BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

The higher the frame rate the smoother the animation, and the longer the render. waiting for the day instant render happens *

I also agree for a code rewritten/optimization for sketchup first but honestly i don't really think that will happen any time soon because SU7 have just been released. So if any new tool will be released before a SU optimization, it should at least come inside the program and not by a ruby extension. Take the example of the new scale tool plugin from Fredo6. It's a great plugin that completly turns the sketchup scale tool absolete (for the ones that don't use DCs) but because it's a ruby it's much slower on larger geometries than the basic scale tool that it's part of the program and operates much faster. So as i said in SU8 whishlist thread before we get anything new we need optimization first.

Yeah, by what you wrote, you should adjust your workflow a bit but I think it could be of much help and use.

Absolutely, and thats why wI would love to be able to do all - Cad drawings to model to rendering in SketchUp. I often wonder why there seems to be some kind of protected turf when it comes to this.

Yeah see?, it totally works differently. I generally prefer the outcome of the FOV tool in the camera menu because it tends to act how I want it to. Its easier to set up smooth scene transitions that way Chris

I have to say, Google is so damn decent with their licensing - buying one license and being able to use them on many different machines (only one at a time) and all the other machines automatically switch back to the free version, when the license is in use. the same with network licenses for an office (so you only have to buy a few pro licenses, because for most modelling it is not necessary). that is absolutely fantastic. then free educators licenses and really cheap ones for students... that is absolutely fantastic!

I dont really know a lot about BIM modelling, but from the sounds of it you could do what you want with dynamic components. Specifically, using the generate report function would probably be quite useful.

The only problem with a SketchUcruise is that Coen is prone to sea sickness if I remember correctly maybe there are others. But the Med in Spring / Autumn is quite calm and on a big ship this is not a major problem. I DO think something could be organised along these lines and will work quietly way on it in the background. The main thing is that there is a willingness by a good number of Members to have a Conference. Mike

Google doen't need to "approve" anyone to teach although there is an "Authorised Training Program" in which if one is included, can wear the badge of it and it says it is authorised by Google (so you teach in the name of Google). Generally local resellers run such programs but well... the quality may depend on the knowledge of the reseller / its employee. Certainly there are exceptions and also, to become an authorised trainer, you need to take some exam or what. However what about an educational institution? Would they then not be allowed to teach SU (in fact, Google encourages schools to teach SU).

FYI, the suits were impressed--enough to purchase the Pro if we needed it. Funny though, I have now tested this by comparison and I was using the cut-down free version all the time (well, except for the first 8 trial days). I never noticed anything go away after the first 8 days so I assumed I was just living with Pro on borrowed time--that's a newbie for you! Anyway I'm concluding at this stage of our use that we can get along fine with the freebie version and wait to pick up Pro at a later date. Thank you all again for the help you gave me getting through this. We are taking the exported animation to a trade show next week, where I suspect it may draw some attention.

Why not make a SU collaborative model that tells a story based on this kind of snobbery? It would be a cool 3D "exquisite corpse" told in several scenes.

@unknownuser said: Not unless you haven't saved the original file. It would be under 'My Documents' if the autosave function saves it before you do... Ah yes. Didn't think of unsaved models. The location of that can be set under Preferences->Files->Models.
