As someone who has been a noob for a long time, I found there are some plugins for cleaning up the model that are helpful at the beginning: Default layer geometry (get all your edges and faces back on the default layer) Remove Lonely Vertices (join edges that have unnecessary vertices into one) FrontFace tool (get your faces oriented correctly) Make Faces (get faces to form, especially on imported edges) Everyone would say work with the basics for awhile , and don't make the mistakes in the first place; but plugins like the above help you get back on track, 'cause things happen. Your approach to the work, as in other realms, is probably more important than what tools you have. Starting out one could quickly make a mess with some of the plugins out there. There are some in the "must have" plugin index that will get you a step further like Joint Push Pull and Fredoscale. Don't forget Sandbox Tools which comes with your SU and can do a lot with contours and manipulating terrain shapes.

This reminds me of one of the other great things about SU, I can open all my legacy drawings but my BIM software leaves me with a load of unresolved components if I try to open anything more than two years old

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=wire+shelf&styp=m&btnG=Search Do a search for 'wire shelf' etc or whatever it is you seek... The 3dWarehouse can be a good starting point... although some things might need to be adjusted as not all contributors are fastidious modelers...

thanks, I will keep that in mind and bookmark this page. I'm not yet ready to do what I thought needed to be done, as a design issue cropped up yesterday and needs to be solved first. I may be "forced" to get back into SketchyPhysics as a result, something I shoulda done long ago.

you may try if disabling the Windows desktop composition does have any effect: "Right Click on SU > Properties > Compatibility tab > Settings > Disable desktop composition" [image: 259d1225821393-compatibility-mode-settings.jpg] hth, Norbert

Hi, Why Sketchup. Because SketchUp is very easy to learn. If one has understood the use of standard tools there are very quick steps to the first success. I had found six years ago a video tutorial which consisted of twelve lessons. In these lessons, the use of standard tools were shown. I tried all the techniques shown in parallel with "Sketchup". Within four weeks I was able to take the first small projects undertaken. Of course, I've made many mistakes. Then I Found the SketchUcation forum, and learned much among others the various plugins to know. The rest was practice and practice again and again. And that's what makes Sketchup. You can learn the use of the standard tools very quickly and you can have great success with. The whole construction techniques are easier to accomplish in Sketchup, as this is the case in many other programs. Other 3D programs also have their place, because Sketchup is not the "non plus ultra" in the 3D programs. Sketchup has its limitations e.g. in the design of organic shapes. Before a decision is always the question, for what purpose I want to use a special 3D program. Charly

Well, subscribing (and paying) is the way to become a member so that you can log in and finally download there. Frankly, I also like freebies. But if a client wants something that is not accessible as a freebie, there are two solutions: you purchase the pay item and charge the client with the extra cost if you can (especially if he is so picky then he should pay for it) you purchase the pay item hoping that you can use it in the future, in other projects, too and consider it as an "investment" If you often work for clients with such extra wishes, it may be worth subscribing to FF. They have nice, high quality stuff there so it could make a nice turnover after a while as your work would be more quality, too.

Great idea... Photoshop can be used extremely well in this situation. If he wants to do different angles, that is a whole other story. I modeled a whole pirate ship in Sketchup and rendered it in Kerkythea, but needed many different angles of the ship. So I used photoshop for the sky and water, but still had to render all the angles/lighting for each shot. Pirate Ship1 Pirate Ship2

I think the idea from SketchUp is Hassle and Support. I think it's legal and proper what you are doing and I think Google understands a small businesses need to save costs. I believe that they see it as a hassle that you have to go through to save that money, ie employees moving about to complete work. but in reality you could do everything Pro does (with the exception or a north arrow and Google Maps grabs) with plugins or by taking .skp files to other software. although you won't get Layout 3 which is also a very valuable addition. By purchasing one or more of the Pro versions you're eliminating your hassles and showing your support for the software and the platform. I would feel more comfortable with you situation if only one employee was doing the exporting with pro and other users simply used the free version on their system. but in my opinion I think you're ok right now. I don't know if we'll get a Google Rep in here to publicly comment on this, but there are quite a few here and I would think they will see it. so we may get an official answer... welcome to the forum btw and we'd love to see some of your work.

Thanks Csaba - I think we tried the driver, but I am trying to get him to swap the card out with another machine of the same spec to see if the card is what is malfunctioning. At least that is under warranty.

To clarify, by @unknownuser said: realistic drafting , are you asking for rendering plugins? There are a number of threads discussing all the various rendering plugins. You could start with this one: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=3220 on which I posted a spreadsheet (that needs updating and more information) to start to compare features. Here is the most recent version: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=3220&start=45#p332219 Hope that helps a little.

serpentine 5 Started with your model post , changed to SU7, quick check showed 78 broken lines , 39 stray lines. Flatten it to remove any question about planer. If you select various faces in the model you will see areas where they are selected and they should not based on wall etc. Some are caused by coplanar lines , duplicate faces etc. Where these errors came from? Probably as TIG stated but they can also be caused by you as you make the model. Make sure you spend some time on the video tuts so you under stand inferenceing use. Once you get to this model level it can get difficult to correct so slow down and hurry up is the best approach. There are plugins that can help you trouble shoot but best to under stand the SU basic capability first.

@unknownuser said: @gaieus said: Also do not forget to purge unused components before saving as a template. likewise, purging will rid the template of all her colors so you'll be able to start off with a blank slate of materials.. That's were all those were coming from! Man, I feel so dumb right now.

Can you upload a .skp of the problem file? I think if it's below 4mb the forum will allow you to upload. Then we can test it to see if it's a corrupt file or that your PC is whacked.

@jgb said: And corroding aluminum with cola is not a party trick. Unless the party goes on a few days, and you get a source of uncoated aluminum. Foil won't do. It's not a myth, I HAVE seen it myself. But equally you could argue the same about vinegar and lemon juice! And what about all those who chew lime (the alkaline version), areca nut and betel in countries like India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka? Can you imagine salad without vinegar, or hummus without lemon? Heavens forbid! As for caffeine, tea and coffee have copious amounts of that. Life without coffee??? Arghhhhh let me out of here!!!! ......the thread?.......what thread......?
