BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Hi, for your information the plugin SU2XL works on previous versions of SketchUp (from SU08 till SU2017). You can download it on the Extension Warenhouse: https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/su2xl-0 or on the http://www.wisext.com site: http://www.wisext.com (a windows installer is available to install easily the tool).

3D Warehouse was down because of issues with the Amazon Web Services but should be back after restarting now: https://status.sketchup.com/

If your terrain is clean and connected, and softened-smoothed to one surface, With hidden geometry showing project image onto one face (or set the current face material to projected). Sample that face. Then with hidden geometry off, paint the whole surface. Or did you try this?

@bep said: Yes it is a so-cold sloppy Cad drawing. Use the plugin "flatten to plane" to get all geometry flat on the working plane. Use "edge tools" plugin to find and repair as many as possible small errors. Use the "make faces" plugin to make faces. Use the plugin "Cleanup" to get rid of all useless geometry. I would add do some manual clean up either before or upon import of CAD, you don't need some edges (crossing over multiple surfaces, not ending on another edge etc. ) that do not really represent or delineate 3d shapes and appear to be remnants of 2d drawing. Do this before you try to make faces.

Thank you for your help, Pilou! Bob @pilou said: Just a precision about the Toposhaper method above! I erase all surfaces and keep only contours ! Will be more precise of course if you have some real level's curves! (iso contours)

@sketch3d.de said: What is the decimal separator of a Spanish keypad and what is shown in SU if using it? Hello sketch3d.de, What is printed on the number keypad is a dot. It shows as a dot in SU. Typing it in something like Notepad also shows as a dot. I've installed the germal keyboard layout to test and it does type a comma. I also happen to have a german stand alone number pad and it has a comma printed on the key. It seems to me that historically the German number pad decimal key is a comma, which coincides with the decimal separator set in the operating system. I now realise my problem is not with Sketchup but with the system.

Hi Dave Yea, I try to avoid exploding groups and components as much as possible, but I have a devil of a time keeping complex groups "solid" as I manipulate them. Irregular shapes and all that I use to cut one group against another. Been burning my brain lately... Thanks. Maybe you can help out with my next post! @dave r said: That is a weird thing about layers when you explode groups or component. It can be leveraged when you're using nested components/groups but with raw geometry it's a bugger. TIG's plugin can help but one thing I've found useful is after exploding a bottom level group, all of its geometry will be highlighted. Immediately correct the layer association in Entity Info and you won't have a problem. To be honest, I rarely if ever have a need to explode a component after I've created it so this is rarely an issue for me, anyway.

SketchUp will remake those folders if they turn up missing. That's another reason why you have to make your own with different names.

Hi unearthed, sorry for the slow response (seems my original reply dissapeared). Our new online solution (AutoTURN Online) will offer SketchUp users the solution you mention. Besides a yearly subscription you can also choose for a 1 month subscription, that could save single time users a lot of money. The cost will depend on your region and ´vehicle libraries´ used. For 1 month use with 1 vehicle library the pricing would be in the range of $70-$120. It was officially launched last week and should provide a swept path solution for SketchUp users. We do not yet support all regions but we do support yours (NZ). You can currently test it for free before your purchase at http://www.autoturnonline.com

Really useful piece of software! Images are very good and the instant building volumes are really helpful. However, the feature I like the most is the sync between your model and google street view, that the plugin is able to pull off. It allows you to create a photomatch of your model using what you see in Streetview as a background with a single click and redo it for a new position of the model with a second click. Amazing "little" feature that can quickly help you turn a simple building block into a very detailed model, useful on a lot of scenarios. Congratulations Whaat!

Have you (or them) tried the 'Import SKP' plugin for AutoCAD based products? Looks like you have to save your SKP file down to a r2013 format, I think. I have it and have used it several times with no issues.

@tuna1957 said: Walt, No worries. I can relate to the over the head comment. It's where I spend most of my time. It doesn't help that I didn't explain the problem and how to correct it very well. Going to try to clarify it a little better, I hope ! You need to edit the texture that is not rendering properly outside of SU in Photo Shop or Gimp. You change the color mode from "indexed" to "RGB" in the photo editor and then load back into the SU model and then it should render the correct color/texture. I did not know that. I have heard about color being the proper mode, but not the specific problem.

@utiler said: And just tried a new model with nothing in it.... Can't find the red axis. Just tested a model similar to the one in your file, feb 13. With the camera position you presented I could find R, G and B axes in FOV less than 10 deg upto 120 degrees. No problem here. The blind spot that seems to only appear on my laptop decreases with a larger FOV. Weird.
