%(#800080)[Hi G; Yes, I do believe there's some mystery geometry in my specific model that causes the freeze. My workaround has been to do the SAVEAS, and then in the copied file delete, not hide, absoulutely everything that wont' appear in the 2d section cut. It's a bit of a bear, but at least I don't have to redraw in ACAD, right? At the least, the Forum has helped me confirm that I'm not missing any basic knowledge, and the various feedbacks have led to my workaround. much appreesh! N]

Hi Red, (Before trying this, make a test file first). You can always "save (a component) as..." by right clicking on it (note that components are actually real, "independent" skp files "embeded" into your model - this will explain everything). Now you save the component as a separate skp file which you can open and make any changes to. Note that you need to keep the axes for the further steps. Now if you go back to your original file and right click on the original, still "unchanged" component, you can "Reload" it with (in this case obviously) the changed one you've just edited. In your particular case, use this technique as it fits you. Instead of this, you can always copy elements (simple Ctrl+C) and paste them in place from the Edit menu (I actually have Shift+Ctrl+V assigned to this function) into the new model file.

@mirjman said: here's a very easy way to do this: draw a stray line anywhere select your component and the line at the same time use "flip along" to mirror on world axis delete stray is this what you are asking I don't think so, mirjman, as that sounds like a simply a flipped, but not a mirroredobject, but adding the extra steps as described by Wo3Dan, i.e. making the original object and your "stray line" a new group, which will have its bounding box aligned to the axes, then using scale -1 worked just fine. Thanks! John

These are great tips, Anssi, thanks. In fact, I know almost nothing about CAD and only learning the basics right now (and mainly for the "sake" of the forums here)

tom, you could contact support, but most likely the first thing they will suggest is do a clean reinstall. good luck. baz

Sophie, I'm on XP Pro, and yes it works for me - never had any problems with either versions 6 or 7. Is it just this one file, or have you always had trouble with it? Is it certain fonts, perhaps?

I am also having the same problem, and the above fixes do not work. If I use the local admin account on the system, it doesn't ask for the keychain, if I use an ldap authenticated/template account, it does ask for the keychain. I would love to deploy this application to the mac labs we have on campus, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a little freeware ap that would put a watermark image on a batch of images all at once. I used it before SU6 to put a watermark on images export from a model. I wonder if I could find it again.

I could have used additional help on organizing elements within a complex project. Slowly, the suggestions by regular contributors have begun to sink in and now I think I could do a better job of organizing than my initial (and largest) project to date. Specifically-- Demonstrate the recommended workflow of creating geometry on layer 0, grouping or componenting that geometry and moving it to a defined layer. Stressing that elements of a group or component can exist on different layers. I have no idea why someone would want this to happen (is there an instance where this would be advantageous?). Show how to best "fix" things should you inadvertently get a group spread across different layers. Stressing the workflow championed by Solo--creating pieces of the total and saving those components out to their own .skp file and importing them into a master composition file. This approach makes a lot of sense to me now for reasons of organizational and library-building. I agree the Intro to Rubies tut would be a good thing. Another idea would be to preview a number of the most useful rubies to show just what they do and how they work, and perhaps discuss differences between rubies that do similar things.

I'd hold with the SLI until you can get things running stable. SLI is just another thing that might make things more complicated. In order to try to get to the bottom of this it's best to keep things simple.
