BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

Have you set View > Hidden Geometry > ON ? That, combined with a Style that displays edges, and has profiles set to show thicker... Perhaps used in conjunction with toggling X-ray mode ON/OFF, and also using View > Monochrome mode, to remove visual clutter from any textures etc, and show up any reversed faces... These could at least let you see all edges etc...

You guys have some great ideas. There is a wing of this house that is the culprit. I am paying attention to the instructions above and reset axis. There are so many surfaces that don't make and have to stitch them together. Just the masonry buttresses are signal enough to be wary. I am putting it together for dwg and finish in cad. If I can isolate a piece I'll post it. Thanks everyone!

@andreactro said: Hi! I bought this today and it hasn't arrived, anyone had the same problem? What hasn't arrived? Did you download it from the site? I would expect an e-mail with the license info but you should check your spam folder. If you didn't get an e-mail, you should contact them directly through their website. Did you try it before sending money? From the website it appears this extension hasn't been updated for versions newer than SU2014. It might not work correctly in newer SketchUp versions.

The problem, if it is a problem, may lie with CAD and not Sketchup. I no longer use CAD but have suffered, along with the OP and many others, the frustration of trying to use CAD dwgs in SU. In SU a line drawn over another line results in just one line (although the resultant line will be broken if the underlying line was a different length). In CAD the reverse is true and where there appears to be a single line there could be any number of separate lines all occupying the same location. Therefore when a dwg is imported into SU a conflict occurs when SU has to accommodate multiple instances of geometry all in the one place. In applemango85's original post it appears that the brick arch is the problem. At certain zoom levels some of the lines seem to be thicker. If the CAD dwg was constructed using an array of just two bricks (top & bottom course) then there will be multiple instances of lines in the same place. This is just my take on the situation of course!

It isn't in the Plugin Store but the first post in this thread has the links to both the imperial and metric versions.

Add a skirt to your terrain then the section cut should work.

Perhaps mesh simplifying in MeshLab helps and does not do much deformation (or almost at all)? Free & easy if the object has no holes (If I remember correctly the manifold has to be closed). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_r-cT2jngk

I see an extra set of bounding box lines in her screenshot that I don't see in yours. Her blue one is the third one in. Yours is only the second one in. There's no reason it should be different between Mac and PC.

@calypsoart said: Still, Quadros are not cheap. I'll be on the lookout for a good used P2000 in the future. CAD graphics card series are not required for your listed applications, actually they are burning money for no benefit. Buy a capable nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6G and you're fine, as make Asus and MSI are recommendable.

That is very clever! So I turn the surface and drape lines into a component, copy them, scale up e.g. 100X, drape, and the original components will get the cut lines, without having to downscale anything.

@jonfar said: thats good to know, because my 100+ mb files lag a bit ...that Sketchup was mostly CPU/RAM intensive... SU is CPU intensive (single-thread performance), nevertheless for a balanced system an appropriate GPU (as well as enough RAM) is of course required too. Don't invest to much in a GPU, at least for sole SU modeling purposes, otherwise you will be disappointed.

Keep in mind that deleting components does not remove them from the file. The components will still be held in the model. Any materials you might have tried remain in the In Model Materials collection as do Styles. Go to Window>Model Info>Statistics and hit Purge Unused to get rid of the unused stuff. Although not required, I like to use a plugin made by TIG to purge unused stuff because it gives a report of how many of each sort of thing gets purged.

Here is something that can drastically affect model size. I used CabMaker 3 extension and inserted 14 cabinets into the model. Most of the parts are components. I then saved the file as kitchen_1 size 6,369 K. I then opened the Component Inspector and chose In Model. It took just under 3 minutes to display all the components in the inspector. For these 14 cabinets there are a total of 745 entries in the inspector. I then save the file as kitchen_2 size 18,512 K. There were 745 thumbnails - 1 for each component. I then chose Components instead of In Model and closed the Inspector window. I then opened the first file kitchen_1. In this case I left the Component Inspector closed. I created a simple cube and turned it into a component. After about 3 minutes I regained control. I then saved the file as kitchen_3. It is 18,518 K. I opened the component Inspector, chose in Model and within a second all 746 thumbnails appear. It appears that Sketchup doesn't update the images when creating components within a script. Instead it does so after creating a component using the UI or when displaying the components in model. [image: jbh6_kitchenascomponents.png] I then installed a new version of CabMaker 3 which uses groups instead of components. I opened kitchen_2, selected all cabinets and ran the editor after which I purged. Then I opened the Component Inspector in Model which displayed a single component - the handle. I then saved the file as kitchen_4 size 3,521 K. Sketchup is also more responsive and there are no apparent wait times when creating a component using the UI. I would recommend to anyone working on very large projects to at least consider using groups - especially with nested containers that contain groups or components and no geometry. Of course there are situations where components make sense. Especially with geometry having high poly counts and where you want to make a change and have all copies change. Too bad we don't have a way to tell Sketchup not to create an entry for components in the component inspector on a component basis. [image: h14z_kitchenasgroups.png]
