BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

There's also the Unfold Tool by Jim. I did this in N-scale: [image: 5356417176_1c6b05956e_z.jpg] From: [image: 5355804283_aaf9ed2243_z.jpg]

Hi to All Thanks Jeffe, Thanks Simon Really some Rubies are well-hidden. A multi-entries glossary of all plugins is a necessity to avoid such idiot questions. I am not a database specialist but I think it's feasable. Of course I will be fired (By who knows) for saying that. Thanks ThomThom for your generosity.

Tgi3D SU Amorph's "view locking" feature also makes it very easy to draw curves in 3D. Simply draw the curve and "view lock" it from an angle you like and adjust the topology in other views. You can change the view lock to other views as you continue. Remember Ogan's palamar knot in the Speed Modeling Challenge #38 - Fishing? It would have been a lot harder to draw the initial topology of the knot without the "view locking" mechanism. [image: 9QTE_palomar3.jpg] Below is the video of how "view locking" works. @unknownuser said: @broomstick said: What could be an issue is that Sketchup Models lack the face "subdivision" which is common for 3ds max solids, so tools like meshsmooth, bend, turbosmooth and other things will not work properly on an imported model! I'm assuming you mean SU models are made up of n-gons. This is easily overcome by using the cut tool that comes with Artisan to make your meshes all quads. I'm talking about topology, I don't think 3ds max recognizes loops and rings in the imported 3D (but I have to check!). It is true I read about a re-topologize thingy in the new Max 2011

Thanks for the help! Dumb me, I was using the "get models" under the file menu. When you import models this way you get just the model. If you go to google warehouse with a web browser and then click "download model" and then click "open in sketchup" you get the scenes. I did not know that layers that are turned off could be a problem. I will check this out. thanks again! I think I need the "stupid" ruby mentioned earlier.... s

I started quite the debate. Thanks again for all the input. Some of these ideas I haven't even thought of. If you look at my second posting of the skp that is how the client imagined it to me - I haven't added the stem on the top like Solo did yet(at least I hope so - now I'm a little worried). If I'm wrong or my customer is wrong, I have a lot of ideas to work from. Unfortunately there's no second perspective image to look at. The coloring on it is more for effect than actual dimensioning. If you look at the coloring on the top lip, it suggests the same coloring on the back side - the blue on the left is just arbitrary coloring - festive, huh? I have another of the series that I could use some help with if you don't mind my picking the collective brain one more time. I'll post that one as a separate thread.

Can you eliminate some contours? Try using only the index contours (ie every 5'). If it absolutely has to be accurate to the 1' interval you might need to look at a different program like Simmuterra. You could also try using ThomThom's edge tools to simplify the contours and possibly eliminate some of the triangulated faces. Or use Cpoint Drape to retriangulate if the mesh is too dense. Or block out the detailed detention pond area, complete the rest of your modeling, and bring that area back into the model at the very end.

Yeah, I did almost the same thing before uploading...I drew a cube around 2 of the problem faces, intersected with model, then deleted the rest of the mesh and got a solid with out touching the red faces. When I tried to paste the now corrected face back in the original model, it reverted to 'not solid'

I did some comparisons by generating terrain meshes using various other methods including the from scratch sandbox tool and the strange speckles were present in all of them. Thinking it might have something to do with my computer, I tried it on two other machines with different operating systems with the same result. I turned on hidden geometry and zoomed in as close as possible with the aid of the screen magnifier and was able to determine that it only occurs when two lines come into contact with each other on a parallel plane. As the model is rotated or moved and the lines come apart again, the "speckles" vanish again. It appears to be a Sketchup bug of some sort.

It is also possible to make a plugin to switch templates quickly. I made one a long time ago for SU6 before similar features were included by Google. http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2007/08/plugin-template-utilities.html It might still work in version 8, but I need to check.

We didn't want to have ads anywhere on our Forum. Also, it someone was searching for "Nighttime Scene" on our site, they might get an ad for one of our competitors, sites. So it is worth $100.00 per year to eliminate the ads. [image: wkmw_nighttime.jpg]
