In SU, make a scene (View menu > animation > add scene) with your plan view without the section cut and another one for the elevation view with the section cut. Now in LO, in the tray > SU model > View tab, somewhere at the top right you can change which scene to display. You cannot access section planes and cuts from LO so all has to be set up in SU. When we get to the end of this, I may chop this topic into two and move this second part into the LayOut forum.

Thanks for the fast reply! I have removed the rivets and this seemed to work. An entire side of the rivets was doubled up too no wonder google did not like it! Thanks for your advice. Next time I will start it with a bit more structure to my building work and think on when I ca reuse a component. Thanks again

Hi Agrazdi, hi folks. See this SU file for ideas. This one was made when the Rotate Tool could not easily set its rotation axis and had to rely only on an orienting plane. Today, wit plugins that allow the twisting of a model, it would probably be easier. Also, now I would do one half and use mirroring possibilities to assemble a complete model. Moebius strip.skp

Hi ThorsonB, hi folks. If your objects have been modeled as components on the ground, they may be glued to the ground. Right click on any object and see if you have a choice labeled "Unglue" in the contextual menu. If so, choose it and now you shall be able to move the object up or down. Just ideas.

Fwiw, you can enter fractional dimensions. Draw a line (of any length) then immediately enter 1 3/4 in the measurement box (just start typing the number. No need to highlight the measurement box with a mouse click) same for rectangles (as well as the other tools). Draw a rectangle then enter 1 1/2, 3 1/2 in the MB and the rectangle will be drawn to those dimensions.

@escapeartist said: I thought I'd give this a try and see what happens. Unfortunately, it leaves a more complex model full of missing faces and materials, not quite as badly as the obj exporter.rb that has been floating around or a while (I can't get it to work at all). What still works best is to extract the .dae from a .kmz and import that to Blender, and you can export from there into the .ase or whatever other format with a plugin; though I must say it imports quite a mess of triangulated faces, and if you want quads you're out of luck. From my experience on importing Sketchup models to CE2 via collada, the problem with glitches on the models come from exporting an untextured model. This can be solved simply by applying a texture to every visible face of the model, easily done if all its faces are connected, you press shift + LMP while applying a texture and all the faces will be textured. After that there should be no problems.

@gaieus said: There is a "Film and stage plugin" for SU - although originally it was written for version 5 and has not been upgraded AFAIK but I think it should work on later versions, too): http://sketchup.google.com/download/previousplugins.html (scroll down to it). I think it can do what you wish here. I downloaded it and have been playing with it. Documentation seems to be a little thin. I'm still determining if some strange behavior is normal or if there are problems with it with SK7. But it's showing great promise for what I'm trying to accomplish. Thanks! drew

I wouldnt worry too much about exporting and importing the .obj in sketchup, it is all handled by the script so it is simply a case of a couple of menu clicks.

@starlex said: So, what about difficulty? Is it harder then Max? Vue imports .skp files directly. @starlex said: I was noticed, than SU7 is more faster with Hi Poly objects than SU6. Maybe, if I will bought quad-core top processor, I will be able to work with trees and plants in SU? SU won't make use of multi-code processors. You might get use for it in Vue - I'm not sure how it works. But for SU, it's the speed of the processor and the speed of your RAM and the rest of the system. Higher speed rating for your hardware.

Also, have a look at our extensions index: http://www.sketchucation.com/extensions-index/ Far from being complete up-to-date (it does involve a lot of work none of us can assign to it at the moment) but at least a useful start.

See, Greg, this is why the actual example is needed. As for components cutting through thick walls - it is not possible at the moment. They can have only one axis system thus one gluing and cutting plane. There are workarounds however - you can intersect the inner face of the thick wall with the component or use some truicks. I have "compiled" the experiences and "tips&tricks" of "generations" of SU users in a little tutorial here. One will find out these techniques by him-/herself sooner or later anyway so it is just like re-inventing the wheel but a forum is just to learn from each other. Here is an example file I uploaded into the warehouse (read the description on how to enable double cutting "effect" - as it is not reall cutting double bey on its solo self). Another example without making a parent component - just placed two components mirrored on the two, opposite faces. Finally another "trick" in a video here - wonder if you figure out how I made it [flash=425,344:1l2eqnhi]http://www.youtube.com/v/ITO-oaowwrU&hl=en_US&fs=1&[/flash:1l2eqnhi]

A CAD polyline is imported into SUp with a 'width' that will give double lines if it is >0, e.g. the polyline is 50mm wide in CAD so it comes into SUp as a 50mm wide 'ribbon'... To stop this use CAD to edit the file and filter, and set all polylines width=0, OR explode all polylines into ordinary lines before importing - If you don't have AutoCAD then apps like DoubleCAD are freeware that can edit dwg/dxf files and works with skp too...

@Remus: yes, you can trigger several animations with one click by separating them with ; but all these animations start and end at the same time. therefore the 'Time Line' approach is more suitable for some models. @Chris: damn! I dimmly remember your ping pong component. so there was no need to figure it out on my own on the other hand. it was a lot of fun @Thomthom: my goal is a bit more humble - an armada of robots cleaning up my flat is enough for the time being. and I should be careful with 'taking over the world' plans. I am German and I dimmly remember this moustached guy...
