Dave: Thank you for the detailed explanation and examples. That is very helpful. Broomstick: Thank you for sharing the file. I'm not using Vray, but I am sure I can modify the file if necessary to work for my purposes.

It's difficult to provide a single solution without knowing what the format of the data is. Here's some suggestions. if you have XYZ data (or polar co-ordinate data that can be converted) then Didier Bur's excellent pointscloud ruby script (Didier's site is http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/) will import spreadsheet data and provide some level of triangulation/skinning. I use it mostly for terrain/ DEM data for which it works well. If you have the contour data for the illustrated diagrams in digital form, then TIG's suggestions are the way to go. You may need to tweak the interpolations. If all you have is the graphs, you could import these as images, trace each and then scale as required and follow TiG's suggestion. Another program that is good at accurately digitising images of graphs is Engauge (http://digitizer.sourceforge.net/). The interface is not slick, but its very capable. Hope that helps. If not, SU may not be the right tool - you may want to look at dedicated data visualisation programs. I haven't used these much, but GGOBI (http://www.ggobi.org/) integrates with the R data/statistical environment (http://cran.r-project.org/), or OpenDX seems well regarded (http://www.opendx.org/). I know nothing about Axiis (http://www.axiis.org/) but it might be another option.

Not a solution but a work around. For importing images into the skp file you can drag/drop them

Two Quick and dirty solutions: #1(vista) download d3d8.dll,d3d9.dll for Stability, helps sketchup graphs speed. http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files_new.php/dllfiles/D/d3d8.dll/5.03.2600.2180/download.html #2 Run more than one sketchup: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=40254 a) By copying sketckup 8 to another location, you can load more plugins. b) Also a empty plug-in folder is a great viewer c) For zone testing for new downloaded plug-ins Now Enjoy, Give thanks to sketckup team.

Great! As you can see from the resultant images making a compliant staircase with tapered treads etc is far from easy... As you say, you can now take the plan image, import it as an Image and Scale it [TapeMeasure tool] to the correct size; then use it as a basis for making the stairs...[image: p1SS_Capture.PNG]

Welcome! If you look for the DC sub-forum I think there are several discussions in there about this. http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewforum.php?f=289 E.G. http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=31393&p=281641&hilit=door#p281641 Also links to some example DCs in the 3d-warehouse that do this type of on-click animation too...

IF you export a 2D dwg it is all on one layer, as lines, with no arcs/circles etc. IF you export a 3d dwg it retains its layers and has true arcs/circles etc. Just experiment - there aren't THAT many possible permutations

I typically blur, and lighten the background image before creating the watermark or render.

SketchUp as a BIM tool and CAD replacement. SketchUp has matured hugely in the past few years to become a fast-developing new standard, gaining major advantages in comparison to 2D CAD: Instant Section Cut Fill has been built in to create finished plan section and elevation drawings. 2D drawing capability in LayOut. This is arguably an easier and cheaper solution for 2D CAD purposes alone, without talking about 3D modelling. SketchUp's BIM credentials are also outlined in the BIM Section at https://viewsion.ie/#bim. I've written up with Revit, exploring solutions and commercial advantages rather than just BIM for BIM's sake. The new book "https://sketchucation.com/shop/books/intermediate/227-sketchup-for-construction-documentation-2018" is a short practical course which explores the best way to professionally produce SketchUp models then convert them to live-updated Construction Documents.
