Chris, You are indeed correct there are various restrictions, setbacks, and access requirements that make the desired end-product less than perfect. However we are going for something rough here -- We have the mother polygons and the subdivision potential for each - we need to divide the polygon into even sized by the subdivision potential. Our thought is that if we have equally-sized polygons for each 'mother' parcel (original polygon), we can use a Greeble script (or other) to plop a simple 3d house structure into each parcel, export to Google Earth, and have a rough visual image of what agricultural/forest land could look like if subdivision proceeded. Right now, we have used fly-overs in Google Earth just showing highlighted polygons (exported from ArcGIS) that have the potential to subdivide. It would be better if those polygons were split and a simple house was there in its place. Any help is appreciated.

I've had a few models that this happens on regularly. One was made by another guy and I inherited it. That model would regularly have issues that ended up in deleted geometry. A few others I made myself from CAD imports. Its not too common, but also not completely uncommon. And maybe certain modeling habits lead to more problematic models. So its not really probable, but it is a theory of what could be happening Chris

Ah, OK, that it is. Instead of Push/Pull to go back to the face, I can use Move and the down arrow. That is what I was looking for. Once more: thanks a lot!

Thanks, Rich. That is a relief. I did actually update my profile, when I restored my avatar, but it didn't stick. I'll try again. EDIT: It didn't stick because I balked at characterizing my level of expertise, which IMO should be self-evident but I don't want to argue about. EDIT some more: Not that I think you would, even if you would. I bet somebody would.

Round Corner just isn't packed as an RBZ file. No biggie, though. You can either rename the ZIP file to .rbz and load it with Install Extension of you can extract the files from the ZIP file with something like 7zip to the Plugins folder. Make sure you also get the current LibFredo files too.

Hi CactusMatt, hi folks. I suggest that you take the time to view the video tutorials to get acquainted with SketchUp (SU). It is more capable than you think in making this very simple design. Believe me, the few hours taken in viewing these videos will save you a lot more hours of frustration when using SU. In the mean time, here is a reconstitution of your pannel, using some assumptions. Click on the scene tabs of this SU file for ideas. Panel-Loc extrusion profile - JL.skp If you save only the final extruded panel, you will see that the size of the resulting file is 20K. Best regards.

I use the following plugin, Hole on Solid tool v1.6.3, to trim, miter or drill holes. It will work on groups and components. It is not perfect, but sometimes it is a lot easier to make a miter cut or a trimming cut though multiple stacked groups/components using this tool. Just draw a face representing what you wish to remove, select the face and then select one at time the groups/component you wish to modify. Ken

Gees, you guys are helpful! I really do appreciate all of your comments and advice. Credit where credit is due Mr. Sonder, they are really useful videos and some beautiful models and drawings. I'd be printing and framing some of those bad boys to put up on show! I've used SU to produce some simple schemes in my day job (Mechanical Engineer) which I then export out as an iges for our draughtsmen to import into our CAD system. it works ok, except import exporting from different versions (I have to import as an STL and export as an iges). My point being is that I have used it to a basic level and am starting to understand how/when to apply groups and components and to setup scenes. I guess i'm trying to think ahead and get my structure in place first before I draw anything, so your comments and advice are helping to clear things up in this respect.

Hi Hamlet G, hi folks. In SketchUp (SU), layers are used only to control the visibility of objects. Normally, you keep base geometry on Layer 0 and assign groups or components to other layers. This is what you seem to be doing so, everything looks fine so far. The easiest way that comes to my mind to manage various combinations of layers visibility or invisibility is to use scenes. For example, suppose that you have a component called A. This components has two sub-components called A1 and A2. Now suppose that you want to show two options, one with only subcomponent A1 showing and the other with only subcomponent A2 showing. You create 2 layers that you can call whatever you want. Lets call then A1 and A2. You assign sub-component A1 to layer A1 and, of course, sub-component A2 to layer A2. Then you create 2 scenes that you can call whatever you want. Lets call one Option 1 and the other Option 2. On layer Option 1, you show layer A1 and you hide Layer A2. On the other scene, you show layer A2 and you hide Layer A1. Don't forget to update the scenes after changing the visibility of the layers. Maybe you can uncheck the box that tells the layer manager to remember the camera position. That way, if you orbit, pan or zoom between views, you wont loose that view when you switch option. Once this is done, a click on the relevant scene tab will make visible the required layer and hide the non required one and thus, will only show one of the two sub-component, even if they are occupying the same location in space. Just ideas.

And briefly speaking: there is no such feature in SU as "stacking order" or "send back" etc. like there is in 2D applications (where there is no other way of solving the problem). SU is meant to be used in 3D where everything has some thickness or at least some distance from another object just like in "real life" and this should (ideally) prevent Z-fighting. A solution can be that you set these objects to cut a hole (i.e. "hide" what's underneath) but that also has its limitations as SU can only cut a hole on a raw face (and one face at a time) so if you are trying to put one component onto another, it will not work or if you want an object to cut a hole on two, adjacent faces (like in your example image), it will not work (only on one of them). So try to work in real 3D instead.
