Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@thomthom said: I'd separate the ground by itself, would i do that by drawing a large rectangle and then making that rectangle a component? then I can start building on top of it? @thomthom said: draw a rectangle on the wall-face, select the face and it's edges (doubleclick) and then "Make Component". Then in the dialog you get ensure that "Replace Selection" is checked as well as cut opening. so after I draw the window, do I cut out the opening and then make it a component? thank you all for the info. I will definitely start to use components.

Hi folks. After drawing the arc, add a line between the two end, creating a face. Pull the face as required. Delete two straight lines and you are left with a curved surface. However, this is a face without any thickness. If you need thickness, use some of the methods proposed in this thread. Just ideas.

I've now got it. Thanks TIG (and additional gratitude/ kudos for you ruby plugins and contributions). Thanks also J Bacus, Gaieus. For some reason, it's been a bit af a learning curve - I'm probably still dumb, but less ignorant thanks to you all and the forum! TIG, the process you describe was pretty much the way I went about my first attempt. The breakthrough came when I read John Bacus' comment aand realised that by zooming in close I could improve the image quality, and that the new "Add more imagery" system allows me to quilt together a terrain. I work mostly with golf holes and imagery needs to be long and thin, so with a single image in SU7, the orientation was important. In SU8 this is no longer true. BTW Gaieus, thanks for your suggestion for SU7, I had tried it but had more reliable results for the GTS method. But hopefully, its one for the history books.

Hi Andy, I think it´s possible: right click - entity info - uncheck "cast shadow" box.

The problem with simply hiding them is that the connecting face can also bleed through. nr, under the OpenGL settings, is there any better antialias setting? Not as if any could do wonders with this (from a distance, they would bleed through even with a roof thickness) just asking...

They are concentric. They were grouped, which must have been why they didn't snap. Thanks for the workarounds. Jim

Hi Thomas, One solution I used to make a material map (same issue - I needed to cover a wall with ivy but didn't want all the additional polys for vray.) First, I took a leaf component from an ivy model I had (17,000 faces with just one component!) - then used component spray on a rectangle in an empty model. I added and deleted leaves until it looked how I wanted to to look in my full model. I set up a view straight on, and with the right sun angle, did a vray render. As a result, I have a png (with transparency) that I can use as a material map in vray (I also made a bumpmap layer with a b/w version of the image.) Like Csaba suggests, I place it at a distance from the backdrop so it casts shadows. Here is an example in a rendering. [image: penthouse_img31crop.jpg] -Andy

Does it mean it worked? (I was actually just stabbing in the dark a bit - only relying on experience but without the file itself, I could not be sure...)

My master's degree will be in Urban Planning with a specialization in urban design. I live and want to stay in Buffalo - a great city with no job growth hopefully those who hold public office can get their acts together and realize that some peoples' hopes of returning to a great industrial manufacturing city are dreams we would be chasing forever and never achieving.

@anirudh said: jim, its a part of my research. i am trying to understand other gestures that could help sketchup in future. thats why. center could be 0,0 or arbitrary . I want to be able to draw using keyboard shortcuts. any ideas? learn ruby then. i don't know it but i'm pretty sure what you're trying to accomplish should be relatively easy to do.. that said, what you're trying to accomplish (at least the examples in the op) is very easy with sketchup itself but hey, i won't try to talk you out of your quest

Thanks Gaieus, got it. @gaieus said: Hi Andy, Create a 3rd layer for the top face of the ground floor walls. Now open that group, double click on the top face and copy it on the clipboard (Ctrl+C). While that top face+its bounding edges are still selected, right click and hide. Now close the group and paste the copied top face in place (Edit menu). Make it a group, too, and set the visibility to be ONLY visible in Scene 1 (with groundfloor) while hidden in Scene 2 (with second floor, too). Now open the second floor group, too, double click on its bottom face and hide that, too. See attached file for ideas...

@tig said: [ensure you haven't got adjusted axes by right-click over them and 'reset'] Oh crap !!!! That never occurred to me. That's because I are a noobie. Couldn't figure out how I could have moved and rotated the entire model "accidentally". Of course I also can't figure out how I managed to "accidentally" adjust the axes, but doing that would have been much easier to do. I normally turn off the axes unless I need them for something, guess I should stop doing that so I could maybe notice sooner if I screw them up again somehow. I was anticipating having to redo all the changes, and all it took was two clicks of my mouse Anyhow, that fixed it, all better now (picture here a smiley doing cartwheels, and fireworks, and smiling till his face splits in two). Thanks a million (the check is in the mail, really!) I know, way too many smilie thingies , but hey, they're cheap and you've made me so happy with your words of wisdom.

This is a very easy tool to use. Just select a face and do the inputs. The face can be any number of sides. Not sure where I got this plugin, but you should be able to Google and find it on some site. Copyright 2004, Rick Wilson Name : helix.rb 1.0

I don't do much interior work, mostly exteriors, but here are my thoughts. camera setup - Use the 2-point perspective camera to make all of the vertical lines vertical. Spend a lot of time perfecting your camera setup using all of the tools available to you (field of view, aspect ratio, etc.) high detail - with interiors, detail is REALLY important. make sure you're using fairly high polygon models (you can't go crazy but SU can actually handle more polygons than most people think). Use Fredo's RoundCorner plugin (http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=10370) to bevel all of your hard edges. This makes a huge difference and really separates novice from professional work. materials - I don't know how much control over materials you have in IDX but with simple materials you'll always end up with fairly uninteresting results. To get an image to 'pop' you really need variation in bump, reflection, etc. Also small things like subtle dirt in corners and slight color variation even in things like painted walls will add realism. As was mentioned earlier, don't be afraid to use photoshop to help with some of things things. -Brodie
