No save or open function
-
I recently had to format my hard-drive and do a factory restore on my laptop. So of course I have had to reload all my software. The problem I'm having is SU8 gives me no open or save function. I click on file open and it closes with no action. Same with save as, import, export. I can save as template. I can also open a file by double clicking on it. OD course this isn't useful if u cant save it. I have tried just about every fix I can think of but no luck. I have uninstalled it many times, tried to clean any reference to it in the registry that I can find. Played around with user settings. I didn't have any problem before. The only thing I can think of to do at this point is do another factory restore and see if its a problem with windows. I am using Vista. I really don't want to do that due to the days of downloading updates and having to re-install so many different programs.

That definitely sounds like a problem. I'm thinking that you've, A. had a bad install and B. there's a registry entry or entries that you didn't get cleaned out when you tried to do that. If I remember correctly there are some registry entries under Windows that are related to SketchUp. Perhaps it/they are the culprit. I'm not able to look for them at the moment to tell you where they are because I'm away from my PC. I can look when I get home from work or perhaps someone else will do it before I can. Recently I had a similar problem with some different software and had to delete those registry entries manually. You might need to go in and remove those registry entries manually although playing in the registry without extreme caution can have bad consequences and make bad words fill the air.

OK I got it working , I kinda suspected it was a windows issue and when I noticed several other programs having the same issue that confirmed it... Quicktime and several other programs had no file open/save dialog. I am not sure what fixed it as I tried several things before testing but it was one of the following. I ran SFC /scannow which said there were some corrupt files and not all could be repaired, I also went to DEFAULT PROGRAMS in the control panel and reset file associations. It may have been setting windows search explorer to all by doing the following.
start/default programs/set your default programs/scroll down to Windows Search Explorer and select it/then select Choose defaults for this program/click the ALL checkbox and SAVE.
Not sure which of those did the trick but after searching allot I saw that other people had the same problem but not much luck in finding out why so hopefully that will help someone in the future. Although I wish I hadnt broken my rule about trying one fix at a time so that I could be sure of which one got it working.

Well, I'm glad you got it going.
