BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Thanks Rich! That was very useful! I was never using unwrapping on large scenes but single / multiple objects only. Actually even for rendering animations this will be MORE than helpful. Great, thanks again!

Dave - great suggestions on creating new materials - I will definitely start using this method. Thx. @dave r said: Once you have the materials "In Model" you can drag their thumbnails down to the palette, the grid area at the bottom of the Window. Then switch to the desired destination library and drag the thumbnails up from the palette. My preferred method for creating a material in the first place (on PC and Mac) is to use File>Import to import the image and apply it to a face I've already drawn that has at least one dimension already set for the known dimension of the texture. This allows me to skip the step of editing the dimensions of the material after importing. So for example, if I have a wood grain texture that is 8' long, I import and apply the material to a rectangle I've drawn that is 8' long. The width takes care of itself and so I don't need to worry about that. When I am importing new wood grain images, I might have 3 or more from the same log so I just make multiple rectangles first and apply the materials to them.

Are you printing to scale rather than a perspective view? It sounds like you have checked 'use high accuracy HLR' at the bottom right of the print dialogue. This will produce a vector drawing but at the expense of shadows and textures. Uncheck it to print shadows.

It makes sense to import vector lines if you need to be able to edit them or want to use them to flesh something out to 3D. If layers are a problem for you, clean them up or get rid of them before making the DWG file.

You don't need to hide anything to use the animation function with section cuts... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nKyWomUYxs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sQ-7dt95yw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khsFvyXLe-Q

01- You need some Ruby to delete all SectionPlanes: This line of code + enter in the Ruby Console will do that: m=Sketchup.active_model;m.start_operation('!');m.active_entities.grep(Sketchup::SectionPlane).each{|e|e.erase!};m.commit_operation It's somewhat long as in includes code to make it one step undo-able. It erases all SectionPlanes in the current context - so ones nested inside a group are not affected until you run the code inside an edit of that group... 02- As well as hiding other contexts completely during an edit session... SectionPlanes can be assigned Layers. That way you can assign different Layers to different SectionPlanes and switch them to be not visible in different Scene-tabs as desired: thus removing the visual 'clutter'. Get used to using Layers, Modes, Styles and Scene-tabs in combination - you can have various tabs set up to enhance your modeling experience - e.g. you don't need textures and shadows on when making most 3d forms, and they will slow down orbiting etc, a tab to troubleshoot - with a Style set to show hidden geometry, color edges by axis etc is also a useful thing...

Dave, Great example of the variety of line effects you can get just by adjusting the image's export size. All of these tips and tutorials have been very valuable and I appreciate everyone's help.

@dave r said: If the selected objects are components, you can save each of them as separate SKP files by right clicking and choosing Save as... Or you could make a nested component containing the objects you're interested in and again use Context>Save as... Or, if the objects are components and you want to save them separately, you could drag their thumbnails from the In Model components library to a desired local folder in the Components window. None of those options work, though, if you are using groups instead of components. This was helpful! Thanks!

When you have the feet selected you see the available modifier keys at the bottom of the screen. They have their uses. Like moving up the face of a building etc. Set the eye height at any time simply by typing the value and enter. The Eye tool is basically looking from your head, so you are able to look up and down as well as side to side. Whereas the feet keep your eyeline level until you change it.
