    Hello. πŸ™‚ New here.

Absolutely torn to pieces on an issue. On more issues, really. Took me too long to come here, half because encountering problems in SketchUp demotivated me. But now then! To construct hulls - one of several pains.

I want to create, as seen by this simplistic model, say a boat hull. The port side will show rectangular approaches, while the starboard side should show my best guesses as to how to start creating a hull. Now, do not mind the fact that the approach is simplistic. What I care the most about is how to make the middle section create a 'wall' (ideally infinite-edged, so as to be smooth).

The two curves that go perpendicular to the length of the hull, are to create a wall between them. This would complete the mid-section of the hull. However, I can only find that I can use the incremental edges, and putting lines between these to create a rather disgusting look. This is shown by the three uppermost such panels.

There is also the issue about creating the same effect for the aft and the fore. For the aft, the program would have to work out an average function (which raises the question if the program can be made to use a user-made function with regards to spread). Ditto for the fore; at a higher height, the hull would curve differently than it would when the value of z drew closer to zero.

I will be very thankful for any help. If I need elaborate on anything, clarify or similar, simply say so.

Ok, well i reckon the easiest way to get a smoother hull would be to use more segments in your arc. To do this you jsut have to select the arc tool and then before you do anything else, type in the number of segmwnts you want, i think the default is 12, which as you say gives a nasty look. If you whack it up to 48 that should give you a much cleaner look.

To save a lot of time after that you can then use the push/pull tool to pull the face along. This will be much faster than filling in faces.

Im not entirely sure what you want to achieve with the fore and aft of the hull, but (on a completey side tracked note) id recomend havign a look at the soap skin bubble plugin, its very good for boat hulls and can create soem otherwise very challenging shapes.

Feel free to ask questions, the worst thing to do is get frustrated by not being able to do something πŸ˜„

        Hello and welcome "aboard"! πŸ˜‰

First of all, I'd use bezier curves for your hull. most (if not all) boat hulls are even much more complex than just a kind of cylindrical shape.

In this topic , Burkhard has posted a couple of links to further discussions and videos. Have a look (that's the German forim but the links still work πŸ˜„ ).

Hi Greyhead, and all that replied!
Nice picture, Grey. Unfortunately, the link only leads me to a purely blank page! ❓
Gaius, I will most certainly take a look at some of those links.
And, remus, I will try that plugin. πŸ˜„

If you want to create a hull to use in a model then I'd seriously suggest that you look at the free hull modeller DelftShip . You can create a hull there and re-import it into SketchUp to build on.

Later: fixed link to http://www.delftship.net (not .com)

DelftShip half hull assembled in SU and rendered in Kerkythea.
