I re-read what you wrote and my ealier statment is wrong the edge would switch on in going thou the model with textures or shading the lines and in the hidden line, wireframe, back edges or x-ray view the view goes completely white. See the screenshots below but if profile were off add hidden geometry were off edges are made to guides or smooth you will see what you stated sgcrain » Yesterday, 12:59 pm [image: eN3Z_pic_0055.jpg] [image: 3mmI_pic_0056.jpg] [image: u5wR_pic_0057.jpg] if this not the case A fast fix next time is using your undo's back beyon the problem or restart another sketchup with out closeing the old copy model or object to new and save old model and close old sketchup in new if it problem go's away it a style problem or state of sketchup if it dosn't goes away its a material problem (transparcy on and style edge is by material) now when you close the new it refresh reg back to before the old sketch up started which is good But now if you alreadly closed sketchup before starting a 2rd sketchup you can load a different model or reload a new style if the problem still their maybe now you have to reinstall sketchup reg by reinstall sketchup I which you did.

@pbacot said: I found with curvizard, Cleanup contours for all curves, then simplify contours for some of the curves with larger segment count leaves you with only a couple places to fix by hand. But I think the contours show too much concentration of edges in some places and overall I would think you'll get better results with fewer and more evenly spaced segments. Rich is right and knows best how to do this sort of thing. You could also work on this with half the canopy. I also worked at 10 time the size for good measure. How do you arrive at the correct section and draw those curves? Thank you so much pal, I finally solved the problem, thanks to curvizard, which I had never heard of before you told me. All I did was simplify all the cuves, it helped a ton: there is not a single imperfection to be found in the resulting model. The model on the right is the new one. [image: S3Yc_canopy.PNG] Thank you, pbacot!

There is no need to make changes to files if it just "works" (ie. SketchUp opens them). I just keep old files untouched so they can still be opened in older versions.

@Dale: Yes it will just be native SU output @pbacot: That is a good idea I will play with that a bit and see if anything comes out @earthmover: That is a very helpful thread indeed. I think this may get me pretty darn close to what I want if I take some careful notes about distance and such. It seems like I could get something close by measuring the angle of the field of view and use this to set the scale. Hmmmmm.. Awesome, and quick responses. I love it! Anyone else?

So I relaunched Sketchup manually removing the "20%" and replacing with spaces but it appeared to do nothing. Can anyone recommend the installation process on this? I would greatly appreciate it as there are some concepts I think would benefit my lectures on Native American canoe building in the Pacific Northwest region that building a 3d model would save some much still frame explanation.

@dave r said: I was able to scale in between by snapping the scale handle to the intersection of two guidelines with no problem. The scale factor displays as ~1.01 but it is indeed snapping to the intersection. Part of the problem is the shape of the object is not uniform, although it is flat. So, the scale handles do not fall on any part of the selection perimeter. HOWEVER You gave me an idea that almost works perfectly, at least within an acceptable error. I needed to scale the thickness at one end of a tapered tube with a tapered thick skin from about .45inch down to .250inch (and to other thicknesses as well). The tube is about 8 feet in diameter (but squarish in shape) so the thickness changes are minute in comparison. I added a short line from the objects scalable (inside surface) perimeter down to where a scale handle is located. I then laid a guide line offset by that length from where the scaling should end up. I selected the perimeter and the tiny line then scaled (centered and uniform) down to the offset guideline. I got as close as .252inch after a few tries, good enough. Now, I gotta do that about 10 different times with different thicknesses. As for setting units, Model Info does not provide for setting scale precision, as it does for lines and angles. But still, is there any way to up the scale precision? I tried Fredos scale, but it didn't help, mainly I guess, due to my lack of fully knowing how to use that tool.

BTW Tomaz's frontface.rb is great for this I use it a lot, you don't even have to open components or groups for editing just start front face and wave it over reversed faces.

Can I suggest that first you ensure that you have the latest version of SketchUp 8 - Before v8M2 automatic installation was not an option... Now get Thomthom's 'Simple Plugins Installer' liked off the Ruby Index [see menu above]. Download that tool's RBZ archive to your PC. As explained in its download page instructions, use Preferences > Extensions > Install... button and find the file + OK. It automatically installs the file for you. [If you have insufficient 'security permissions' to write to your PLugins folder you will be told - to fix that issue highlight the ../SketchUp../Plugins folder icon and right-click context-menu to Properties > Security > Edit ans set permissions to FULL for everyone including yourself, you might need to have Admin privileges to do this change.] Assuming you have now got 'Simple Plugins Installer' installed then there'll be a new Plugins menu submenu, that has tools which will auto-install any of the four common toolset formats - single file RB/RBS and archives RBZ/ZIP. So now once you have downloaded a toolset you can install it 'stress-free'... However, please read each tool [or support library] download page carefully, and ensure you have any additional supporting files/libs downloaded and installed too... Then all you have to do is read [and understand] the new tool's usage notes so you know which menus/context-menus/toolbars items appear in, how the tool is actually used etc etc...

Hi folks. To add to Dave's post, don't forget that you can orbit, pan and zoom even in the middle of an operation. For example, you can click to start a line, orbit to see the target where you want it and finally click on the target to finish the line. Another example: you want to add a circle whose center is on an endpoint located in a maze of complex geometry and then extend it on another endpoint that is hideen inside another complex geometry. The procedure could be like this: 1 - Pan, orbit and zoom in on the geometry to be used to attach the center of the circle. 2 - Select the Circle Tool. 3 - Click on the required endpoint to start the circle, making sure that its orientation is correct. 4 - Zoom out, pan and orbit in order to bring the target point in view. 5 - Switch to X-Ray Mode to actually see the target point inside its enclosing geometry. 6 - Zoom in on this target point. 7 - Click on the target point to complete the circle. 8 - Turn X-Ray mode off. Steps 1 and 2 can be reversed as can steps 4 and 5 or 5 and 6. The best is to experiment with these facilities. After a while, you will begin to appreciate the flexibility and power of SketchUp. Just ideas.

Good job, Adam. I was going to post some things about "manual" roof modeling and drew some around the garage. But I found some of the discrepancies and ran out of time. Looks like you figured it out fine. Peter

I don't have Net Framwork installed for SketchUp (I think it's only required for Layout etc.), and some even recommended not to install it. On the other side, things change rapidely with Wine and I don't see a difference when I install .Net. As thomthom said, it's likely something with OpenGL. What you describe was more common many many years ago when you used a compositing window manager and a 3d app. So it would be useful to know which operating system version you use. The proprietary graphics cards often come a long way and new series achieve usable drivers a year after release. I've had good experiences with Intel.
