you got an old version update to lastest and then leave the opacity 100% and tick "use color texture for transparency" in the diffuse slot, that's it. for proper shadow apply the png on both positive and negative faces.

I stand corrected. Interesting. Has anyone tried either of these?

U think you should purge your model and then your layers, move it all on 1. Well it kinda helps.. : )

Ok let’s start with the native SU before we get onto the VRay.

    Couple of things:

You need to pay attention to the front and back faces. (front – white , back – blue).
VRay materials should only go on the front faces. The front faces are for external surfaces so with a brick wall for example, the outside (the bit you see) should be white and the internal (the bit you don’t) should be blue. http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=115427
Your model needs to be all white inside the church. The attached file (stage feb 24 edit Monochrome.jpg) shows what faces need to be changed.

You need to keep up with purging the unused materials, components and styles. I ran a purge and the attached file (Purge.jpg) shows how much unused stuff was in it. The files is greatly affected, the file you sent was 20mb and the purged file is 4mb.
    Purge.jpg

    On to the projectors screens:

The reason they weren’t working is because they had been applied to ‘back faces’. I have attached some file that should help explain it.

This image show that on is not working but the other is. (Screen 1.jpg), the corresponding SU export shows the one not working is applied to a blue face. (Monochrome 1.jpg)
    Screen 1.jpg
    monochrome 1.jpg

As you can see in (screens.jpg) they are both working and the SU export shows that they are both front faces (monochrome 2.jpg)

    monochrome 2.jpg

I have attached the reduced file as well as the packed material.

    Hope that helps.

I bet you could achieve this effect by rendering a small portion of the modeled material and take than alpha mask and use that as a glossiness map in refraction? Quite the challenge.

Well I'm not really sure on a Vray setting side, but in Photography the way to fix that would be by doing 2 or more exposures, one for proper interior lighting and one for proper exposure of the window and then combine them in photoshop or other HDR program.

    Thanks for the tips guys.
I couldn't (and can't) post an image of the final result, since there's some secretkeeping of the design involved for now. Perhaps in a few months.
Anyway, the biggest problem in this story was mainly the guy who commissioned it didn't quite know what he wanted and inadvertently took it out on me, telling me every time I had rendered something, that it looked wrong.
Finally we settled for using a really plain, modelled plank, just plain colour and a simple groove.

Thanks for the link Valerostudio, to that arroway thingy. I'm sure it will be useful in a later project 😄 I knew the site of course, but I just found out this time around that they have downloadable samples. Quite a handy thing, especially with the people I work with... always changing their minds...

As to the creating of bump maps etcetera; I'm quite adept at that already, but it's a nice video to watch nonetheless. Always a pleasure to see someone working at something they're good at. ☀

    Hello
    thanks for responding.
I didn't have the time to work it out so I used ies lighting instead.

A cheat if you just need color is to put the color directly on the refraction. you won't get the SSS effect but on box this may not matter much.

If you are loading a vispot from the internet, I would say thats the culprit. You should stay away from these things because some are from the older 1.05.30 version and there are lots of changes between the 2 versions and will cause errors.

    Try this

Make modeling in mm scale. When you add light in VRAY option increase power to 1000 of the IES file.

OMG! Thanks so much for this info, it was such a simple fix, my IES lights are showing now. Thanks!

    FIXED!

I guess I deleted the plant while batch render was in progress. I just had to stop the rendering process, delete it again, purge unused materials, save and close. When I re-opened the model and did a test render, the plant was gone... hopefully forever.

Thanks anyway... hope this can still be helpful for someone 😄

    Thanks,

    Ed

oh and regarding the spheres. my approach would be to increase the number of segments when creating your sphere - providing a smoother surface. an arc with about 48 segments is what i generally use for a fairly adequate smooth surface. hope that helps!

    It's called the "terminator" problem

@ATLAStudio - good info, thanks! For me, I just keep re-loading a working water vismat, so I didn't remember off-hand which setting it was...
