OK, I've now got the Subdevide-Smooth tools. It will take me a little while to learn the moves, but this is real progress. Once I get closer to a final model for Stonehenge, I'll start a new thread to let you know how it's going. Thanks to you all for your help. Solo, Isn't it the middle of the night in Dallas? Tom

as far as I know they enable you to determine the inner side or outer side of a shape. just imagine you have a cube. how is the computer supposed to know, what is inside and what is outside? some years ago everyone in europe believed earth to be the centre of the world until a smart guy called Kopernikus found some convincing arguments that the sun is much more centered than our small blue planet. two sided faces are our arguments to define the orientation of a shape. for basic SketchUp use this is not that important. but if you start rendering a scene it is essential. if you have a glass object for example, light will change its colour depending on the distance it travels through the material [image: QboE_pure01.jpg] (picture by http://www.purerender.com) therefore the render engine needs to calculate the thickness of the object. and it can only do that if it is told what the inside of the object is and what the outside.

If you are not familiar with ruby scripting, don't bother with the ruby console (actually it's under the Window menu). It is used for entering special scripts there but who does not know what to enter, should practically leave it alone... There are "ready to use" ruby scripts (plugins) made by scripters and they add fantastic extra abilities to SU. Normally they are just plain text files with an *.rb extension which you need to download into the Plugins folder of your SU application. They appear in various menu items (although many of them are only in the "Plugins menu". Visit or Ruby Forum somewhere at the bottom-ish of the Board Index to see a bunch of them.

Yeah, Remus has said most of the main things. Also, yes, a nice "thingie" (whatever it is). You may also try to right click on a white face and select "Orient faces". In simple models it tends to work. If it messes up your model more than it was, undo and do what Remus said; select the blue faces and reverse them.

@remus said: wow, 96 hours is a long time I cant help but wonder what the hell SU was doing all that time... Probably dropped by the local Corner Bar for a couple of drinks in the meanwhile... Anyway, impressive for sure. Now comes the modeling (and stamping) part!

@remus said: If you make the geometry a group/component and then apply a material to the group (without entering it) it should colour the back faces as well, is that the sort of thing you meant? That works. Good trick. At least it works if the entire component is one color.

thanks for the reply. what seems to have worked for now is turning the 'anti-aliasing mode' in the NVIDIA advanced settings from 'application controlled' to 'off'. whether or not this negatively affects other programs is yet to be seen. jill

If you are good with photoshop or other image-editing software there is a way to have lines & no-lines parts in the same final image. It involves combining two images into one. Separate out the parts of your model you want to have with lines using a group or layer. Temporarily hide that part and export a view without lines. Then unhide it but hide everything else and export with your lines turned on. Then combine the two images in the other software. This approach works with different styles too. Another tip is to set a scene tab when you have the view you like because it will be important that both exports be from the same 'camera' position. It doesn't work so well if your two views don't match!

@kwistenbiebel said: And now if someone would make a user interface for this with all the needed rubies, we have the 'architectural plugin' we talked about. (maybe with some extra stuff included?) It would take one of the ruby heroes to make a GUI for it.... Yes Please, that would be awesome!!!

@unknownuser said: Also in addition to pavs answer, you can use the rotate function, but if you keep your left mouse pressed down once you choose a point of rotation and move the mouse, you can lock onto one of the other axis. yeah thats probably easier as it goes, always nice to have a component or two in the library though. he he pav
