BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

You cannot rely on the order of elements in a Selection. If you freeze it using es=selection.to_a then the order is frozen - but not much use. You can extract objects from a selection using grep, e.g. ... gs=selection.grep(Sketchup::Group) Gives you an array of all groups in the selection. You can make an array of their names [sorted] and then find their matching id - into an hash - which might then be in an order you want... But you haven't really explained why the selected-items' order is so important for you...

Fredoscale stretching is good for more complex windows. It makes components unique, including nested components which are stretched. Sometimes this doesn't fit with your component strategy. You have to decide when and how to use this powerful tool. Windows and doors are definitely the most use I get from this tool. You've made one and you really don't want to rebuild for all the different sizes you need. The most work is going in and renaming the various components properly so you can use them by name in the future. I've never been able to be truly diligent in this regard. I have seen the tool do some strange things with multiple nested component but usually it handles anything you throw at it.

@joeanderson said: Thanks a lot for your advice and the link! However, is it possible to realise with the standard tools? Hi Joe, I was once resistant to using plugin and exclaimed "why can I not do this simple thing straight out of the box". Once I spent a few minutes working out how to install plugins i did not look back. With the Plugin Store and extension warehouse this could not be easier. I would recommend to give it a go and before you know it you will have more tools than you can shake a stick at.

Well, I always thought using duplicated components would create fewer edges/faces than the same number of groups, but alas they are identical and directly proportional to the number of each. I don't doubt that using components (as I do for about half my drawings) has speed/file size advantages, but this probably means that only reducing the number of edges/faces will help the triple-click issue. I know I could reduce detail, and undoubtedly simplify a lot of components/groups, especially those made when I first started this project, but it would take a massive amount of work. In the end splitting the file is a work around, but one I will have to use. BTW the Mac version of SU 2015 is 64 bit only, and checking memory usage SU has elected to give itself 2 GB of Ram and there is no virtual memory in use, and lots more memory available if it wants it. cheers ralph

... I fact it seems bette to Geo-Locate the model either by way of grabbing aerial location or manually > window > model info > geo locate before changing time zone in shadows. Geo-locating updates time zone in any case. Should work both ways I guess (though a time zone only isn't accurate enough) but least this works.

Well, sometimes things can solve themselves.... Last night my laptop did a major Windows update, and lo and behold today I have been working with sketchup and it's running just fine. Even rendering works without glitches and bugsplash. Sorry to bother in this matter. Laptop is a Lenovo G50, came with a 1 TB HDD, 16 GB ram, I7 dual core 3.5Ghz processor

I don't know code so im not changing it.. can anyone help with newb terms? :? there is no 'auto-instal' for any .rb files, only .rbz... notice the 'z', it's stands for 'zipped', so if you 'zip' any .rb then rename it's extension from .zip to .rbz, it will appear in the add extension list... john

Normally SketchUp shades surfaces as if the light source is at the camera. It does not cause shadows to be cast, regardless of settings. The "use sun for shading" instead shades surfaces as if the only light source is at the sun position. When shadows are displayed, this can produce a more realistic look because you don't have shading from one light source and shadows from a different one.

Unless you embrace open source tools. I'm already looking into it. New systems only get adopted if the client base accepts it (or has no alternative, as you already indicated); if it's rejected strongly enough, the new system will not survive.

I tried to import your DWG using the Options > Units of Meters... It imports. There are issues. because the 9 groups that are created have their origins miles away from their geometry, so the appearance is weird and any orbiting etc is awful - jittery. You have two choices. Either make each group in turn into a component using the context-menu, then immediately change its axes to a sensible corner on its geometry [context-menu again]. After doing all 9 it'll be fine. Or select the 9 groups and use 'Explode' [context-menu again] so their geometry is merged into one context, and their badly located origins are forgotten... Another possibility would be to remake the forms entirely in SketchUp - its some simple 3d geometry for one [pushpull/offset/move] and an array-copy to make the 9... No problem, if you figure it out bring the solution around. This kind of stuff happens in LO to me too, but I've always figured a workaround before...
