Editing Textures

I originally built a model with version 7 and pinned the same textures from the texture palette to the model. Now I want to add shading detail that can't be done in SketchUp by itself, such as having a graduated area starting with a dark area that ends with the original lighter tint or adding some splotches of darker or lighter colors, other packages like Zbrush allows painting directly on the textures.
To be able to have this type of detail with SketchUp is the simplest method to unwrap the texture, edit it in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, then rewrap the texture back on the same surface using a new texture texture name or is there simpler method? Which plugin should be used to do this?

If you do a search for whaats UV tools version 0.2 this lets you export the model to another program then do your UVmapping there, probably the easiest way to do complex UVmapping 'within' sketchup.

UV tools version 0.2 documentation shows the model needs to be exported as an obj file before manipulating the texture. Is there anyway to apply the edited texture back to the SketchUp model to avoid having to reimport the obj file back?

Hi Joe,
You can do such things in SU 7 IF you make a texture unique on a face (right click the face with the texture applied...) and then right click again, go to texture > Edit texture...
Now SU will open your texture (for that whole face) in your image editor you have previously defined in Preferences > Applications (if you have not defined anything, it will open it in your system's default image viewer).
Now any editing you make here, will be instantly applied on the texture (face) you started from as soon as you press the save button in your image editor.

I wouldnt worry too much about exporting and importing the .obj in sketchup, it is all handled by the script so it is simply a case of a couple of menu clicks.
