BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

I haven't know about the"Purge Unused" function until you showed me. Yes, measure units are the same in the 3D MAX and SU (mm). However, it is a bit strange that the model looks fine when reproduced through my PC with SU [image: g5Wf_SU.JPG]

I have been dealing with a similar kind of project, so maybe these comments help you. I had a pdf document with all the contour lines. Actually some really helpful people in this forum helped me to convert the pdf into skp file (pdf => dxf => skp). Anyway, if you don't have these softwares I have found that the best way is to trace the contour lines form image file of the terrain/contours. Workflow would be: Import the image file and scale it to the right size Trace the contour lines with Catmull Spline - tool (bezierspline plugin) and using top view Put all the contours on certain layer that corresponds the height value (contour height 20m => layer: 20m) Use Edge tools or simplify contours plugins to simplify the contours if needed Use front/back view and use the move tool to put the contour lines to certain height Use Sandbox tool to create the terrain Anyway, I don't know detailed you need to be and how big is the terrain. This is the map of the project that I have been dealing with. [image: q5M5z.jpg]

@frascati said: Ok, did I finally wear out my welcome with this post? Am I so bone stupid that I'm just getting ignored? Would anyone simply try this with a single line segment in a new model and get back to me with the, no doubt, four neuron maximum instructions on what I'm doing wrong? Don't think because I didn't reply that I was ignoring you. Shortly after my last post I got in the car to make the drive to my father's house. Since the OM won't be needing a house anymore, we gotta get busy cleaning it out so we can sell it. As I already wrote, if you don't stop on the second endpoint and you don't make the second click, it won't offer to scale. When you enter the distance it'll put the guide point out there.

@unknownuser said: I would be curious what he's doing with the .jpg's. I wonder if he's just wanting to use the .jpg's as a replacement for thumbnails since they don't work for many people. If so perhaps, he should try MysticThumbs instead which would be a better solution. -Brodie One of the problems thumbnail processing may have is that "modern" thumbnail generators can make large thumbnails for Vista and Windows 7, but programs which haven't been updated much still make old XP sized thumbnails. Here is an image of "Extra Large" Windows 7 thumbnails for a folder with images, movies and SketchUp models: So things that want to process thumbnails well may not have much to work with with SketchUp thumbnails. I was suggesting that you contact them since you are using their plugin. I don't use it so they'd have no reason to help me with it. It would be better if you contact them directly so there's no one in the middle.

I did not mean the unit (that should not matter even if you change it on the fly while modelling) but the scale. If you use the Tape Measure tool to measure a side of the building, what do you get? (I also model in centimetres)

@unknownuser said: how to do when my surface is allready in form? i can't bend a surface to match the curve perfectly arround my door! You could also use shape bender which is better to curve around already existing curves. @unknownuser said: finally i divided my line of rounded bricks and rotated each brick texture one by one Well, that's also a solution - and I have often done that myself so don't worry. They look nice now!

@massimo said: You can, for example, draw the projection of the roof cutting your plan, then use the "project faces on face along vector" in order to extrude each part of the subdivided walls on the respective gable of the roof. Looks cool! If it works with SU8 further explanation is required! Eg: Will it work between objects in different groups?!

Hi Larry, It seems to me that there is a plugin that will do what you need but the name escapes me. I'll do some hunting but someone else may come up with the answer before I do. In the meantime, I had a poke at your model. I noticed a wee little line segment in the Left Side Wall component. You may need to deal with that in your model. I don't know if it will matter for your application but you may also need to adjust the axes for some of the components so the bounding boxes fit the geometry. [image: tMFq_spot.png]

I think I see what you're talking about now. Running another test with 25 spheres I found that using a projection map created a file that was 1.3mb smaller than the same file with the same texture applied to the sphere with a non-projection map (not Whaat's sphere uv, but just the generic sloppy SU mapping) and both files were significantly larger in size than just adding the geometry plus the image files size. What I'm still not seeing is SU preserving UV coordinates on an object after a texture has been removed. If I create a bunch of spheres I get a file of 2.0mb, map them with a 50kb image and I get a 4.3mb file. Apply the default material to all the spheres and the file size drops back to just over 2.0mb and running thomthom's cleaner brings it all the way back to original size. -Brodie

Just a quick update. PhotoSculpt doesn't like the 90 degree angle between views, but it did process a couple of them. Unfortunately, it took the cloud shadowing as the main difference in levels between the two views & has created a few hills in the flat site! I haven't tried to import the exported OBJ model into SKUP - it's 187Mb & not practical to work with. Back to the drawing board... I might try just importing the site plan into SKUP & setting one of the views as a background watermark. I might be able to align the plan with the view & work from there.

Were they high res textures? What happens if you paint on some of the textures included with SketchUp just as a test? Will they still disappear?

Ah, so you mean the welcome screen? Just uncheck the "always show on startup" box at the bottom left. [image: daqJ_WelcomeScreen.png] As for the endpoints; go to Window > Styles > In model > Edit > Edge settings and uncheck endpoints. Best is to do this with an empty, new file - then update your style (click on its image with the two, round arrows) or even make any other changes you like then go to the File menu > Save as template (and don't forget to check at the bottom left to use this as default).

@jason_maranto said: As I said Maxwell will not respect Sketchup section cuts at all -- the sample scene from Gaieus contains a section cut (which again Maxwell does not see or render). If you wish to do a section cut effect and not use Z-Clip Planes then you will have to manually separate the geometry and set the group you want to be "cut away" to "hide from camera"... like this: <!-- ia0 -->SectionCut_j.skp<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:19y7atlf] All you need to do is select the section plane and context click to choose "create group from slice", then explode any geometry necessary to let the new "section plane" group divide the relevant geometry... then group the parts you wish to hide and context click to select Maxwell>Hide from>Camera. Here's the resulting render: <!-- ia1 -->SectionCut_j.jpg<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:19y7atlf] Best, Jason. WOW thank you very much! I am able to reproduce the results from your explanation I have tried the "hide from camera" option before but I think it failed because I didn't group it first. Thanks again

Look in the 'Tools' menu for 'Angular dimension'... Not every loaded script shows an entry under the 'Plugins' menu... You can often find in which menu a tool will appear by opening its .rb file in a plain text-editor [like Notepad.exe] and looking for the menu code, which is usually near the end of the text - it's usually clear where it shows and what it's called... That's what I just did to tell you where to look...

Some apps simply 'unzip' and dump all of the zip's contents into one folder without subfolders, unless you 'extract' them when they keep their subfolder structure!
