There are some plugins to make roofs. Of course doing it manually will give you more control but then a plugin might make your life easier. Instant Roof http://www.valiarchitects.com/sketchup_scripts/instant-roof 1001bit Tools (there is a free and pro version) https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/1001bit-tools-freeware These are the 2 that comes to mind for me. There's probably more solutions.

If there is one problem that Sketchup has as a truly viable software package it's that you have to find work-arounds for it's buggy weirdness. For more complex models using spline cages etc. I use MODO for it's brilliant sub-d integration, relatively low cost (compared to other "big" packages), and it has the best interface of any advanced 3D package. But that's a different discussion... -If you can't "see" your geometry or things disappear, it's probably because the scale of the model is small and so when you try to do certain operations SU just makes the really small pieces disappear as if being unrecognizable. The easiest way to deal with the small geometry SU problem is to use the "boolean helper" plugin which really only does two things: it scales up and it scales back down again. Of course you can do this manually, but it's nice to have easy to use buttons that just do it for you. -To get around camera clipping turn your perspective on (which will unset the clipping), then do a couple of operations, then turn perspective off again (if you don't like perspective on). I always have to do this periodically. So without being able to see what your model is specifically, here is what I would recommend: It sounds like you trying to build spline cages for skinning. For this type of operation SU isn't ideal, especially for complex models, but you can do it. First, don't try to skin the whole model in one go. Do it in pieces. In fact I would take pieces of the model and copy them into separate files, then after getting each piece to work, copy and paste the whole model and put it together. - I think SU gets confused when dealing with large groups of complex geometry and performing operations that it's not necessarily good at, but it seems to do better when dealing with smaller compact units and them putting them together. By separating these pieces you might also find where the real problems are.

To reiterate the previous two posts... You could probably make that with far fewer facets without losing anything in the appearance. Your faulty object is probably quite small... There is a well know limitation in SketchUp... SketchUp cannot create very tiny faces. Its tolerance is ~1/1000th" - so if you have a small facet with one or more very short edges it will assume that the start and end points of the tiny edges are coincident and so it will not add the edge. Consequently the face[s] relying on each tiny unmade edge will not get created either. Scale up your object x100 [or more], perform the operation and there should now be no overly small edges, so the facets will be made as hoped. Scale down x0.01, the then tiny facets will be kept because although small edges cannot be made they can exist ! You need to be aware of the size limitation and scaling 'trick' when using several native operations - like FollowMe - and any Plugins which do operations which could give tiny geometry in their outputs. Humongous geometry can also have similar issues, but that is rarer

You should have updated the information on your OS from the beginning then. You think updating viewports in LayOut is "clunky" but exporting new images and replacing the old ones isn't? Wow!

Thanks for the info. I got to play with the pro version for 8 hours when I installed SU earlier this week, but I spent it learning dynamic components. Those are really awesome, but I only use SU for personal work, and can't quite justify the $600 for the pro version. (Especially since Autodesk Inventor is only like $700.)

Sorry for not responding sooner. In this particular case, it turned out that I had to go to the Control Panel and uninstall it as a program. I had sent the message because I could not find the plugin in the Plugins folder and though maybe I was missing something. I always appreciate a response.

You decide Pilou. The HDRI is an afternoon shot so perhaps we'll go with that! This scene took less than 5 minutes to set up ad has less than 100 faces in total.

I've been a away for a few days... I also noted that the tree/plants etc were well CAD layered, so you could turn them off in the model to drape just the road lines etc... Glad it finally worked

You guys are great. Thanks everyone, seriously. Yea, I know about changing colors in the Style menù, but not every object in the 3D-2D view is all black, sometimes there are some primary colors. So I have to put them on AI...
