since making groups and component is the only way to avoid interaction between geometric entities. This separation is very useful in allowing precise positioning of a geometry in regard to another. However, keep in mind that geometries must be in the same context for intersection to work. You will need to Explode the group before doing the intersection. The Solid tools, on the other hand, require that the objects that must interact, be individual groups. Search and read the help about all the above mentionned Tools and functions. Just ideas.
