@chippwalters said: @caul said: It's actually quite straight forward to construct a "canonical" entasis in Sketchup for any type of column - smooth or fluted. <snip> I've done two different tutorials on Flowify and even I had a hard time following this, but it is an ingenious use of the tool! I've added a highly exaggerated example file to show the basic principle. [image: moia_entasisII.png] entasis(skp8).zip

Just be patient. That's most important, this sort of work takes time. Stick to quads. This is more about understanding topology and having a good plan when you model, than it is about the plugins.

@goranmax said: do you know a plugin that generates line shapes to bezier curves?....they work better or to generate smoother curves? They do work better. I used the Bezier tool from Fredo's Bezier Spline which is available here in the Sketchucation Extension Store.

@jerrymich said: What causes the faces to be reversed? A common cause when it's things like walls is that the user starts with by drawing the perimeter which creates a face with the back face up. Then they draw lines for the interior walls before extruding them up with P/P. The walls will be inside out and if you orbit to look at the bottom, there's no faces at the bottoms of the walls. Although this might be unexpected, SketchUp is doing the right thing. It's the same as pushing a hole into a face. If you delete the face representing the floor and leave only the face at the bottom of the wall, you'll get the correct extrusion. Of course you could also reverse the faces at some point. It's a good idea to stay on top of face orientation and fix incorrect orientation as it happens. Much less work and less likely to create problems down the road. Keep in mind the back face color on top of a face drawn on the ground plane is normal since it is expected you'll make it a 3D shape.

I ended up going with strucalc, price wasn't bad, plenty of youtube videos, and pretty straight forward learning curve.

There are a number of lined textures available. I think the best way is to use some other vector drawing program and export as sharp a picture that you can with png or jpg format. You want a flat view of the texture. If you use SU you have to orient the view to the face and use parallel projection to get a straight-on view, then export at a graphic. Adjust the light and dark sliders in the shadow dialog to get the tone you want for the background (the faces). Using Sketchup doesn't seem the best way to get a texture pattern, in my opinion.

Congrats on the new job. Checkout the special interests/woodworking part of the forum. Lots of good stuff. And have a look at DaveR's posts, he is the woodworking guru around here. For example: https://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=183%26amp;t=64609

Good try at it Box. Fell back to twisting with FredoScale cause my attempts twisting with Vertex Tools weren't working so well. Need to do a little more practice with Vertex Tools since it shouldn't mess up the mesh in the process.....

Ok thanks. I have updated everything and I still get the bugsplat every time I try and use(still on 2017). Perhaps it is related to another plugin I have installed. I will try to disable them all and see if it makes any diiference

I think if you are trying to duplicate what the Leica laser is doing, you would need to "replicate" what the laser does automatically. The laser must be "fixed" in place and "shoots" let's say target #1on a wall, then pivot the laser tool (vert/horiz/etc) and shoot target #2 on same wall. The laser takes both lengths recorded, and references the angle of pivot to report the "height" (if vert/assuming plumb wall) You could easily do this in sketchup using a fixed point/protractor/tape measure tool, but the distance from the wall and the elevation of the laser tool must be known. (Assuming you are trying to replicate laser info) You likely know all of the above and more, so I think to help answer your question more specifically, can you provide a simple example of what you are attempting? (Is this for something like photo match?) Best regards, Charlie

I can see partial automation but, for total automation, you might look at ValliArchitects Instant Roof.

@sdmitch said: @justsumguy said: Thanx sdmitch, can you tell me a little of how you did that? I used a couple of Ruby snippets. The first one gave the the Normal of the 'back' face. The second one used that normal and a point on the 'front' face to define a plane. Then each vertex of the 'front' face was transformed so it was on that plane. This made the two faces parallel. and as I look into that, I can see its way past my level for now Thank you much!! P.S. my part is printing now and looking good
