Being an old metal building detailer I would also love to see something like this developed but I think the variables would be endless. My best solution would be to create say a I-Beam column as a dynamic component with the variables you need it to have like size, pitch, plates, and things of that nature. I may be way off track on what you were talking about if so I'm sorry.

There are several possibilities why you might be getting Bug Splats. SU8 doesn't support Win10 and it is not uncommon to hear that users have issues. You don't say what your graphics card is but many Bug Splats occur because of deficiencies in the way the GPU drivers handle (or don't handle) OpenGL. You don't say whether you installed 64-bit SU2016 or not but some GPU drivers don't provide good 64-bit OpenGL support. There have been many reports of problems due to this but users have found switching to 32-bit SketchUp 2016 has gotten around it. Perhaps you'll have better results if you update the GPU drivers or perhaps you need to replace the graphics card. Are you sending in Bug Splats with your e-mail and a description of what you were doing when it occurred. As a current SU2016 Pro user, you could contact Customer support and they should be able to give you a clue about what is causing the splats.

Ah, stupid me, yes, certainly PhotoMatch was an addition in v. 6 and I completely forgot. And yes, those specs are quite enough for SU.

@unknownuser said: Can't you set how many threads Twilight uses so you've resources for both? But if you've already started then it's too late... Yes, that too. Although s he says it's a complicated model with progressive rendering so I guess it will take long so pausing for a little bit and then let it cook at top speed overnight seems to be more economical. If I had 8 cores, I may have thought about that solution. I have a dual core only however.

Okay then, in V-ray, you can set a material double sided (somehow, do not ask me as I do not use V-ray but down in the V-ray subforum on the board index). This means that while a face can be completely transparent from one side, can be a shadow caster material from the other - i.e. if you create a dummy, shadow caster face for a 2D component, it will result in a "normal" shadow from any angle. This is actually very useful in SU as well. See an example file by Alan Fraser here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=173618#p173618 Although it is not a "classical" 2D face me component, its leaves are actually face me pieces. If you turn hidden geometry on, you will notice what casts the shadow there. You can use that shadow caster component (maybe a bit slanted towards the camera so that you can never see "underneath") with a transparent material on top and a non-transparent, shadow casting material at the bottom in V-ray.

i think you can try also to use the image as a glass texture then edit the opacity to 50%... just make sure that you map it properly

If it has the same name then the original version isn't overwritten by 'import'. BUT you can 'Reload' it simply by selecting a placed instance [or it's icon in the model tab of the Component Browser] and select that right-click menu item; if it's not the the same folder as it was originally you'll have to navigate to it... A 'Reload' will then update all instances of the originally imported component with the current version in the external SKP file...

In 8 your toolbar positions are saved. So if your resize your window it will go crazy as usual. But when you return to it's original size there is a command to restore toolbars. LAA means that if your use 64bit OS SU can utilise more ram. So those long number crunching waits are reduced. Not quite sure how much ram but there is an article in our Webmag CatchUp that explains it. It was actually written by Twilight Guru Fletch. Edit It's 4gb on 64bit. Up to 3gb on 32bit but that needs some tweaking to happen.

@unknownuser said: You can use FredoScale to view the dimensions. Select a part of the model, then choose the Scale tool. If you mouseover the corners of the bounding box, you get the dimensions displayed in the status bar. Fredo I didn't know that...how neat! The display changes according to which grip you mouseover, thanks Fredo.
