How can a 3D Text object be moved like a normal object?

3D text is a normal object and as such moves they same as anything else.
But I'm guessing from you elaborated description of your problem that the text you want to move is glued to a face. If you place 3D text on a face it has glueing properties so it sticks to whatever you put it on.
Right click on it and select unglue and you should be able to move it anywhere.
