BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Acad drawing elements are unlike other Cad applications. In Acad, a line can be a simple 3d line, or rectangle with thickness, and extrusion direction (vector). A acad line with a thickness of 0.0 is a line, with a thickness of 1 inch, it is a rectangle with a height of 1 inch. You can not make a line with thickness in SketchUp. The SketchUp importer changes a line with thickness into a face. In SketchUp, when you model a set of connected edges in the x,y plane(say a polyline), then you loft the edges in the z direction, Sketchup will change the connected line into connected faces, and edges. SketchUp's DXF exporter will not translate this model into a polyline with thickness. The following is a portion of an ASCII DXF with some of my notes prefaced with #. A DXF listing always starts with a group code then followed by the data. This sequence is repeated throughout. Thickness, and bulge are as the tables above indicates. Some of the group codes are documented under "common group codes for entities". . . 0 #Acad group code precedes every piece of data POLYLINE #data is entity Name 5 #Acad group code for handle 29 #handle 8 #Acad group code for layer name T-2DPLINE-3 #layer name 62 #etc. 5 #etc. 66 1 10 #Acad group code for x 0.0 #x 20 #Acad group code for y 0.0 #y 30 #Acad group code for z 0.0 #z 39 #Acad group code for thickness 2.4332129974000671 #thickness 40 2.0 0 VERTEX #first vertex in polyline 5 34 8 T-2DPLINE-3 62 5 10 -1.3768750602197291 20 -3.437321703110606 30 0.0 0 VERTEX #second vertex in ployline 5 35 8 T-2DPLINE-3 62 5 10 -0.8415682007917144 20 3.2296819097655769 30 0.0 42 #Acad group code for bulge -0.9902342116099923 #bulge data 0 . . I do not know what AutoCad drawing elements require entity thickness, width, and bulge. At one time Acad dimension line arrow heads used a lwpolyline with width, but I do not know if Acad 2011 continues to do so. My copy of Volo View is good up to Acad 2000. Thanks for the info on TrueView. Had it on my system at one time, but didn't like, and removed it.

@gaieus said: It's modelhead and Notareal who figured this out. So this seems to be a broader issue and with IE. Good to know, thanks. It was not particularly pinpointed to IE (just a stong suspect). Anyhow it was verified that a new user profile did fix the problem, but the root for the issue did stay unlear (had no change to do a deeper analysis). Effect of 'random' entries should be trivial to test if one have time... just create manually similar random entries I sort of doupt that this actually have much effect, but still worth to test. No idea what might couse these entries.

Use the protractor tool. Bring it onto the face, then hold 'shift' to lock it to that plane. Click on one corner of the face, then the opposite corner, then the opposite corner one more time to draw a guide along the surface of the face. Now use the 'shift' key to lock the protractor to the red or green axis (depending on the orientation of your original face). Click once on the previously created guide (to start another guide). Click again elsewhere on the same guide. Type '90' and hit 'enter'. Now you have a guide to use to draw your line. No plugin needed.

I can't say for sure. Your issue sounds similar to one I was having while using a pocket usb drive. I was hoping my mention would spark something with someone else.

Another suggestion is to integrate Sketchup with a realtime rendering application eg. Lumion, Twinmotion or another. I know that in nearest future all architectural applications will be oblige to use this technology (directry from games). First one who will do that, will be world's leader and I believe that this will be Google Sketchup (my favorite tool in everyday work). I will be first customer. Just today Lumion gets models straight from 3d Warehouse. Integration should be easier then with V-ray.

@aadbuild said: Hey thanks Guys, I will get the dreaded 3d max sales person out to give me a run down. Australia needs some more Sketchupers, I tell every one I know how good it is but just cant seam to convince.... I think they think because its free it is not powerful? I have taught 2 people sketchup in my office and they love it and then they leave and start their own business. I know a few SU users in Perth. Infact, from what they tell me, SU is big in OZ Arch schools now. Even UWA arch course teaches students how to use them.

He posted the file to me. It was impossible to attach here as it is 9Mb+. To me, the intersection seems to be pretty smooth (regarding SketchUp1s nature to segmenting everything) but if really smooth results are needed, you need to make everything so detailed. The arch was made of really high segmented arcs, the dome way made of a really high segmented arc as the face to be lathed however the circle around which you lathed it is still the default 24 segmented circle. Such an intersection will always be somewhat segmented but if you are ready to sacrifice workability for smoothness and precision, you need to do it including all elements of the model. Either make the 'window' flat on the ground OR make it on a 'wall'. When you make the selected geometry into a component read the dialog and choose to make it glued/cutting as desired...

Thanks Chris. I have a lot of plug ins, though many I don't use, so this will give me a chance to clean up my plug ins. This is the last bit of information I needed to decide to upgrade to 8. Again, thanks.

FWIW, the SketchUp inspector window has always been displayed by default on my installations of LO. I believe the default is to have all of the inspector windows out on the right side although they can be closed.

@kenny said: Thanks for all the replies everyone. It would appear that at the moment I'll just have to put up with the slow performance. Whilst I could get a slightly higher spec it doesn't look like it would be worth it in terms of any meaningful performance improvement over my current set up. For the type of work I do Sketchup is still much faster and easier than any other 3D software but on large models the actual button clicking takes seconds whilst waiting for it to respond takes hours! It's very frustrating and throwing money at it in terms of equipment can't even address the problems. Hardware just doesn't seem to be able to keep up with how much we all push Sketchup. Or perhaps it's that Sketchup hasn't kept up with hardware in that it can't take advantage of the way hardware has gone with multi processors. Or a bit of both. Well Do what I do, have 2 to 4 SU sessions running and work on 4 different things. That way you are never waiting for Plugin X to complete a task Edit: Did I mention that I am a mild sufferer of ADD
