Can you 'save as' the components in question with all layers on and hidden geometry revealed, so as to understand exactly what they consist of and experiment a little more easily with them. Explode them... Don't redraw.....yet. The components don't look too large to post, I don't think, but I have little experience with that.

Agreed! To get my geometry into its own separate file out of Autocad, I normally will select it all and a wblock command which will write it out as a block - essentially its own file. Then if I need to I go into that file and audit and purge and remove unwanted layers. And I tend to export from CAD in phases. I NEVER ever ever try to export everything at once. I wil generally make a large "X" symbol in my CAD file and then I always export that with everything that I export, so I can always line up that X inside of SU to make sure it all lines up correctly. I export first my topo, then a layer for fences, then a layer for concrete, then building footprints, etc. THat way I can deal with them all much easier inside of SU, separate from one another. I once had an old instruction sheet of how I like to export my CAD stuff. I'm sure its still around but I think its very outdated and I've updated some workflow issues. I should get that out and re-write it. Chris

I made this model with the plugin Rich suggested: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=bc92eca8611ed04d2470944666440e50 Then just out of curiosity, I simply reloaded the Earth image with a Mars image and it kept the spherical UV mapping perfectly: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=6ed69ca0de0718c2bb014d52f42fdd7f so you can even use either model any reload the image in them.

Hi, Philip, I don´t really know what kind of plugin do you have in mind. There is a way to set up Photoshop so it can use the tablet input, but I don´t know if this applies to mesh painting. As far as I can remember, PS CS4 Extended allows import and export of OBJ, U3D, KMZ, Collada and 3DS models import. You can edit textures on 3D model in PS CS3.

@unknownuser said: SU exports are at 72 dpi. If I need a nice crisp drawing, I do the following: In the Export 2D Graphic Dialogue Box, go to Options. Uncheck "Use view size" and set a larger image size. I like my images to be 300 dpi for the most part, so if I want a 10" wide image, I set the width to (300 dpi x 10") = 3000 pixels. Then use photo editing software to reset the size and dpi before you send to your client. This does not work for me. I would think that SU asks to set image size if other than view it might remain at 72 dpi max, though it does seem to export as you input for the view, thereby upping the res for the view, somewhat contrary to the dialog: it is still the view but at a higher res. But then when I import the supposedly higher res image it looks no better, even worse as it is more gray, less black, even after converting to 2 color (black and white, and sharpening). Probably for an attempted line drawing export, anti-alias should be 'off'???

Your right it did take a while, it was very good to see what was done. I was glad that I did it the same way. Go and do the walls as well or just do 1st floor first. I don't think it will be a problem, is there? Like I said I'm off line now. I'm tempted to carry on but my eyes are tired and thats when mistakes happen. p.s. You can only do a moving screen shot like the one showing me the answer to the solution? Many thanks John

actually i think in the window>shadows palette you do want "use sun for shading" checked and set the "light" slider to 0 and the the "dark" slider to 100. This should prevent the color of a face from changing darkness based on angle of view [image: mJiO_a.jpg]

If it is really and "definitely" on face (and of course, the edges are all connected to a closed loop, too), you can try to select everything (the face and all the supposed to be edges of the face), right click on the selection > Intersect > ...selected. This should also form the face. SU sometimes does not form a face this way either. Then try to connect endpoints of opposite edges until you can fill all the shape or at least find where the glitch can be. Later (if they are really coplanar), you can erase these connecting lines. If you lose the face again this way, they are definitely not coplanar somewhere.
