    • Place a camera somewhere then rotate piece from new angle

      Hello,

What I am trying to achieve is to show what happens to a particular member of a design as the structure rotates, so I'd like to look at the member then place a camera according to what I am seeing, then I will zoom out of the structure and go to the turning lever which will turn the mechanism... then the member of interest will be filmed while I operate the machine.

Can this be done on the free version of SU 8 ? Or do I have to buy the program? Does the purchased program support what I am asking?

      Thanks for the help.

    • RE: Help creating a 3D model of a hotwire cut airfoil.

      Hello Sam,

I watched your video. Unfortunately my wing is not as simple as your wing.

If you imagine the two templates above spaced 18" from each other, then a hot wire traces these two shapes, you can see how this shape is not something that can just be made by "scaling" one side, it is a shape that changes across the entire span of the wing.

One method I can think of is to cut sections from the wings and then trace those sections, align them and join them with the "draw-sandbox" tool but that defeats the purpose of designing since that would require a product that already exists to be reverse-designed into a CAD model.

      I appreciate the response however.

Is it not possible to have two different shapes, then some sort of command creates a solid object as if a skin was rolled around these objects? Take an ellipse and a square then create a skin that joins these two shapes into a vase like structure.

    • Help creating a 3D model of a hotwire cut airfoil.

      Hello All,

I developed this aircraft as a proof of concept of an Ultralight that I designed. I wanted to create plans for it so that others may build it as well. I am having troubles figuring out how to create the airfoil you see it isn't simply a "draw airfoil - extrude - scale other end".

The way this airfoil is produced is by taking two templates, one for the root chord of the wing ( center ) and one for the tip chord of the wing ( wing tips ). Then by use of a hotwire cutter, the airfoil is created by basically tangential cutting, so you see, by using a blend of both a washout of 2 degrees and a 0 degree incidence airfoil, you get a twisting "washout" effect.

I don't know how to make something like this in sketchup, can someone help me out?

Here are the airfoils which I drew myself.

No I have not, because I don't have sketchup pro.
      Thanks for your input

    • Does anyone have some Adobe Acrobat experience w/sketchup?

Can anyone help me out with creating plans? I love to design and build model aircraft. Google sketchup allows the modeler to create the model and see it dynamically before assembling. And if the creator comes up with a master piece he shares it with the world.

But I need to figure out how to do that. Like... I have the full version of Adobe Acrobat 9, so if I have a 3-view lets say of an aircraft. How to I create a PDF which is tiled for letter, (I hate doing this but this is how you print big/scale) and have a border, which you then cut and tape together to make a big picture.

      What I'm trying to accomplish-
-Plot or create fine lined plans (no blotchy/pixelated lines)
-Scale print 1:1 as in sketchup:printer
-Save space and not waste paper (green eco )

So if anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

    • Weight plug in for sketchup? (model airplanes application)

I just wondered if it was possible to get a plug-in for sketchup where you would say 1 sq. in of the material your building with would be say .01grams and then you could build your whole plane highlight it calculate the total sq in. it makes up and then find out how heavy your bird will be empty(no electronics) is there such thing? would be very usefull

then you could add the components in and put in for glue and tape and what not give them weight too and you could figure out approximae AUW(all up weight)

Also you could find where it balances(center point that has equal weight on both sides)

      does that exist?

    • Creating a 3View object from 3-view(aircraft specifically)

Well i use to have an account here musta gotten deleted, ive posted a post about this before but it was involving aircraft with rib formers, and a fellow showed me how to turn a 3-view into 3D by using sandbox-drawformers...

now i gotta figure out how to make 3D from a 3-view without cutouts(still didnt fully learn it with cutouts) but i have an idea... but its not exactly working...

my idea was to trace all 3 3-views top/right/front(front is a problem for my idea) but anyways i would expand them, and then intersect them, then trim off the excess and i should get my 3D shape... well its not working so easily...

      any other ideas?
