BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Well, last year John Bacus of (now already Trimble) said in his presentation at SketchUp BaseCamp in Boulder, Co. that the new SketchUp will be called "SketchUp 2013" so SketchUp 9 is unlikely to happen (and those screenshots seem to be a hoax too).

Well, let me know when you are around, and you'll get that beer. A promise is a promise (and, who knows, I might have more problems with SU by then)!

If the plugin is warning have not been removed I presume its because it still can cause some problems and maybe conflicts with other plugins so it is wise to follow the advice of not installing until it gets fixed. Most of the issues regarding plugins comes when modifying a global variable and not putting your code under unique module so that no other plugins gets affected. I am sure there is more reason though so if you are unsure of a plugin maybe ask in the developers forum if its safe. Also 'SketchUcation plugin store' is great place to find safe and up to date plugin and a very cool feature is to unload plugins you are not using and load them up when you do. Here is a link to that plugin.... http://sketchucation.com/resources/plugin-store-download Cheers!

Mine is not so bad on a Mac (using Simon's example). But how can we compare complexity of work? I can say that it is mostly use of plugins that can cause it and I know which ones seem to be doing heavy lifting and sometimes drop the ball so I save before these. But I can definitely get screwed sometimes. Don't get me wrong.

Well, I do not use Sensiva anymore. I replace it with Stroke-It and AutoHotkey I use a pen tablet to draw gesture holding both left and right button*. These are the gestures I use with SketchUp and AutoCAD : [image: 5Rnv_skp.jpg][image: pDSa_aCADabra.jpg] *And Here, the script for AutoHotkey : With AutoCAD and almost softs : ~RButton & LButton;; send {MButton down} Keywait LButton send {MButton up} return With Autocad and Sketchup (which uses right click differently with context menu): RButton & LButton;; send {MButton down} Keywait LButton send {MButton up} return RButton Up;; send {RButton} return It works fine ! That's another way of doing it. I'd not thought if that way. The outliner is a very useful tool in many situations.

@hellnbak said: .......... But, what I'm looking for is an explanation of why it happens, and how to make it not happen anymore. ...... Hi, attached file / model may somehow explain what is going on when creating similar weird faces. There are certain "conditions" that have to be met to create them. Don't ask me why SketchUp can't handle them. It probably has to do with the order of creating loops and the sequence of edges and their endpoints that confuses the program to decide which faces have to be created and where to split them. The model shows two situations that you better avoid when modelling. Although dragging endpoints accross an opposite edge isn't the most likely operation. Often "intersect faces with....." doesn't help. And you can keep on adding edges, only shifting the profiles to some other little face. Delete the corrupt part and/or re-create it with a workaround (like in the second scene) I hope this somehow helps in understanding when and why this issue occures. weird faces

Maybe you didn't install it correctly. I have 2D Tools on my Mac and it works perfectly.

Ouch, thanks Cotty. I guess it will be better to "explode" all of the components in that case in a final model file.

Thanks all for your responses. I ended up using Scan2CAD with very good results. I found that importing a raster image, converting it to a vector, and editing the vector was easier. [image: WI1y_OrchidCapture.PNG]

There is a issue in this with general terrain and site elements. Changes require a lot of work and the model gets fragmented and messy. Still looking for ideas myself. Some approaches may involve keeping elements separate for as long as possible. So the road is not joined to the terrain, but the terrain is shaped to accommodate it. Also valiarchitects instant terrain may help. One can add items and join it together with the main terrain. then retexturing becomes an issue....

I work on mac and I have had the same problem. Here is the trick I have found and this works for me. I extracted the file with Stuffit Expander (rather then Archive Utility, by default on Mac).... and miracle Skin Soap Buble works now, (even if I don't see any différence in the files open with Archive Utility or Stuffit Expander).

A 2d DWG/DXF puts all SKP entities [lines etc] onto Layer 0. Arc/Circles are made from lines. A 3d DWG/DXF uses the Layers that the SKP entities have: so the export does keep the same layering

First example is done by Fredoscale "Box scaling to target". You must do it one side at time. You must make a point to snap to for your one meter measurements in each direction (a meter square on the ground and on perhaps a guide vertically. Since one dimension is .6 to 1.0 and the rest are .9 to 1.0 you have to do each side. For the stairs Fredoscale could make it scale as well. It seems like these scenarios all depend on what the different parts need to do. And so a plugin can't fit to all situations. If I had a steps that needed to be larger, I would not want to change the dimension of the "lumber" parts unless I were accepting the parts would be out of scale, slightly.
