    • Old pro license

Hi, I used to use sketchup daily for drawing exhibitions, I changed my job around 2014/5 and have only picked up sketchup sparingly since. At the time my license was around £4/500 and was Mac specific, I think Trimble had recently bought SU from google.

A friend wants to do some drawings, I’ve said he can borrow my computer as I assume it will still work just be out of date. Will this work or will I get prompted to upgrade to the subscription model?

Have there been any major changes in how it functions? Assume not as that was the selling point. The free online version might well suffice but I’m unaware of its limitations as never used it.

Whilst I’m here is there a sketchucation type forum for Cinema4D might have a look as it’s more suited to my current work.

      Thanks for any advice

    • Updating SU

Hi I'm always dropping in and out of using SU, I currently have the 2015 pro version when I click update it wants me to download the program again is that correct?

Also I have the SU pro for Mac am I able to swap the licence to Windows? I don't mean swap between the two I mean completely swap, or would I have to pay again.

      Thanks Andy

    • Processor based software?

Sketchup I think uses the processor to do its thing, are most design packages (adobe, 3ds, vray) processor based or do any of them use the multi cores ?

Reason - I'm thinking of buying a new mac or possibly PC.

      Thanks Andy

    • Draftsight

      Hi guys,

In the past I used to use AutoCAD in conjunction with SU, I'd export my SU drawings as DWGs and import them into AC etc.

I used to have these nice titleblocks all set up for paper sizes A3 to A0, you could click in them and change the attributes like scale and drawing name etc.

I never actually made these title blocks they were just there. Does anyone know how to set up something similar in Draftsight? The draftsight forum seems a bit under used.

      Thanks Andy

    • Vectorworks

I'll try to keep it brief.

I've recently started designing exhibitions at a local company. The other designers are using Vectorworks which I think is a bit slow, but it produces better orthographic plans than SU. We would like to work under a system where all designers are using the same software.

When they design in VW it produces a 2d and 3d model at the same time, which in theory is a good thing plus I would get to learn a new program. My nagging doubt is that I can draw a 3d model in SU and a 2d drawing in AC quicker than VW does it's thing.

Add to that all the plugins available for SU, I think we should be using VW for 2d and SU for 3d.

Are there any VW users on here that can advise?

      Thanks

    • What computer for SU?

I'm sure this question has been done a few times.

I'm running SU on my mac mini fairly well 2.3Ghz i7, 4Gb RAM, intel hd graphics 4000. Where as the Core2duo, 2Gb RAM imac I run at work is awful. They will upgrade at work hopefully soon.

Does SU use the video card a lot in which case I'll ask them to get a high spec imac with Nvidia GeForce graphics or will I be fine with the RAM maxed out on a macmini.

I basically model in SU with bits of CAD plus emails, internet, etc. It has to be a mac as the SU license's are apple specific.
