Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@massimo said: You can, for example, draw the projection of the roof cutting your plan, then use the "project faces on face along vector" in order to extrude each part of the subdivided walls on the respective gable of the roof. Looks cool! If it works with SU8 further explanation is required! Eg: Will it work between objects in different groups?!

Hi Larry, It seems to me that there is a plugin that will do what you need but the name escapes me. I'll do some hunting but someone else may come up with the answer before I do. In the meantime, I had a poke at your model. I noticed a wee little line segment in the Left Side Wall component. You may need to deal with that in your model. I don't know if it will matter for your application but you may also need to adjust the axes for some of the components so the bounding boxes fit the geometry. [image: tMFq_spot.png]

I think I see what you're talking about now. Running another test with 25 spheres I found that using a projection map created a file that was 1.3mb smaller than the same file with the same texture applied to the sphere with a non-projection map (not Whaat's sphere uv, but just the generic sloppy SU mapping) and both files were significantly larger in size than just adding the geometry plus the image files size. What I'm still not seeing is SU preserving UV coordinates on an object after a texture has been removed. If I create a bunch of spheres I get a file of 2.0mb, map them with a 50kb image and I get a 4.3mb file. Apply the default material to all the spheres and the file size drops back to just over 2.0mb and running thomthom's cleaner brings it all the way back to original size. -Brodie

Just a quick update. PhotoSculpt doesn't like the 90 degree angle between views, but it did process a couple of them. Unfortunately, it took the cloud shadowing as the main difference in levels between the two views & has created a few hills in the flat site! I haven't tried to import the exported OBJ model into SKUP - it's 187Mb & not practical to work with. Back to the drawing board... I might try just importing the site plan into SKUP & setting one of the views as a background watermark. I might be able to align the plan with the view & work from there.

Were they high res textures? What happens if you paint on some of the textures included with SketchUp just as a test? Will they still disappear?

Ah, so you mean the welcome screen? Just uncheck the "always show on startup" box at the bottom left. [image: daqJ_WelcomeScreen.png] As for the endpoints; go to Window > Styles > In model > Edit > Edge settings and uncheck endpoints. Best is to do this with an empty, new file - then update your style (click on its image with the two, round arrows) or even make any other changes you like then go to the File menu > Save as template (and don't forget to check at the bottom left to use this as default).

@jason_maranto said: As I said Maxwell will not respect Sketchup section cuts at all -- the sample scene from Gaieus contains a section cut (which again Maxwell does not see or render). If you wish to do a section cut effect and not use Z-Clip Planes then you will have to manually separate the geometry and set the group you want to be "cut away" to "hide from camera"... like this: <!-- ia0 -->SectionCut_j.skp<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:19y7atlf] All you need to do is select the section plane and context click to choose "create group from slice", then explode any geometry necessary to let the new "section plane" group divide the relevant geometry... then group the parts you wish to hide and context click to select Maxwell>Hide from>Camera. Here's the resulting render: <!-- ia1 -->SectionCut_j.jpg<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:19y7atlf] Best, Jason. WOW thank you very much! I am able to reproduce the results from your explanation I have tried the "hide from camera" option before but I think it failed because I didn't group it first. Thanks again

Look in the 'Tools' menu for 'Angular dimension'... Not every loaded script shows an entry under the 'Plugins' menu... You can often find in which menu a tool will appear by opening its .rb file in a plain text-editor [like Notepad.exe] and looking for the menu code, which is usually near the end of the text - it's usually clear where it shows and what it's called... That's what I just did to tell you where to look...

Some apps simply 'unzip' and dump all of the zip's contents into one folder without subfolders, unless you 'extract' them when they keep their subfolder structure!

Well, as I do not use Maxwell, I cannot really tell what's going on. The above example is mainly for native SketchUp as SU does not render image transparency when it comes to shadows. Maybe Maxwell cannot render alpha transparency either and would need clipmaps when rendering. But in any case, if renderers can use image transparency for clipping, the above solution only works if they can either render double sided materials (or what) like in V-ray or they can ad shadow to a completely transparent material (like Thea).

If you have applied materials to the backs of faces models the wrong way round there are also tools like 'FixReversedFaceMaterials' [do a search] - that tool finds all faces in a selection that have a material on the back but not the front, it then reverses them and swaps the material from back to from keeping the UV mapping so any textures appear exactly the same as they were before, but now all faces are hopefully correctly oriented and 'materialed'... Sometimes simply reversing faces to be consistently oriented won't work without lots of subsequent reapplication of textured materials and UV mapping adjustments - this does it in one step...

I believe that SketchUp exports images at the resolution of your monitor, say 72 or 96 dpi (dots per inch). You printer setting may be, say 300 dpi. So the print will be 96/300, or .32 times smaller then what you see on the screen. SketchUp was never designed to export or print scaled drawings. I think it is possible to match a exported image to a printer, but you have to calculate the print (not paper) size in dpi, then export the image at (in my case) 300/96=3.125 times the SketchUp window size. Say my SketchUp display is 1100x900 dpi (you can get this with the print functions), then I must export the image at 1100X3.125 by 900X3.125. SketchUp has some export limits I do not recall off hand. If all you want to do is print from SketchUp a image as large as you can on your printer, set the printer properties to "scale to fit". This will typically be a low resolution image. To get around that, export a large image to a file, open the file with the default viewer, and print "scale to fit". In any case, always print with a preview, that way you can see if the result is what you want.

I have used Global Mapper quite a bit to generate contours for import to SU. The largest I have done was about 2000 acres. You may want to play with the contour interval to speed up SU. I generated a terrain model with 2' contours on 2000 ac. SU ran all night. When It was complete, I had to zoom WAY back (really far). Good Luck, sounds like a cool project.

Jim, I'm not trying to be arugmentative. I'm trying to find out where you find it impossible to get the actual dimension. Perhaps to help you out with it. I have done a lot of dimensioning in LO and while I've had some gripes with it, it has always given me the actual dimension between the two points I select. Would you show an example--upload the SU and LO files--so we can see when it fails?
