Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

There's also a curve maker plugin that allows you to draw different spirals (not only this parallel, if I am not mistaken, "Archimedes" spiral) [image: 9YM2_curve-maker.png] Also check out the other plugins on that site as they are really awesome for certain, special tasks.

Materials can be assigned to groups/components and edges, too, so they are not always that easy to get rid of. ThomThom has a nifty plugin to work with such messy models: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=17587 and he also has one that you can use to quickly replace one material with the other: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=26013 Also it is often an issue that these WH models are compilations of some other WH models (thus the very similar or sometimes same materials with different names). TIG has a plugin that aims to consolidate them: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=33516

Thanks for the help guys. To answer the questions, it said Pro in the corner, the license info was entered and accepted. I dont know what the issue was, but I managed to fix it. I uninstalled all traces of Sketchup from my computer, and reinstalled it. This time, a red welcome window popped up and said, my Pro version expired (because I hadn't entered my lisence yet) and these are the features that only Pro has... blah blah blah. That never happened the first time I installed Pro. So I entered my license info and now all is good. I don't know what the issue was... it seems like either cookies or something were getting it all confused, or somehow not everything that needed to was downloaded or something.

Of course if the SKP and SKB files are on the same hard drive and you can't access the SKP, you probably won't be able to access the SKB either. Better to just make a back up on a separate drive or other media.

The toolbar doesn't load on my system anymore either -- it could be a issue with Sketchup 8 or is could be they messed up something in the newest drivers. Best, Jason.

When I make large cities like that, I almost always have all the data from the city in GIS format. So it comes with street curb lines, building footprints. Then its super easy to take those layers into SU and make a city footprint, and extrude all the buildings to approximate heights. There have been times where I didn't have the GIS data though and I've copied in G.E. terrain data, and traced all the buildings as fast as possible and then deleted the G.E. terrain imagery and just used a nice clean flat plane. That is how I tend to do it at least, Chris

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIsaATIedtI I made a video that shows how I like to do it. One important thing is that in my video, I first smoothed the terrain. You could select all the faces and edges and open the "Soften/Smooth" Dialog window and move the slide until all edges appear to disappear and the tarrain looks smooth. Then just do like the video shows. Its a good quick method to get paths onto terrains. Chris

To texture large surfaces with the free Training Edition of Tgi3D SU Amorph you can work with smaller chunks. The UV mapping and texturing utility also keeps the previous texture. So what you can do is include a portion of the mesh that has already been textured in the next area and then you can try to do a seamless merge of the texture visually to the portion that was already textured.

Okay... so by a process of elimination I am thinking that its file related. Attached two pics: one from a 'problem' file... I then copied and pasted in place into a new skp file and imported the same view across and no clipping! Incidently I have saved the problem file back to v7 and opened it up in my older version of skp and it still clips, further confirming that it is probably file related... Now I just need to determine if its something I am doing as part of my workflow to cause the 'bug'. Will keep trying to isolate the issue. Standby... When I create new libraries for materials or for styles or components, I just stick them in the Materials, Styles or Components directories so I don't have to go searching for them in other places on my computer.

WOW this is one of my favorite threads in a long time. Great info here on stairs thanks for the great tuts Jeff and all others who have made usefully posts. Loving the stair porn link too. I have built a few steel spiral and curving stair cases over the years and have also built railings that go on top of beautiful curving stringers with a wood top rail on the railing. My question is would you build the stringers in this thread in the shop or on site? Basically I am asking if anyone has a link or pics of these being built. Also any one have any 2D shop drawings of stringers like these that they would be willing to share? Cheers S
