All four applies for TWR - actually... Although some perhaps will start arguing about "Fast render times", I'd say; it all depends on your scene/model, the materials used, lightning, wether you're using one of the biased or unbiased presets and - of course - how fast your computer is... Others may debate the "Low cost" and we need to acknowledge that although 99,00 USD is a low price to many, the price is high for many people in other parts of the world... My statement is, that compared to other render applications, all of the above points applies for TWR... So... It's impossible to say exactly which one to leave out from the list, since it will depend on the individual person... If I personally had to leave out one, it would be "Fast render times"... To me it's also a little fuzzy... Fast... Compared to what...?? To me it's fast, to others it's Acceptable, while others again may find it slow...

@unknownuser said: You can publish your SketchUp models to eDrawings files that can be packed into a self-executable (.exe). That means there is no Mac version (i.e. not cross-platform). Even worse, their html viewer (as far as I remember) only works in IE so there is not even cross-browser compatibility (although I cannot spot any info about this on their site ATM). There are a multitude of 3D viewers with much-much wider range of browsers and OS platforms. Also, many people are paranoid to launch exe files (and in many corporate environments it is not even allowed for users) so if you really want to publish something, I would go for 3D PDF instead.

I do not use Indigo either but as far as I know (and can tell), skindigo, the exporter plugin is just a "regular" plugin that you have to install just like any other plugin. Then with that plugin you can export your model to the rendering app itself If you choose Kerkythea, you will have to (also) install su2kt.rb which is the exporter plugin. The same for Thea and all standalone studio renderers. Some work inside SU: Podium, Renditioner, Twilight (no Mac version yet) etc. but for all these, you also need to install a plugin that will bring up the UI for you. And indeed, do not stop posting. This is a forum that is aimed to help people and experienced "pro's", if they indeed express their being annoyed by newbie questions are regularly scolded. Why do you think we even have a Newbie Forum here - on top of all other forums?

In that example, thomthom, there are definitely lights inside, right? What about giving them a color? Tungsten 100W have a color temperature around 3200K which is about RGB 255,241,224. Because of the reflection on the roof overhang, it looks to me like they are actually changing the color of the lights. I'm all for some post-pro, but the more I can do in the rendering itself the better, IMO. That way I can reproduce the effect as I change the design.

WOW that was a quick reply! Thanks very much. That does work to an extent however when i explode the image it then disappears or doesn't completely lie flat on the surface it was previously on. It kind of 'flickers' as i navigate and move the camera!? Is there anyway to get around that? Sorry for all the questions but i also tried the Indigo Renderer, also very impressed but my images i import do not appear in the renders? I know i really need to look into it more but do i have to create special 'materials' for these images to render? Thanks for your help!

You need to Scale everything up x10 and afterwards down x0.1, Sketchup and OpenGL can't cope with the small faces that result in such a small object intersection and so nothing gets made... [image: De7J_Capture.PNG]

You can purchase a SketchUp exporter that takes your file and saves it to a Vue file. THen Vue opens it and you can use it in Vue. You can add trees and plants in Vue, or whatever you want to do in Vue. Then render. If you don't want to pay for the plugin, you can also export from SU as a .obj file, then open that in Vue and it comes in fairly well much of the time. Chris

@jonny round boy said: [cut] I'm using the PLE version of ARmedia, and SketchUp7 for Windows. The included target is 80mm square, but when I load a model & import the target into SketchUp the virtual target is 2032mm, ie 80 inches (unit preferences in SketchUp are set to mm). This means that any model I want to view at actual size, I have to scale up by a factor of 25.4 (25.4mm = 1 inch). I don't know if this is an issue with just me, or if it's the same for everyone. Is there a way for the virtual target to be reduced in size? I tried scaling it in SketchUp but it just defaulted to the bigger size. If you check the 'Fit Scene' box in the AR-media Configuration Utility, during the AR visualization all your scene will be automatically scaled to be contained within the virtual marker's boundaries. To access the Configuration utility, you can click on the second button from the bottom of the toolbar or click the 'Configure...' button in the menu/main window. Hope this can help you resolve this issue.

Great news, but I could kick myself!!!! I downloaded the beta a few weeks ago but have been so busy with work I did not get chance to try it out. After thinking about it earlier today I thought, just buy it while it is at the lower price. On going to the site earlier I realised it had gone up in price by around €100. I forgot it was 1st March it went up. I need to save up some more money, or stick with Twilight

I was actually trying to find their development roadmap when I stumbled on this. It looks like cool software, and I was interested if they had exporters in the plan. This kind of puts the breaks on for me. But I still have the "Fur" plugin.

What do you want from a renderer? Photoreal quality, ease of use, fast rendering, cheap/free? So, the answer to "which is the best renderer" is: it depends on what you need. From the sound of it you seem to be new to rendering so I would suggest a renderer that is easy to use and cheap to get you going. If you want it to be free I suggest Kerkythea. Cheap and easy to use, my suggestion is Twilight (it's basically Kerkythea but directly from within SketchUp). Photoreal (advanced), then it's Thea or Vray. If you go for one of the more advanced you should be prepared to put quite some time into understanding how to use it fully. There are lots of more renderers and I'm sure others will fill those in.

Update: I dumped the gigantic box, as the dongle is the only thing that matters. June 12th update: It looks like I'll have to dump the dongle, too.

My guess is that we will never be able to render reality.. unless you want to spend few years of your life on one project. Why? Not because of compuing power needed to do all the calculations.. (well.. actually also because of that) it's because of the fact that if you want to render reality, you have to set up reality. And the other thing.. all of the functions you have mentioned are kinda for geeking out. Fluorescent light? Cooll.. but can't you really make this effect in your current renderer or in post processing? Infra red... isn't this effect easily achievable with normal render and depth render connected in post processing? Gravitational lenses.. cool idea.. not easily achievable with other ways.. but how often you photograph distant solar systems? I guess it's mostly for placing singularities in Your kitchen.. i must say that i'd play around with that too.. but it is no longer making photos real-like. Light interference.. this one, as you wrote would be for geeking out only, but i guess that limitation isn't really much like computing power but resolution.. for this you can't use graphical textures (maybe vector ones). I can see use of it and i think it already should be done by someone (like a geek home project) but not in such commercial products like any renderer i know. And most important.. the things you've mentioned are not really dragging the renders to photo realism. They are mostly usefull when you want to render certain phenomenon. For photo queality there have to still be perfected and added things like light scattering, air humidity, dust particles and many others.. but still making renders look like photograph is mainly based on attempting to implement in renders the same flaws that camera lenses have, like lens flare. All this is yet pretending the reality and not rendering the reality. What i think would help in this is increasing amount of faulty details. Because when you look at world.. you can never see prefect surfaces, straight lines, total transparency, perfectly waxed car or evenly covered with rust. In renders you can. Lens flares, light scatter and all post effects are simply attempt to cover the fact that it is perfect world behind them.. rendered world. What i am saying that i would very much like to see in rendering programs something like Chaos Generator. It would slightly modify surface properties in certain zones.. mostly unexpectedly for creator but this would make his own work a bit more real even for himself. So.. surface properties, air density (along with surface and edge curving), random surface reflections or dullness, scratches, mentioned before dust particles and so on.. The fact is that you actually can make it all by hand.. but no matter what you render, you just can't inject enough flaws to make it really work like in reality because the "visible chaos" factor per inch square of final render is constant no matter the scale you are operating in. Zooming in is not making the chaos bigger.. it only shows different parts of it. That's why it should be automated and random (for user).
