If you paint a component with a material, all the faces inside that component which has Default material will inherit the components material. A very handy feature. It means you can model a car, leave the body with Default material, and add all the rest - like tires, lights etc. Then when you place instances of that car component you can paint each instance with a different colour and the car body will reflect that. I'm guessing this is what you are referring to. Maybe a sample model, just to be sure we are talking about the same thing?

Whoo cannt spel hear?

after doing some tests we ran into an odd problem. after selecting Components>>Nearby Models we choose one model and are able to download that one. then we select a second one and after downloading it all we get is the 1st one over and over. however, this does not happen with all locations. with some it does with others it does not. any ideas?

@ nics: Regarding the empty back face on the door frame, this may be a similar effect of the PushPull tool. You can simply trace with the pencil tool one of the edges of the missing face and it should fill in. If it does not, then you can draw a diagonal across the open area. This should cause the face to fill, but will not guarantee that the face is a single plane. If it is a single plane, you can erase the diagonal and the face will remain. Also, sometimes there are unseen endpoints along what appears to be one straight segment. You will need to "connect all the dots" to close the face. In most cases a face will not fill if the edges are not completely on the same plane. Sometimes Sketchup seems not to notice whether all edges can form a plane. This is due to some ambiguity in the workings of the program "behind the curtains".

Sorry David I will only find out if they are cropped if I try to photomatch them. I am not technically competent in photography and the image was emailed to me by a client - from a website download. I have modelled it by guesstimating the dimensions. I plan to make a similar bed for the client and she wanted it as close as possible to the image. It was my first attempt at photomatch and I was getting very frustrated at not being able to achieve a good vertical line position when my horizon points were very accurately positioned. Thus the request for help. I have reread your original post on the topic and I just cant match what you are saying to what you have done in the images with the lines. Sorry for not being able to understand this thus my request for further direction on learning more about the subject. Thanks for the reply.

Hummmm I was sort of hoping that someone might have a script (ruby or otherwise) that would shut the darn thing off. You're right. It's about 95% crap. I knew that when Google purchased SU, that it would loose some class. I mean, for god's sake, I've now got smiling laughing utterly ridiculous icons dancing on this page. Maybe that's okay if you're modeling for the kiddie sandbox. It's way I stopped visiting the forums, stopped, just about everything related to Google.

Search for a similar thread - where I showed how to use a completely transparent png as a texture for the material on all faces - you then also hide the edges in the object [group/component] and then you can't see it at all, but it casts a shadow...

The original post was to consider industries, but how about polling cross industry uses? Design, reconstruction, modeling, entertainment, or production to begin with. Given the most popular use of SU promoted by Google, reconstruction would probably be its predominant use. Lucky for us minority users.

I am not aware of any unit selection involving acres. Probably some script could be written. Maybe check TIG's arsenal of scripts. Or see in Smustard, or Ruby Library Depot.

There are some rendering applications that can export an alpha mask (white for the rendered objects and black for the background). Have a look at Kerkythea for instance (free). Then it's just a matter of multiply layering the images.
