yes i am purging before saving,.One other thing two of us often work on and swap between models, the other guy is working on windows, we use drop box and work on different parts of the model ( not at the same time), could that have any bearing.....?

This is an old post, but I figure if anyone else stumble upon it with the same issue this tip would be quite useful: I have tried out the new plugin "s4u Hide Line" and it does the trick of showing hidden geometry with a click of a button: https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/s4u-hide-line

I did use "Align View" which works fine for that particular moment. But I need to go back to the orthogonal views regularly. I installed the plug-in for extended standard views as suggested and it works perfectly. Seems like this really ought to be standard behavior for Sketchup. I've just replaced my standard views toolbar with it. Thanks for all of the help.

Have you viewed your model [SKP] in Monochrome mode with a Style using a very contrasting colored back-face-material? I suspect that some of your faces are oriented 'backwards' ! Select a face and right-click 'Reverse' - or try 'Orient' [having preselected a 'good' face]. There are tools to fix it too... Avez-vous vu votre modèle [SKP] en mode «Monochrome» avec un Style en utilisant un très contrastées de couleur en arrière-face-matériau? That hidden geometry around the origin is interacting with your new geometry and whilst the edges stay hidden new faces are forming and magically appearing. As has been said - do some tidying up...

My thought would be to make the stair tread both transparent and an emitter and make the LEDs emitters as well. I haven't tried it but that would be my approach.
