Selling models...how? Where?
-
Iv built up a library of models in SU from projects i put on hold, projects I lost interest in and finished projects, but iv no more use for them, I never open them anymore so now I feel it's time to part with them, so I ventured off and looked at the usual sites were assets could be sold, but and there is a but, on these model selling sites there doesn't seem to be many SU models, now this surprised me as iv seen some posts here on SCF of certin models which the modeller says I'm going to sell it on beep beep beep and beep beep beep, and there are no traces of these models in the SU search on these sites, are my missing something here, do SU models not sell, or do modellers change the format of the model to .OBj or .FBX and so on so that the model doesn't appear as a .dae which would opt out of the SU searches?
Iv never tried until now to sell my models but is there a guild to even prepare your model to sell it, for example should I change the format from .dae to another format or leave it, i would like to know how exactly I should prepare a model for selling, how should I present my model and what to are the does and donts.
Maybe someone who has sold models via model asset stores could share some tips and help others to be more prepared, like myself....

Good question - I've been wondering about this for a while as well.

DAE is your worst option.
OBJ is a good one, use TIG's free exporter, not the internal Pro one.
Shame on you if not already tried it
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=334483ds, avoid it, some limitation makes your work complicated... Though the only option for SU imports.
But, but, it's not the format the only issue.
To have all faces looking outside (normals) is crucial. I haven't found any ruby that can do the work (not having blueish faces, white only) You have to do it manually.
Another issue may be the internal faces (non manifolds), Here, another fine, difficult to find these days- ruby.
http://forums.sketchucation.com/download/file.php?id=86061SU forgives all these but with what cost... half performance on OGL when double faces are rendered.
You may find this thread (mine LOL) interesting, some things have been discussed already. You may download the tree sample (skp file) though it is imported as 3ds from blender. The only format SU can import decently

Iv used it on many occasions, fantastic plugin, iv noticed on turbosquid some models have more than 1 format, dae, 3DS, OBJ and many others, is this the way to go, convert your models to as many formats as you can before placing a model on an asset store?
And if I mention a model was created using SU does this lose customers, all SU models on turbosquid don't seem to be getting much ratings, to be honest tho the SU models don't do SU any justice either on tyrbosquid, and there are not many on display, are most SU modellers on asset stores denying that their models were created in SU?
Also featured members claim to be making a living on their assets via turbosquid and on other sites, is this really the case or just a myth?

@iichiversii
On my reply, there is a second part. This is the most important.
SU produces terrible topology sometimes. Mostly because of the bad habit lot of SU users have to not take attention on this. How could they? They don't know what they're doing, most of the time. To cut an arc opening on a rectangular base is very easy. Can you realize what bad topology this may means?
Import a SU obj in zbrush or blender. Subdivide once. Enjoy... -

Are you selling these models? I hope not...

Setting aside the fact that it would be easier to create the models yourself (factoring in the corrections you would usually need to make) don't you think that's a form of theft?

I totally agree, but bare in mind Hieru he hasn't said he's selling them, but selling models created by someone else is in my mind a form of theft, it happens, iv read on the forums some models sold are resold on other sites by the buyer, it's an issue that needs to be addreassed, google warehouse models have being found for sale also, it happens I would only sell what I create myself.

Cant sell. Models get too big. Also i never use my work for commercial use or gain.

Well that's what the Warehouse is for.
In the context of this thread you appeared to be saying that you were selling models found in the Warehouse.

I just spent the last few hrs reading your SU/BLENDER workflow, fantastic, i even tested it and i had unbelievable results, its like the missing link iv being in search for, this is simply brilliant, cheers for the workflow

Where? On SketchUp artists? If yes, it's an old one using blender 2.49b. Some things have changed, but the basic principles exist. -

But it's old now, a blender 2.49b and SU workflow.
Not many changed, just the blender UI, a little.
Why not updating it? Because I learned a lot about blender and I don't use SU much any more.
Basically I import in blender only. It's the cycles render engine, you see. And the ability to set up huge scenes using 100k trees as instances
But exporting a model to SU gives you an opportunity to easily share it with SU users. As skp. -
I once read an articale onlina about these virtual worlds like second life and Entropia Universe which have a virtual economy but in saying that they generate real money also, these worlds have the ability to import 3D models created from SU, and many members of the second life have used the warehouse to download funiture, buildings and so on to create there virtual homes, you can set up a business in these worlds selling models, for example a furniture shop, shrubs, maybe even a car sales company i think, imagine that, but now when i reserch it i find very little about selling models in these vurtual worlds, a virtual nite club sold for over $600,000.00 in real USD on Entropia Universe, and this isnt the only high selling item on these worlds, its staggering how much these worlds generate in real cash, and 3D Models are exactly what is selling here, has anyone have experience in this field?
