I have been dealing with a similar kind of project, so maybe these comments help you. I had a pdf document with all the contour lines. Actually some really helpful people in this forum helped me to convert the pdf into skp file (pdf => dxf => skp). Anyway, if you don't have these softwares I have found that the best way is to trace the contour lines form image file of the terrain/contours. Workflow would be: Import the image file and scale it to the right size Trace the contour lines with Catmull Spline - tool (bezierspline plugin) and using top view Put all the contours on certain layer that corresponds the height value (contour height 20m => layer: 20m) Use Edge tools or simplify contours plugins to simplify the contours if needed Use front/back view and use the move tool to put the contour lines to certain height Use Sandbox tool to create the terrain Anyway, I don't know detailed you need to be and how big is the terrain. This is the map of the project that I have been dealing with. [image: q5M5z.jpg]

@frascati said: Ok, did I finally wear out my welcome with this post? Am I so bone stupid that I'm just getting ignored? Would anyone simply try this with a single line segment in a new model and get back to me with the, no doubt, four neuron maximum instructions on what I'm doing wrong? Don't think because I didn't reply that I was ignoring you. Shortly after my last post I got in the car to make the drive to my father's house. Since the OM won't be needing a house anymore, we gotta get busy cleaning it out so we can sell it. As I already wrote, if you don't stop on the second endpoint and you don't make the second click, it won't offer to scale. When you enter the distance it'll put the guide point out there.

Off Topic : FYI, for the benefit of anyone else struggling with a large background model, such as an urban area, here's a tip I learned the hard way. The urban model in its own separate file was 6MB. After exploding most components in order to change the face material (manually & locally, as it turns out) the file size ballooned up to 11.5MB. When added to my own building model that produced a filesize apparently too large for my system to handle. So I exported the urban model from SU8 to 3DS format. That step reduced the file size back down to 2.3MB. Unfortunately, it also undid most of my laborious material changes. So, next time I'll export the complex background to 3DS before I attempt to make material changes. PS---The Global Material Changer script still didn't work on the 3DS file. Instead it caused a lockup & shut-down. Maybe even the reduced total file size is just too big for my system. 4MB of physical memory (plus 256MB of graphics card memory) should be enough for most SU models. But I noticed that my Task Manager showed almost no Virtual Memory in use, even when the CPU was maxed-out. The system Page File is set for Windows to automatically adjust to memory demands. But it doesn't seem to be taking much of the load off the physical memory.

Well, for a "so called" professional modeller it may be worth using these models/styles/materials whatnot... You can always keep it in your final product like renders, animations etc. that you have already "sold" to the clients. And do not forget that most (well, "all") of these models are very high quality. As low poly as possible without to much visual compromise, all faces are correctly oriented, no "litter geometry" inside and all those nuances that make a huge difference between these and an average Warehouse model where you must start with cleaning up first and if it is a really crappy model, you may spend more time on it than if you started from scratch. And a "professional" modeller is professional because he is modelling for money - and time is money. So all in all, there is a circle of modellers to whom it may be worth this subscription system. (And let's not scold FF too much as we have a bunch of nice people here who are also FF artists)

Ya, Soluto is quite nice. They came out with an update recently and added some new features. Originally the idea was to speed up your boot time by helping you chose programs that didn't need to start up at boot time. Now they've added a new feature which keeps track of your program crashes and eventually as it develops, may help you to fix them. The hope is that it will be what the normal windows crash reports should be (something that helps you fix the issue, rather than just a log that gets sent off somewhere). It also has a new feature to help speed up your browser but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. At any rate, it's a great software. One of those rare ones like dropbox, that just does what it does, but does it very well. -Brodie

I did not mean the unit (that should not matter even if you change it on the fly while modelling) but the scale. If you use the Tape Measure tool to measure a side of the building, what do you get? (I also model in centimetres)

Hi Greg, I am afraid it will be extremely difficult to achieve an output that size which resembles what you can see on screen. Sketchy edges are made up of raster images and adjust themselves to screen resolution (or what the heck). Read a very good explanation here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=968

There are several existing scripts that read in 'text files' and parse the 'fields/parts' line-by-line into an array of values [e.g. separated by space/tab/,/;/etc] to use in making geometry of some sort from these as x/y/z/material/layer/etc ... Find these and see how it's done...
