@jql said: I just said that with my SSD AND without thumbnails, I don't get 2 secs saves. I don't even notice saving anymore. @unknownuser said: I understand that but if you need your render to look nice you need to import some complex models ( flowers, vase, figurines etc.. ) and these really hit sketchup hard. You should use proxies for that sort of stuff. @unknownuser said: Check the remaining time for just merging faces : Merging faces is not saving a model, it's a complex face operation like explode or import. My problem is not the rendering, I can render relatively quickly. But the problem with Sketchup itself. I have been trying to load a 118 MB skp file into sketchup but it took over 6 hours. What's funny is that 3DS Max could load it in 2 mins. We can't deny that Sketchup is slow, really slow and I refuse to leave it for basic modeling as it has a lot of potential to compete with the big 5 but then we need a major update.. maybe a complete re-written Sketchup. I've used RAM disks a long time ago when HD's were really slow. They are great but the main caveat is saving contents to the HD for posterity. It used to be a manual effort when it was convenient, but I sometimes forgot, or there was a power glitch that rebooted the system. But perhaps today there are "autosaves" that will copy the files to HD in background. I'm not current in that because I don't use RAM drives; not enough memory and my SSD is fast enough.

Thanks for the "use a 2d program" tips. Helpful. Parallel projection and standard views don't seem to help. Here's an example. I'm laying out a picnic setting. Ground area done. Tree in the middle done. Table built. Trying to move the table towards the tree. Top view. I can select and move the table, but Sketchup assumes I wish to raise it off the ground and connect it to a branch of the tree. I have NO wish to move it towards me (away from the ground) or away from me (towards the centre of the earth), I just want to move it north, south, east or west, so I can position it, rotate the model, look at it from different angles, move it again etc. I could hide the tree, but then I can't see the tree. This would be SO EASY if Sketchup could limit itself to working in the only two dimensions I can work in!

@anthonysarno321 said: I can't find a plugin that does this, and it would save me loads of time. Often I am importing dwg files into sketchup 2015, and it comes in with all the layers, which is great. However, I often do not want all the layers shown. What would be easiest is if there was a plugin/ruby to send each individual layer to a scene, with only that layer. The scene would for obvious reasons be named by the layer. Then when I work within Layout, I can use/select any individual layer from the dwg file. Anyone know if this already exists, or a work around? Thanks in advance! If possible, please post a sample model,ver<=2014.

This is exactly what I´ve been searching for a long time! Could work similar to "layers panel". Or does anyone know if such a plugin does exist?

Hi All, Well, I bought SketchUp Mobile Viewer for Android. It works well. Some options are still missing, but layers are correctly displayed, and it's easy to navigate. Local files can be viewed, no connection needed. Some wishes : Dynamic components aren't recognized. Animations (auto rotation etc...) would be usefull. MALAISE

@jiminy-billy-bob said: Oh yeah, don't worry about subscription! It'll be a one-time purchase granting you a license valid forever. All the 1.x updates will be free. Then one day if there is a v2, it might be a paid upgrade (or maybe not, we'll see) Great! Subscriptions are the devils work that always seem to go wrong!

@oganocali said: Thanks to TIG and JQL. From the ruby console I changed the value of Sketchup.break_edges and performed a few run time tests on big meshes. I could not oberve any time difference between true and false values of Sketchup.break_edges variable. Apparently there is a much more costly operation that is performed at the end user move completion. I wish the testers at trimble had a few large mesh cases to push the developers for a performance improvement... That performance improvement has been in developer's mind for ages. They've improved it over the years, the question though is that it seems the real performance issue is rooted deep within sketchup itself, and improving it without breaking sketchup is a real challenge... But this is what I've been reading here and there. I also think testers should push it harder!

@axton213 said: decent 3D modelling That be fightin' talk In all seriousness though, yeah using sketchup for game-ready modeling is not an efficient use of available tools, to say the least. This thread kinda devolved into what was more fun to use, though, which is ridiculously subjective and not even worth talking about in a forum full of sketchup users.

Well, of course they are accessed from the Context menu and thus the commands change depending upon the context.

Totally, agree, mate. I tend to set depth cue to no more that 3 and when taken into LO change to Hybrid and wind back the Line Weight to about 0.2 [Minimum it will go to is 0.1]. Oh, and a little bit of Fog if I fell the need but the Fog sliders can be tedious to manipulate.

Really minor but... the measurements box could use a caret to mark where you're typing. As is, I have to go by feel + trial and error if I want to change something I'm inputting.

There are many reasons to keep more than one version of an application. I agree, +1 for changing the icon. Seems like a rookie oversight for a software development company. Having to make your own icon or hide a shortcut is just silly.

So... Being able to use line thickness. Use Layout - or Plugins like 2dTools-LineStyle Being able to use line types. Use Layout - or Plugins like 2dTools-LineStyle Being able to use line colors. Use Layout - or Plugins like 2dTools-LineStyle - or Style Color-by-Material Being able to join lines. Use Plugins that 'Weld' [e.g. TIG-Weld] or 'Merge' unneeded vertices [Fredo's toolset] Being able to stretch lines. Use the native Move on a vertex, Entity Info to change Length etc Being able to dimension angles. Layout - or there are Plugins available...

It will maybe run and display as a 2d window (just like the video player in the hololens demo), just like you could bring SketchUp on a smart watch (using an x86 emulator with Windows XP) or on a Google Glass (using an emulator or remote desktop) with gesture/touch input translated to single point 2d mouse events. It does not make SketchUp fit to new screen sizes or support new kinds of interactions. It would be interesting to see if (and in what areas) SketchUp takes the chance to innovate again and take up such technologies early (of course it's safer to let the big guys innovate, and follow the latest possible when mainstream has adopted 64bit, multitouch, hidpi, web-technologies). Also I wouldn't expect it to be the hololens, you know they have been working with Project Tango, and Trimble can make things possible…
