BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Thanks TIG, but that method takes removes the information (the tags) from the dxf - I'm hoping that there's a way to import each block's attribute data into a DCs attributes. Seeing as your script parses the incoming data stream to create the 3D text, would it be possible to create a text block for each icon, from each Autocad Block? Certainly it does what it says on the tin though, thanks and yes, you're right it does run for a while - for my data it was best to do it in batches of 100 icons at a time: [image: W2He_treetest.JPG] bjornkn, this would work well as a complement to Alan's method above, thanks.

tibet The 33+MB model size is too large for this stage of your model especially if is part if a larger model. You should get rid of all the high poly count groups because many of those can be made a single component. I have the model reduced to about 888KB. In terms of your question I am thinking you maybe getting your self in a box. If you look at any "typical" spiral stair case the railing is on the out side. Your approach would tend to funnel the user toward the side where the tread width goes toward zero. In addition the slope for a rail would very high ( Towrads infinity ) there since the run goes toward zero at that inside corner. If you want a spiral case make it a classic approah where you can model a "reasonable" hand rail. If not go to a more conventional single mid landing approach at the 90 turn. Check the 3d ware house for some ideas. BTW Howard Leslie has two DC stair builder skp files you may find useful to get some ideas. Sorry could not quickly find the URL Just some thoughts Got the link http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=29484 A concept thought and different layout approach http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=cb5b0fddc3e546d848da91396cd7935f

@chedda said: Select your layer or create a new one then paste it in from another window Well, I was hoping that it can be done somehow automatically. I'll group the component's content and put it on a layer. It's about LOTS of components... and is very time consuming to manually select/create, and so on... And there is the risk to lost consistency. All models must have same layer structure. Thanks all for clearing this out to me !

Is it me or has it gotten unpredictable to export to autocad? When I export to cad I am always noticing missing pieces, especially with sections. What you see on the screen should be what you get.

Option one: Disable sun and use only GI for lighting. Option two, what I have used for scenes like the one you posted: Add a surface where the ceiling should be, on the side facing the interior, apply a material. One the side facing the camera, apply a transparent material. That makes it opaque for shadows and external lights, but the camera still sees inside. You then need to place lights inside to light it.

Do you have any transparency on the trees? If you do, turn it off and that might help. Atlernatively, you don't have that many trees; could you swap them for low-poly 3D?

Also try turning on hidden geometry (View>Hidden Geometry). That will allow you to edit/delete portions of the terrain mesh that shouldn't be there.

Back Edges only works with vector lines. It doesn't work with raster lines which is what all the sketchy line styles are. So you're out of luck on that one. You could get different line colors if you apply materials (colors) to different lines but that won't be a style setting so you'll have to do it for each model.

Well there you go. If I had of seen that thread earlier then I wouldnt have been so surprised about 14.7 million edges. (I am trying to double that atm though ) I'm going to try out the Susan challenge and see what I get as well. I'm still quite surprised though as the card that is running in that machine that I used for this file is actually pretty crap.

@gilles said: TIG extrusion tools CF shape bender follow-me some_work.rb You should really decrease the amount of segments of arcs and radius and use components as often as possible ( my model is only 440 KiB and could be reduce). Just for the pleasure. Thanks Gilles..hats off man...

Thought here: Orginator created cenetr line for the sections using the arc tool and then used either follow me and keep or shape bender plugin to add the " thickness" along the selected ref line either edge or center ref. BTW using ThomThom's clean up tool helps quite a bite when working the ref model you cited. BTW2 Using the arc tool out in " free space" can be difficult because it may want to inference where you don't ant it to. Drawing some plananr ref surface like a triangle some times helps me. Update 11-14-2011 Firther review seems to indicate this is from a cad file. It is almost impossible to work with it in SU because of the very dense geometry and no layer or components to speak except at the top level The arc like sections are variable and will have to be modeled with a plugin that is " adaptive" such as TIGs extrude tool set
