V8.0 is released https://sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=2Dtools Or via the ExtensionStore dialog. It fixes a glitch with v2026 whereby some MAC users could not get the TAB key press/up to work to open dialogs in some tools, and some PC users had to press/up 4 times to make TAB work. But <=2025 users had no issues. I've now improved the onKeyUp methods to optimize TAB use in v2026, but it can still be flaky for some users. including me needing 4x press/up! So as an additional option I've added one press/up on the Shift key which will also open the dialogs, in certain tools like LineStyle and Hatching. The Help pages explain this dialog opening more fully. Please try and report back issues...

Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

This has been discussed numerous times in the recent past. You might want to do a search on the topic rather than starting it all over again. Type in your search terms in the Search box on the upper right of the screen.

My suspicion would be that Trimble...as the new owners of SU...will help manage (sarcasm there) the 3DW for as long as Google needs it for populating Google Earth with manually made content. After that, it's anybody's guess. We've already seen links on this forum to very impressive examples of scanned, auto-generated buildings and terrain. It's only a matter of time before Google Earth follows suit. As Pete (or was it Jeff?) suggests, SU is old technology for populating a globe...nether fish nor fowl...not fast enough to build an entire city, not accurate enough for professional purposes...and 3D buildings in general are nowhere near as practically useful as Street View. I can't think that Trimble are going to be overly impressed with the vast majority of the content available, which makes me doubt that the 3DW will continue long in its present form. Vetting content is a non starter...SU is now way too big; and the rate of upload is stratospheric. The 3DW is based on the model of Objective Networks, the free precursor to FormFonts. ON was vetted...and it took a small army of student volunteers at CalPoly in San Luis Obispo to do it...and that was when SU was Pro only, with a tiny userbase. We are way beyond that stage now; and the logistics of control are simply impossible. It may be OK limiting it to manufacturers etc, but the free exchange of models by casual users is utterly unmanageable on any kind of regulated basis.

@jrm1 said: I'm a landscape designer. My SU models use a lot of 3D plants, which slows the Mac down after a while. I was wondering if there were any tips for keeping the size down. For instance, does grouping reduce the 'load' on the computer? Hey, do all the modelling in the landscape arch team. what i do is combine the VRay render wit photoshop. I avoid 3d trees like the plague. My pc (at work) and macbook pro (at home) both struggle with 3d plants at all. If I were you i would forget the 3d plants and buy a good image pack. This is the one we bought, obviously it is £300 but they do smaller packs. http://www.3drender.co.uk/products-page-2/bundles/all-in-one-bundle-complete-1000/#

@solo said: @aerilius said: What about having the basecamp every time (or every second time) at a different place? Something like: SketchUp on Tour around the world? That would mean looking for new pubs , we have the whole Boulder thing worked out, everything in walking distance (even crawling) lots of stuff to do, beautiful, great weather and perfect facilities, not forgetting cheap motels. Also what is a hit is to tour the Sketchup office and see how little work they actually do between climbing walls, pool tables and other distractions. How good was that, Pete? Baker Street Bar & Grill was just next to my hotel and just around the corner from Google Offices; what else is there that's needed...? I think Trimble are just starting to realise what they've gotten into...

I believe a Mac pro refresh is imminent, could be 16 core or even 20 at the high end fast but pricey ! My machine is not a year old yet so I'm in no hurry to upgrade. I expect I'll upgrade the cpu's from 2.93 to 3.46 when the price drops.

@lersince1991 said: Ok so I've attached another image which I have edited to show the right angle that the view forms in the bottom right. Also I've mocked up whats missing at the top. and you're saying if you zoom out with the scroll wheel, that angle changes? fwiw, the sketchup camera doesn't function exactly the same as a normal camera but you should definitely be able to get any view you desire.. fwiw pt2.. I personally wouldnt be concerned with trying to get a pano out of sketchup itself.. zoom out, get the fov & perspective to your liking. export the image much larger than necessary at the viewport ratio then crop & resize in another app. (preview.app can do both easily.. window select then cmmd-K for crop.. tools -> adjust size to resize.. not only will this give you more flexibility when getting the proper view, you'll also get a higher quality image upon downsizing it post.

Is it an RGB image? SU on Windows has issues with CMYK images. Otherwise indeed, post the image itself.

here's a neat case study (neat also because the 2nd page shows a plugin used internally by turner which could be seen as a bit of a preview of the type of changes we may see in sketchup itself) http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/2012/01/sketchup-pro-case-study-turner.html these people are building the tallest building in usa (and i happen to have a perfectly framed view of the thing down my street ).. of course they're not using sketchup as the backbone but they've definitely found a way to integrate it into their company.. and seriously, if sketchup wasn't helping them make things happen, they wouldn't be using it. there isn't a one software solution out there right now.. even i use a two software approach for the drawings (3 if you count layout as a separate software).. i guarantee your friend could find a way to use sketchup in a way that would benefit if he so desired. (ok.. not quite with the guarantee bit.. i don't actually know what he does) [edit] hm.. maybe they aren't building the towers.. just the crazy new downtown station.. in which case, i don't have much of a view of said project..

@thomthom said: 160 million faces within SketchUp??? Or within the render? Within SketchUp. Twilight works inside SketchUp but since it instanced the tree it only calculated it once. The top image is in SU, bottom post-production render (SU+Twilight+PS). The PS was mostly the sky and color tweaking.

Thanks for that! Yes your second method is valuable for this sort of simple "straight object" But maybe not with more organic object With this a normal Boolean Difference should be used or your first manual method [image: eclatemoteur.jpg]

Use several Scene tabs to remember views, layers, shadows and styles etc. When modeling use one with a simple style - with no fancy edge effects, no textures, no shadows, no fog etc and with any layers containing unneeded entourage set 'off'. You can also have a tab for 'troubleshooting' showing hidden geometry, in Monochrome mode etc. You can have style that keep the current camera, so toggling between two tabs needn't change the view, just the rendering settings, visible layers etc... Have other scenes set up for your actual 'presentation', using fancy edge detailing, full texturing, shadows, fog, entourage layers 'on' etc... When you have a SKP set up that suits your needs then save a version of it [with its entities deleted etc] as the 'default Template'. That way you always have the same set up when you open a new SKP. You will also need to remove unwanted/unused components from the Browser [delete individual ones, or purge_all if you want to keep none], also unwanted scene-tabs, layers, materials and styles can be removed from the Template before the final save: you can have a Template [or even several Templates!] with your own customized preset scene-tabs[with view/shadows/etc], layer-sets, styles, materials and components; even if they are unused initially...
