BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@unknownuser said: There are many commands that are only available in 'certain circumstances'... For example to shortcut 'Reverse Face' - if nothing were selected then there's nothing for Preferences > Shortcuts... even with a Filter for 'Reverse'... But, if you first Select a Face, then do Preferences > Shortcuts > Filter 'Reverse' will give you the command [hooray] - set it to say Shift+Q... While you are at it why not set 'Orient' to Alt+Q ? So... if there are commands you'd like to shortcut to then first ensure that the 'context' is set properly before activating Preferences to attempt the Shortcutting... I did think I had the basic context thing in mind. I'm still not with the filter, but will try o keep it in mind. And I will now go in search of prefab shortcut selections, as I know folks with good experience have put them together, acknowledging that one size won't fit all, and that whatever is implemented must be remembered to be a short cut.

I haven't had any luck either and end up just giving up trying. From what I hear, the new Connectivity Extension in Max 2010 will import SU cameras and Max 2011 will do it natively.

@Al Hart This is not about the mechanics but the role of advertising in relation to Google's stated philosophy and my own proposed method of working. This was discussed at some length in the topic around Solo's post but wandered off into usual wishlist stuff. My discovery of Google's Interior on line in my view reinforces what I wrote then and perhaps it is time to revisit the subject. All this has a bearing on the development of the technical aspects of Sketchup. Thanks

@anssi said: all the documentation should "automatically" update fwiw, this is exactly what Solidworks also does- but for engineering. Create an assembly, change something, then a huge box appears with a massive list of errors, and "you really didn't want to do that" pop-up windows!!

Thanks, ThomThom: Your reply is sufficient. I should have realized the materials thing being related to the default component geometry. (Apparently, all 3d programs insert a default object?) It seems that the validity check was automatic when there was a problem earlier on in my modeling "career". Not that it can't happen again, and again, and again.

Hi HL, Thanks for your response. Interesting plugins. The Smustard one looks promising, assuming that a jpeg at 2048 x 1307 px prints better at A4 than the equivalent view rendered in LayOut (Hybrid or Vector if possible) and then Exported to PDF. And that is my main question: jpeg export straight out of SU, or use LO and export to PDF... I suppose it depends on the final destination of the image (jpeg or PDF)...

You can also smooth the mesh surface first then drape the terrain shape on it triple click anywhere with the select tool double click in the middle with the Shift key pressed (to deselect the middle part) and hit the Delete button You can unsoften you mesh later - or leave it like that (you would probably soften it eventually anyway) as the other sandbox tools work on smooth surfaces, too - or you can display hidden geometry any time from the View menu.

Scott, have you already tried with Fredo's tools on surface plugin? It have a free hand tool in wich you can set the sensitivity (number of pixels, from 5 to 200, in length of a single segment) of your line.

Hi Wim, I guess there would not be any problem with translating them but of course it would show some courtesy to ask the authors first. I sent you a Private Message about this, check your inbox.

Could you bring the text in as a texture (high res .jpeg) to a rectangle with hidden edges, then print?

I haven't personally used the slicer feature. My friend is basically done with the hull, from what I hear, but is looking to convert it to 3DS to get it into another program he's using. Ryan
